KONG Attends College
Early in November, the Behavior Club of North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine had the privilege of hosting Mark Hines, of the KONG Company, to speak to our students. In an effort to supplement our classroom learning, the Behavior Club invites guest lecturers to speak about behavioral medicine so our members are better prepared to handle client’s concerns over their pet’s behavioral health.  We asked the KONG Company if they would be willing to speak to the students about the benefits of utilizing behaviorally stimulating toys, such as the Classic KONG, to reduce destructive behaviors, which are often the results of a pet’s boredom.  Noting that many pet owners experience these problems, Mark spoke with passion about methods and techniques for taking an active role and facilitating a positive change in a pet’s life through behavioral toys.

Mark talked of the usefulness of behaviorally stimulating toys in the lives of working canines and explained how these same benefits translate to the lives of family pets. Think your dog doesn’t like toys? According to Mark, not all dogs instinctively know what a toy is or how to use it. Members learned how to teach their pets how to play by assigning value to a toy, rendering it irresistible to even the most stubborn dog. Mark explained that if a dog finds it too difficult to retrieve the treats inside a KONG, your dog may become frustrated and lose interest.  If owners begin with easier challenges before progressing to more difficult games, both the owner and the dog win.

Mark detailed, after an orthopedic surgery, many owners struggle to keep their high energy pets at rest during the long recovery period. Mark recommended using behavioral toys to keep the dog mentally stimulated, preserving vital recovery time by releasing pent up energy and decreasing both the owner’s and the animal’s stress.

In addition to Mark’s lecture, the KONG Company generously donated one KONG product to each attending member to test on their own pets.  Many students who, before Mark’s visit, believed their dog would never play with toys discovered that with a little effort and proper application of the techniques, they were able to interest their pets in their new KONGs for hours at a time! The Behavior Club is so privileged to have had the KONG Company as a guest lecturer. The lessons we learned will be used to help thousands of future clients understand their pet’s behavioral needs.
We thank the KONG Company, and especially Mark Hines, and we hope you can visit us again.

KONG COMMUNITY LETTERS
This month the KONG Company would like to share two letters. One sent to us by a grateful member of the KONG community and the second sent by a wonderful non-profit organization. It is great to be part of a community and product line that truly makes a positive difference in the lives of companion animals and their owners.

KONG Community Letter:

Hi,

KONG Newsletter WinnerMy name is Sarah, and the adorable dog in the pictures is Bailey. Bailey came to my father in law in September as a stray. She was wandering the streets of Texas from the time she was born until she came to him at about 4-5 months old. She was only 13 pounds then, her head and paws were way too big for her body and we could see every one of her ribs. She was very shy and skiddish and it was very obvious she was unsure of her surroundings and seemed to be afraid that anytime she was alone she was going to be left that way and back to being on her own. We gladly took her in and have been loving her ever since. Her first toy was a pink Kong that she immediately took to. Bailey has come a long way in just a few months, and her Kong has come with her! She has chewed through everything from dog beds and blankets to tennis balls (and i mean completely destroying these tennis balls), but Kong is the only thing she cant chew through. She has a few Kong toys, and loves them all. We are so thankful to have them because she can literally chew through anything within a matter of hours. Not being sure of what to get a dog we didn't know at first made me very wary of Kong, but it turns out it was the best investment for her! Thank you so much for putting out a toy unlike any other!!

Sarah
Colorado Springs, CO

Sarah and her dog Bailey are this issue’s “KONG Letter Contest” winners. They will receive a KONG Gift Basket for their entry. Your letters, like the ones above are always welcome and appreciated. If you would like to share your KONG experiences or any KONG news with the KONG community, just email us at:  KONG@kongcompany.com. If your letter is chosen for the next KONG Community Newsletter, you will receive a KONG Gift Basket valued at $120.00.

KONG TRAINING/ACTIVITY
Toy a Month Training Method – Part Two
Last newsletter we discussed the basic benefits of “Toy a Month Training”. The first segment also introduced a few of the possible multi-toy activities. In this segment, we will focus on the benefits of using multiple, treat-stuffed toys. Always supervise the use of new toys until you are certain they are safe to use unattended.

