Operations Manager – Illinois Policy Institute – Chicago/Springfield, IL

The Illinois Policy Institute seeks to fill a new position, Operations Manager. The Operations Manager will lead the “day-to-day” responsibilities of running a nonprofit. The Operations Manager may be located in either our Chicago office or Springfield office. 

The Operations Manager will be in charge of the following key areas: 

  • Human Resources – The Operations Manager will handle all human resources matters related to our growing staff (in the span of three years, our staff has grown from two to eleven). Responsibilities will include managing the hiring process, administering benefit programs, overseeing performance reviews, and ensuring that the Institute follows federal, state, and local labor laws. The Operations Manager will need to handle sensitive personnel issues with discretion.
  • Financial Management – The Operations Manager will be responsible for financial management for the Institute, including payroll, account keeping, and tax filing preparation.
  • Compliance – The Operations Manager will maintain the legal health of the Illinois Policy Institute. Responsibilities will include keeping the organization current on all reporting obligations to the State of Illinois and researching changes in compliance law. Other compliance duties will include maintenance of non-profit registrations, state fundraising registrations, and audit records. 

The ideal candidate for the Operations Manager role will possess the following attributes:

  • Five+ years of experience, preferably in an operations related role
  • Knowledge of and experience with basic human resources and financial management functions
  • Strong organization skills and the ability to effectively multi-task
  • Event planning experience a plus
  • Experience in a nonprofit setting preferred
  • A commitment to the principles of limited government, personal responsibility, and free enterprise
  • A bachelor’s degree

Capitol News Bureau Reporter – Pelican Institute for Public Policy – Baton Rouge, LA

The Pelican Institute for Public Policy, Louisiana’s only free market think tank, is starting a Capitol News Bureau project and is looking for an independent, self-starting journalist to cover state government in Baton Rouge. 

Salary and benefits will be based on experience. 

Responsibilities for this role include:

  • Managing research and analysis on a multitude of issues relating to the state government’s use of taxpayer dollars
  • Covering all aspects of statehouse news when the legislature is in session
  • Monitoring and writing government and policy focused stories emanating from  state agencies and the Governor’s office
  • Covering issues of importance to Louisiana’s electorate, especially those related to policy, politics, and how government involvement helps or hinders the citizenry
  • Conception and execution of compelling, sophisticated stories and video interviews that reach a broad online readership
  • Producing a lively mix of news and analysis that consumers find both relevant and interesting
  • Utilizing new media tools (including Facebook, Twitter, other new media outlets) to maximize public awareness

New Media Program Manager – Atlas Economic Research Foundation – Washington, DC

Position:                      The New Media Program Manager will be involved in creating and marketing video projects for Atlas, and in providing technical consulting to Atlas partners (for independent think tanks, as well as for Web platforms operated by Atlas contractors). 

 The technical consulting aspects of the position will involve developing Webinar-based training sessions for think tank partners.  The position will include some travel.

Attributes:                   Candidates should be highly organized individuals, who love working in a collaborative manner to advance liberty.  Experience in video production and demonstration of a strong aesthetic sense is essential.  The position includes responsibility for working with colleagues to prepare scripts, sole responsibility for producing and editing the final product, and responsibility for disseminating and marketing the final product.   Production skills should include video, lighting, and audio, as well as editing on a Mac.

It is helpful, but not essential, for candidates to also demonstrate knowledge of a broad variety of social networking tools, and have experience with the platforms currently used in-house by Atlas (Final Cut Studio 7, green screen technology).

Programs Associate – Atlas Economic Research Foundation – Washington, DC

Position:                      The Programs Associate will be responsible for implementing Atlas programs under the direction of his/her supervisor.   At least the initial focus of the position will be on the administration of Atlas’s work within the Templeton Freedom Awards program and other award/prize programs.

The Programs Associate will need to: 

  • Ensure Atlas achieves its specified goals, according to its established timeline, within the Templeton Freedom Awards program.    This requires:
    •  A high degree of organization
    • Taking the initiative internally/externally to accomplish project goals
    • Prudence (consulting senior staff, as appropriate, to minimize chance of tarnishing the Atlas brand by being “off-message” in communications to partner)
  • Draft reports on program activities for sharing with donors and other stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with Atlas’s Institute Relations department so that knowledge about think tank partners that comes from the program, can be used throughout the organization. 

The position will report directly to the President.  From time to time, the President may task the Programs Associate with providing support and assistance to other Atlas programs (so they can be completed in a cost-effective manner, and so the Programs Associate has more opportunities to be engaged with the Atlas network.)

  • Highly organized and efficient (strong attention to details, and ability to accomplish tasks in a timely manner)
  • Very easy to work with (bringing an optimistic, can-do attitude to the office, and with strong communication skills)
  • Educated in free-market ideas, especially the Austrian School of Economics.

Development Writer – Pacific Research Institute – San Francisco, CA

The Pacific Research Institute seeks a Development Writer for its San Francisco office. 

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess a college degree in political science or related field with a minimum of 2 years experience in development writing. The candidate must have excellent writing and verbal communication skills and be a team player. Must be able to adapt to a fast pace environment and able to meet deadlines. Must be flexible with a congenial personality and be able to take the initiative in meeting all the job requirements. 

Reports to:     Director, Foundations and Major Gifts 

Primary Responsibilities:

The Development Writer functions as part of the development team. Although the primary responsibility of the Development Writer is to write grant proposals, as part of the development team it is expected that the Development Writer will work with the other members of the team as required. The following job description is not meant to be comprehensive but is a description of general responsibilities. This job description may be amended from time to time as necessary and additional responsibilities may be assigned. 

  • Reports to the Director, Foundations & Major Gifts. Writes proposals and reports for foundations, individual, and corporate fundraising
  • Works with the President and Director, Research, under the Director, Foundations & Major Gift’s direction, to write grant proposals and reports
  • Grant proposals must be tailored to fit interests of specific foundations
  • Meets with the development team, weekly to give an update on follow-up needed with each proposal
  • Identifies and researches new funding sources and reports findings to the President and Director, Foundations & Major Gifts
  • Prepares and processes letters and proposals as appropriate, for new funding targets
  • Works with the Development Associate on direct mail and renewal letters
  • Sends direct mail to prospect list semi-annually and tracks response
