Nuclear's Role in America's Energy and Climate Challenge
Yesterday, Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee held a hearing on the Nuclear Energy Research Initiative Improvement Act of 2009. This bipartisan bill, which I introduced in October, authorizes the U.S. Department of Energy to conduct research into modular and small-scale reactors, enhanced proliferation controls, and cost-efficient manufacturing.

Udall, Bennet Announce NREL to Lead Cutting-Edge Biofuels Research and Development Effort
Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senators Mark Udall and Michael Bennet announced that a consortium led by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden has been selected to receive up to $33.8 million through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. NREL will help research and develop a sustainable, cost-effective way to produce fuel from plant materials that can be used in existing pipelines and refineries - work that is crucial to development of a clean energy economy.

A New Strategy in Afghanistan

The hearing was the first public opportunity for lawmakers to ask detailed questions of the Administration following President Obamas announcement that he will add 30,000 new troops in Afghanistan in preparation for a transition to Afghan authority and military withdrawal from the country beginning in July 2011.