Most of our customers are familiar with the wide array of benefits possible when using a single stuffed Classic KONG toy. A single, treat-stuffed KONG toy can be offered to occupy a dog with a positive activity in a wide variety of situations (home alone, crating, arrival of guests, dinnertime, or just free up time for you to focus on a task). The potential uses are endless.

From a behavioral standpoint the benefits are many. A single treat-stuffed KONG can help shape good behaviors or improve negative ones. Many happy KONG toy users have successfully prevented, improved or eliminated a variety of common problem behaviors like separation anxiety, crate training, destructive chewing, mouthing, barking, digging and more. Remember, most negative behaviors result from boredom and lack of proper alternative activities. Offering your dog a treat-stuffed KONG toy will provide a positive and rewarding activity that is sure to fight boredom.

Taking a preventative approach early on is highly recommended by trainers and behaviorist. Introducing a treat-stuffed KONG at a young age or at regular intervals can help prevent many negative behaviors. For instance, separation anxiety, as many dog owners can attest, is a very serious behavioral condition and very difficult to remedy once diagnosed. To help prevent separation anxiety, calmly offering a treat-stuffed KONG toy prior to leaving your dog alone can help prevent a potential anxiety producing situation.

Training Activities Using Multiple Treat- Stuffed Toys
With each new, stuffable or treat dispensing toy you offer, take the time to properly train your dog how to use them correctly. Always start at the easiest level for each toy. Make sure you fill the toy with treats in front of your dog. Then get down on the floor with your dog to show her how it works, push it around until it releases the first treat. Then let your dog take over. It is very important to let your dog win during introduction and at each progressively harder level. The positive rewards will keep your dog engaged and willing to work for more. Some levels will have to be offered over and over before your dog masters the necessary skills. If you dog becomes frustrated or loses interest you should go back to an easier level.

Some treat dispensing toys have adjustable openings that dictate the level of difficulty and length of playtime. For others the level of difficulty can be adjusted with the size and shape of treats used, typically the smaller the treat the easier it dispenses. Do not use treats larger than the dispensing hole.

For stuffable rubber toys, the larger the treat the more difficult and time consuming the activity. One can also fill most stuffable toys with suitable healthy liquids or a combination of treats and liquid and freeze them to further increase the length and joy of playtime or training.

Once your dog has learned to use a variety of stuffable or treat dispensing toys she is ready to start using multiple toys at once. Multiple toys will increase the length of activity, resulting in greater opportunity to positively occupy or train. Longer lasting positive activities will reduce or eliminate opportunities of developing negative behaviors. Below are two multi-toy methods:

1. Progressive Challenge – fill or stuff three or more toys each progressively more difficult to un-stuff than the next. Offer the treat-stuffed toys all at once. Most dogs will start with the easiest toy before moving to the next level toy. This method ensures an early win with the easy toy, motivating your dog to continue on to the next toys.

2. Multi-Toy Monty – Chose three or more toys, stuffing only one and then offer all toys at once. Your dog will use his senses to determine which toy contains the rewards. Next, stuff alternate toy and repeat process.

Classic KONG ToyKONG STUFF'N RECIPES AND ACTIVITIES
KONG Toys are the original treat-dispensing toys; a properly stuffed KONG Toy will keep your dog busy and content for hours. Along with relieving boredom, a stuffed KONG Toy will provide an enriching activity that exercises both physically and mentally. Remember to reduce your dog’s bowl feeding when offering two or more stuffed KONGs daily. Clean KONGs thoroughly after each use. Top shelf of dishwasher is recommended.

Basic Stuff’N Suggestions
For quick and easy KONG stuffing use any of our KONG Stuff'N brand treats, pastes or ZIGGIES. KONG’s treats are specifically designed to fit KONG toys. Experiment with combinations of two or more KONG Snacks, Easy Treats or ZIGGIES for a longer lasting stuffed KONG session.

Winning KONG Stuff’N Recipe
Pumpkin KONGsicle
1 Can pure pumpkin puree (unsweetened)
1 Cup plain yogurt
2 or more KONG toys

Mix first two ingredients together. Fill KONG toys. Place in freezer.

