Sky park for Manchester Central

By Samrana Hussain

A new public park in the sky, tram interchange and three glass towers sit at the heart of plans to regenerate the area at the back of the Manchester Central exhibitions and conference centre.

A glass bridge will link Deansgate station and there will be improved pedestrian access from the tram stop into the city centre.

The masterplan, developed by Ian Simpson architects, was showcased at the MPIM international property conference in Cannes.

The presentation revealed a new station with three tracks taking trams out to the airport and MediaCity UK. The first floor park would face south over the city.

Under the plan, which has the backing of the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority, the new station could be open by 2014 with funding coming from both private and public sources.
