Windows 7: More than 90 Million Copies Sold!

Today during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference, our Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein announced that Windows 7 has sold 90 million licenses to-date! That's a lot of Windows 7.  We're humbled and excited that people are responding so positively to Windows 7 - our customers have made it the fastest selling operating system in history.

Peter also had an opportunity to show off some of the great hardware innovation coming from our partners in the PC business. He brought three great PCs on stage to show off: the Sony VAIO X which is so sleek and portable it could fit inside a MacBook Air, the Dell Adamo XPS which is the thinnest PC in the world, and the HP Envy 13 which combines breakthrough industrial design with tons of power. I had a hand in helping to get these PCs to Peter for the conference and it was fun to hear him talk about them on stage.

All in all, some great momentum for Windows 7 and some great PCs!

    Well done Microsoft!

You really deserved it, because your last OS is convincing without making a lot of effort of persuading. People when see and try Window 7, they love it, and that would be the normal result for productive employees.

I'm really proud of being a loyal customer to Microsoft.

Windows 7 SUCKS!!!!  BASIC functionality has been taken away and EVERYTHING is more difficult.  Why do you make things WORSE?????

Well I'd be glad if Service Pack 1 actually fixed some of the usability, UI and feature removal issues instead of being just a regular service pack incorporating hotfixes.

@Arizona, sorry you are unhappy. What "basic functionality" are you referring to that has been taken away?

@7flavor, what features specificallywere removed you're finding that you're missing?

There are several but I find the lack of ability to disable auto sort in List and details views, and auto arrange in icon views immensely frustrating. I would also like the overlay icon back for shared folders. And having the sort and filtering bar in Windows Explorer back for all views like Vista so we don't have to right-click, click, click, right-click, click, click. And ability to override autologon by pressing the SHIFT key before logon like XP/Server 2003. And can we have the Column provider shell extension back? It was very useful for certain dynamic file properties like size, extension which the Property System in Vista doesn't/can't index.

    Greedy Micro$$oft $trikes again.

Just when the holidays roll around and people would like to buy items for their PC's Micro$$oft pulls the Windows 7 Family Pack.

I have 3 PC's in my house that I was going to upgrade from XP to Window$ 7 for the New Year.

At $149.00 I can make that worthwhile.

At $357.00 ($119 ea PC) I cannot afford it.

Looks like 2010 is the year we stay with Window$ XP.

    Thanks again Micro$oft!

how about a voice of reason?  I really like Win 7. It's the best desktop OS available now.  I should mention I am the desktop architect for a Fortune 500 company and am currently planning my deployment.   I've been using Win 7 on various machines since the beta period.  Yes, I love Win 7 but it is not perfect.

As the posters stated above, some things are harder (more clicks) than with Vista.  For example:

    1.  The task bar is a GREAT piece of programming but as cool as it is, it is much less efficient than the Vista style bar. To get to a specific window from a group (when multiple emails are open or multiple IE tabs) it actually takes 3-4x as long.

    2.  A side effect of the task  bar is the removal of quick launch. Yes, you can argue that the whole task bar is a quick launch, but that's a weak argument. The quick launch icons occupied very little space. Not true for the behemoths on the win 7 bar. Quick launch was great for people not really comfortable with a PC. I could load up the show desktop icon, the snipping tool, etc…  These are utility icons that don’t really need massive Win 7 icons.

    3. Another side effect is the moving of the show desktop icon.  The new location is in the most inconvenient spot possible on the screen. Really, the bottom right beside the clock?  How is that intuitive?

    4. What is the purpose of aero peek?  It's cool, yes, but what is the purpose?  Why do I need to hover over that inconvenient place on my screen to see my desktop? It must be clicked on to be actually useful.

Any word on the share of 64-bit installations?

Any word on the return of the Family Pack?

I'm very proud to be a Windows 7 User and Administrator. This is a great accomplishment for Microsoft, well done.

@Arizona , Every innovation requires change. If everything always stayed the same as its previous version, how would progress be possible?

@RevRedDog , Software costs time and money to produce. $149.00 seems like a bargain when you consider what it cost you in development time, training, and money to make your own OS.
