Keystone Oaks Considers Closing Schools

District Says Enrollment Declining

Hundreds of residents packed a meeting Thursday night at Keystone Oaks High School to comment on a plan to close some schools in the district.

The school board is considering consolidating all of its schools in Dormont and closing Aiken and Myrtle elementary schools by 2012.

Many parents attending the meeting want to keep the neighborhood schools, but school district leaders said the changes are necessary because of a dwindling tax base and declining enrollment.

The district expects to lose about 200 students over the next 10 years.

The school board must hold two public meetings on the plan before they can take a vote.