We make up several of these at once and then give my dog one daily.
The fiber from the pumpkin and the active cultures in the yogurt really help his digestive system. He loves spending time chewing and licking at the KONGsicle.

KONG Cat Letters
This month the KONG Company would like to share a KONG Cat letter sent to us by a grateful member of the KONG Cat community. It is great to be part of a community and product line that truly makes a positive difference in the lives of our feline companions.

Dear KONG Company,

I am thrilled to be writing you to thank you for your wonderful products for cats.  I am a long time cat owner and have been familiar with your products for dogs - which I purchase for my extended family - but when my husband and I got our new kitten (Bear) we needed some new toys.  Our local pet supply store has a range of your products and with an eye on rescuing my hands from Bear's wrestling moves and large paws (and claws - hence his name), I purchased a Kong Hugga Wubba for his Christmas stocking.

On Christmas morning Bear's first gift was his Hugga and it quickly became victim to chewing, wrestling, and "rear paw kicking".  He played for about 20 minutes without stopping - I couldn't believe it!  Sometimes it takes a little time for cats to warm up to new toys, but not the Hugga!  The soft rattling noise is enough to attract without startling, the crinkle "legs" are great for chewing and visual interest, and the rubber Kong base is just perfect for hugging, chewing, and carrying Hugga around the house.

Although I still enjoy wrestling with my Bear, my hands appreciate the break and it's great to see him having hours of fun with his new toy.

Thank you for such a wonderful product and for extending your unique style of pet toys to cats!!!  We look forward to seeing what you will come up with next and will continue to purchase KONG Company products for Bear and his canine cousins in the future.

I will also send some pictures to you through your Wall of Fame e-mail address.

Thanks again,

Elena

Elena and her cat Bear are this issue’s “KONG Cat Letter Contest” winners. They will receive a KONG Cat Gift Basket. Your letters, like the ones above are always welcome and appreciated. CAT ACTIVITY
Playing Safely with Cat Toys
At KONG we strive to construct our cat toys as safely as possible. We are pet owners and animal lovers just as you are, and we do not manufacture any items that we feel uncomfortable giving to our own pets. However, a toy that isn’t used correctly or with proper supervision could present a potential hazard, so we have developed the following tips to help make using our toys a fun, enriching, and worry-free experience.

Tip: Never introduce a new toy without proper supervision.

It’s tempting to take a toy out of the package, toss it to your cat, and move on to other things while your cat plays with her new toy. However, it is especially important to introduce new toys under supervision to see how your cat plays with the toy. Ideally all playtimes should be supervised, but at a minimum you should observe your cat playing with a new toy a few times before considering letting her play with a toy on her own, just to make sure that she handles it safely.

Tip: Teaser toys should never be left alone with a cat.

Teaser toys are items attached to a pole with a string that are used for interactive play with your cat. Strings can present a serious digestive hazard if a cat should happen to ingest a long piece all at once, perhaps even requiring veterinarian attention. They also can get tangles around a cats neck during vigorus play. Therefore, teaser toys should never be left in an area where your cat could access them, but enclosed in a drawer, cabinet, or other secure place and brought out only for interactive play sessions that are controlled by you at all times.

Tip: Inspect toys frequently, and discontinue use if you notice worn, loose, or torn pieces.

KONG Cat toys are designed to hold up under typical levels of play. Yet each cat is unique and will play with a toy differently, causing it to wear at a different pace. If you should notice a toy that becomes ripped, torn, or has loose parts, it is time to remove and discard that toy. For toys with feathers, it is important to remove and discard feathers that become separated from the toy. While cats instinctually are able to capture and consume feathered prey, feathers may occasionally cause irritation to a cat’s throat when swallowed, and in extremely rare instances a more serious digestive problem may develop.

By following these tips, you will greatly increase your comfort level knowing that you are doing your best to provide for your cat’s safety. Properly using cat toys will help enrich a cat’s life, discourage negative displacement behaviors, and help increase your bond with your cat.
