From the Movies

A holocam is a recording device that captures holographic imagery for broadcast and/or archive purposes. They are often used in security applications. Also called a holorecorder, these devices come in all manner of shapes and configurations.

Numerous observation holocams lined Death Star detention block AA-23. Intruders Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Chewbacca made a point of destroying as many holocams as they could before rescuing Princess Leia Organa.

Holocams are often fitted with small repulsorlifts and limited droid intelligence to serve as roving cameras for covering large events. The incredibly fast Boonta Eve Podrace was recorded by fast-moving holocams that tracked the action, and transmitted their imagery to small hand-held viewscreens. During sessions of the Galactic Senate, hovering holocams provide close-up views of speakers to many different members.

From the Expanded Universe

Merr-Sonn manufactures a number of holocam models for the Imperial military, specifically for security purposes. The military issue 57C unit is a more advanced model, equipped with special multiphase visual adjustment features, motion sensors, audio pickups, and signal transmitters.

Behind the Scenes

Though the Podrace holocams are not visible in the film, their footage is seen in Shmi's handheld viewscreen throughout the race.
