AFSC Bronze Medal and Distinguished Career Award Winners
Congratulations to Bronze Medal recipients James Ianelli for developing the first model to estimate impacts of salmon bycatch in the Alaska pollock fishery on reductions in spawning salmon in terms of adult equivalence; Michael Cameron and Joshua London for successfully planning and implementing the first autonomous launch and retrieval of an Unmanned Aircraft System onboard a NOAA research vessel; and Distinguised Career recipient Alex Wertheimer for outstanding pioneering research on the role of marine ecosystems in the development and preservation of wild and hatchery salmon stocks in Alaska. |

A total of 135 adult male red king crab were tagged with electronic archival tags and released in the eastern Bering Sea for the purpose of tracking their seasonal migrations. The archival tags were programmed to collect measurements of depth at 1-minute intervals and temperature at 30-minute intervals. Tag returns are expected when the commercial crab fishery begins again in fall/winter of 2010. More> |
The Habitat and Ecological Processes Research Team recommeneded 10 EFH projects for funding for 2010. Approximately $500,000 is spent on about ten EFH research projects each year. More> |
The preparation of the North Pacific groundfish stock assessment and fishery evaluation reports this year covered more than 54 sections and totaled more than 3,000 thousand pages. These reports contain analyses summarizing the information about the individual stocks and species groups, and include allowable biological catch and overfishing level recommendations for future years. This summer the AFSC provides exciting internship opportunities for students: onboard a survey cruise in Alaska; or studying sea lions at San Miguel Island, California; or at our Seattle science facility doing lab work, image processing or outreach projects. More> |
