The EU and Canada: Common challenges and political responses?

The European Studies Program at the University of Victoria is organizing a transatlantic conference for doctoral students and young scholars (up to three years after their PhD) at the European University Institute in Florence to stimulate the exchange between future leaders in the field of European Studies.

This conference is part of the Canadian Project YRN2007.com that stimulates research-based collaborations between Canadian and European young scholars.

The themes for this conference and for special issues in the Review of European and Russia Affairs (www.europeanandrussianaffairs.com) are:

  1. New Foreign Policy Challenges and Canada-EU relations
  2. Canadian and European Approaches to International Economic Relations
  3. Social Policies and Labour Markets in Canada and Europe
  4. Immigration, Citizenship, and Multiculturalism
  5. Governance in the European Union
  6. Enlargement, Neighbourhood policies, and Nationalism.

Interested young scholars are kindly requested to submit a proposal of the paper (max 7 pages) by January 7th, 2007 to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . In addition, submissions should include a short bio with affiliation, as well as detailed contact information. Contributions are welcome in either French or English.

Travel and subsistence costs for participation at this conference can be partly covered by this grant (up to 50%). All papers and essays will be judged on the basis of scholarship, quality of research and relevance to the research themes. A committee of senior and junior scholars will select the best papers and will invite those selected: A) to participate in the transatlantic conference at the EUI and B) to publish the best papers in the Review of European and Russian Affairs (RERA).. Furthermore it is planned to form online research clusters based on the above listed themes that will give participants an opportunity to exchange and discuss their papers with scholars who have similar research interests.

The European Commission has awarded a grant to support European Union related activities for Young Researchers in Canada. This conference is one of these activities that have been developed under the leadership of the European Studies Program at the University of Victoria and its Director Dr. Oliver Schmidtke. The YRN and the planned conference are also supported by the following universities: University of British Columbia, Institute for Russian and European Studies and the Carleton University in Ottawa, Haute Ecole Commerciale in Montreal and in addition the Young Researchers Network in Canada (ECSA-C YRN).
