Iowa's Past - Named for a native tribe, the area which became Iowa was part of the Louisiana Purchase, and closed to non-native settlement prior to the Black Hawk War, which ended in 1832.  The Sauk and Fox tribal land cessions followed.   Non-native settlement began with the Black Hawk Purchase, and Iowa became part of Michigan Territory until 1836, when Michigan achieved statehood.  From 1836, until 1838, Iowa was part of the Wisconsin Territory.  Finally, two years later, Iowa Territory was carved out of the area of Wisconsin Territory west of the Mississippi River.
