Letterbox

Letterbox is a plugin for Apple's Mail.app that takes advantage of your widescreen monitor. It rearranges the interface into three vertical columns.

Letterbox beta 5 for Snow Leopard

This beta updates Letterbox for the impending arrival of 10.6.2, and adds an extremely simplistic two-line view. I’d like to make it more customizable, and support including dates within the column, but not at the expense of simplicity, stability, and speed. So we’ll see how it goes.

Still a manual install to keep out the unadventurous. Click through for the link and instructions.

Letterbox beta 4 for Snow Leopard

This is an updated beta that should un-mangle things after the somewhat wonky beta 3.

This version “probably works” under 64-bit Mail, but until I get a 64-bit machine myself, I can’t really stand by that claim. It also “hopefully” fixes crashes and hangs, but with all the changes for 64-bit, it could very well have introduced some new ones :-)

Letterbox beta 3 for Snow Leopard

UPDATE: Latest beta is Beta 4 for Snow Leopard.

This is still a 32-bit beta. Thanks to help from the always polite and kind Scott Morrison, I’m much closer to 64-bit glory. Apple changed pretty much everything about how plugins work in the 64-bit dynamic loader, so this version contains most of the changes that will be needed.

Your generous testing time, comments, feedback, and donations have been invaluable. Tomorrow or Tuesday I think I’m going to buy a 64-bit laptop, which will make the process of getting the 64-bit version working much faster. (Rather than the “Change some stuff, email it to someone kind enough to offer to run it, wait until they get a chance to test it, see what didn’t work” cycle.) Thanks again for all the support, of all kinds.

Letterbox BETA for 32-bit Snow Leopard

UPDATE: Latest beta is Beta 4 for Snow Leopard.

Hi folks,

Thanks for your patience (and for your impatient nudges which keep me moving along :P). I’m still at work at a 64-bit Letterbox for Snow Leopard. I’ve made significant progress, but we’re not out of the woods yet.

For you anxious early adopters, I’m posting below a PREVIEW, BETA, EXPERTS-ONLY, NOT YET FULLY FUNCTIONAL version of Letterbox which can be used with Mail in 32-bit mode.

Letterbox for Snow Leopard — Soon

UPDATE: Latest beta is Beta 4 for Snow Leopard.

Good folk,

Keep keeping those pants on. I’m honored by the deluge of requests for Letterbox on Snow Leopard. I’m sorry I haven’t been able to reply to each of you individually.

I now have Letterbox running on Snow Leopard in 32-bit mode, and expect to have a solution for 64-bit Mail soon. I’ll unfortunately be out of town and offline over the holiday weekend here in the US, but should be able to post an update by Tuesday, Sep 8.

After that, there are a few more items in the backlog I’d like to tackle — resolving an incompatibility with other plugins using Sparkle first, and then ye olde two-line display.

cheers, ~aaron

10.5.3 might fix the missized-columns-after-search annoyance in Letterbox

In the release notes for 10.5.3, I see an entry for “Mail message list no longer shrinks after search.” This might resolve an annoying issue some people have when using Letterbox, that the message list columns get their sizes scrambled after executing a search.

Let me know if 10.5.3 takes care of this for you, or whether the behavior persists!

Cracking 100,000 users

Geez, I had no idea. Once I get my research life under control (i.e. not in shambles), I guess I should go ahead and put (a) a combo-column, and (b) a donation button in Letterbox.

I hadn’t bothered to look at the Sparkle update logs in a while. I was surprised to see this:

[aaron@macbookpro] $ cat access_log-2008-03* | perl -ne ‘if (m/UUID=([A-Z0-9-]+)&/) { print “$1\n”; }’ | sort -u | wc -l 108833

i.e., there are 108,000 unique users of Letterbox out there! Hi, all! You are not forgotten! cheers, aaron

I guess the subject column is too short sometimes

So I opened up Mail.app to this very spammy-looking message today:

Before I tossed it streetside with the rest of the trash, though, I happened to switch to preview-at-the-bottom mode. Ah, I see!

Lesson: Alright, you guys win — I’ll work on a two-line column for Letterbox. (Letterbox work is a Sundays-only deal at this point, but I’ll try to make progress nonetheless).

~aaron

P.S. Yes, comments are broken. I dunno, will look at it when I have time.
