Small Grants to Public Libraries Give Local Residents the Skinny on Skin Health
Thirteen public libraries have received small grants through the AAAS Skin Deep Project aimed at funding public awareness events related to skin health. Public libraries are excellent partners, says Suzanne Thurston, senior program associate in AAAS Education and Human Resources. They often have established relationships with not only their community, but also with local experts and specialists who can help develop a public outreach event. To learn more, please go here.

Honolulu, Hawaii USA
Essay Contest on "Translational Medicine" for Japanese Librarians
Essays may be submitted between Wednesday, April 1 and Tuesday, April 21, 2009
Winner announced Monday, April 27, 2009
The American Association for the Advancement of Science, AAAS, and the publisher of Science, Science Signaling, Science Classic, and soon-to-be released Science Translational Medicine announces an essay contest for librarians in Japan. The prize includes roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodations for five nights and six days at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Hotel, $50 per diem for six days, transportation between hotel and Honolulu Airport, and Package A – Super Inclusive registration to attend the American Medical Library Association’s annual conference and exhibition, in Honolulu, Hawaii from May 15 – May 20, 2009. Total prize valued at $3,615.
The prize winner of the essay contest will be a guest of honor at the AAAS/Science "Hawaii-style" event at the world-renowned Halekulani Hotel on Waikiki beach to be held on Monday, May 18, 2009.
The contest involves writing a 500-word essay in English, or 1,500 characters in Japanese, about translational medicine, which is a relatively new scientific field where human health is promoted by facilitating communication among those dedicated to basic and clinical research and its application. The essay would need to focus on the particular librarian’s institution, nonprofit (academic, research, government, hospital) or corporate institute and how the institution is approaching the field of translational medicine in teaching, research, and library support. The essay should discuss how the institution’s library is collection building for online and print materials in this field. The discussion could also speak about the challenges and opportunities to build a research collection to support the field of translational medicine.
Essays should be submitted no later than Tuesday, April 21, 2009, to:
sciencemedicine{at}aaas.org
Winner of the contest will be announced on Monday, April 27, 2009.

CrossRef CrossCheck Program
December 2008, Washington DC: AAAS announces their participation in the CrossRef CrossCheck program to index Science and its online companion sites.
What is CrossRef CrossCheck?
CrossCheck is an initiative started by CrossRef to help its members actively engage in efforts to prevent scholarly and professional plagiarism. Although there are several plagiarism detection tools already available, they are not well-suited to filtering academic content simply because they haven't had access to the relevant full-text literature to screen against. CrossCheck changes this by creating and continuously growing a database of current and archival scholarly literature.
This database is one of two parts that make up the CrossCheck service. The second part is a tool to compare authored work against the content in the database and highlight matching or similar text for further editorial review.

AAAS Foreign Campus Policy
As a result of The New York Times February 10, 2008, article entitled "U.S. Universities Rush to Set Up Outposts Abroad," AAAS wanted to take the opportunity to reinforce the association's policy on foreign campuses. Many of these campuses operate independently from a parent institution and therefore may be required to have its own sitewide subscription. The current Site License Agreement states, "If the Licensee has locations in more than one country, a separate site license may be required for each country location."
For further information regarding our Foreign Campus Policy, please contact the AAAS Site Licensing Department at info{at}scienceonline.org or by calling toll free at 866-265-4152. For international customers, please call +1-202-326-6730.
