Brief Historical Chronology of the Catholic Church in Kansas
Catholic missionary activity, in the area of present day
Kansas, is reported as early as 1542, when Father
Juan de Padilla, protomartyr of the United States of America,
accompanied by Fr. Juan de la Cruz and Brother Luis de Ubeda or
Escalona, chose to remain to evangelize the Indians after having
accompanied Coronado in his search to Quivira.3
Missionary service to the Indian tribes continued through the
efforts of Father Lacroix (in 1822), Father
Van Quickenborne (from 1827), and Rev. Joseph Lutz of St.
Louis. The tribes visited, during the first half of the 1800s,
included the Peorias, Weas, Pienkishaws (a remnant of the Kaskaskias
known as the Miamis), Pottawattomies, and Kickapoo.
By
1836, the Francis Xavier mission and school was established north of
Fort Leavenworth at Kickapoo, and Father
Christian Hoecken had established a permanent mission among the
Pottawattomies by 1838.
In 1841, Mother
Philippine-Rose Duchesne (born in Grenoble, France in 1769, and
died at St. Charles, Missouri in 1852) with three other sisters of
the Society of the Sacred Heart opened a school for girls in the
mission, and a school for boys was opened by the Jesuits the
following year.
In 1847, the Pottawattomies began moving
to their new reservation on the Kaw River, just west of the present
site of Topeka, which developed into the St.
Mary's Jesuit Mission and college. Learn more about the
Pioneer Priests
and Brothers of St. Mary's Mission and The
Pioneer Sisters of St. Mary's Mission.
In 1851, the
Rt. Rev. J. B. Miege, of the Society
of Jesus, was consecrated Bishop of Messene and appointed Vicar
Apostolic of the Indian Territory east of the Rocky Mountains.
He chose to reside at St. Mary's Mission.
In August 1855
Bishop Miege chose to established himself at Leavenworth.
In
1857, the Nebraska
Territory was formed into a separate vicariate "...leaving
only Kansas Territory to Bishop Miege..."
In
April of the same year, Father Henry Lemke, OSB, Father Augustine
Wirth, and Frater (Brother) Casimir Seitz were sent to Doniphan,
Kansas Territory were they established St.
Benedict's Abbey. They soon moved the community to
the town of Atchison, "...where St.
Benedict’s College, the forerunner of today’s
Benedictine College, opened its doors in October, 1859..."
In November 1858, The
Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth were founded by Mother Xavier
Ross and 14 companions in Leavenworth.
In 1868, the
Cathedral at Leavenworth, Kansas was consecrated. (Read more
about the early Leavenworth
parishes, online at The
Leaven.)
In 1877, the Diocese of Leavenworth was
established, with Bishop Louis Mary Fink, O. S. B. became Vicar
Apostolic of Kansas until Leavenworth
was made an episcopal see, in 1877, when he became its first bishop
with jurisdiction over the State
of Kansas.
In 1886, the Diocese
of Wichita and the Diocese
of Concordia were established from portions of the Diocese
of Leavenworth. The Rt. Rev. James O'Reilly, of Topeka,
Kansas, was appointed as the first Bishop of the newly formed
Diocese of Wichita, however, he died, on 26 July, 1887, before his
consecration. On 30 Nov 1888, Rt. Rev. John Joseph
Hennessy was consecrated as the new Bishop of the Diocese
of Wichita. The Rev. Richard Scannell, of Nashville,
Tennessee, became the first Bishop of Concordia, and remained so
until 30 Jan 1891, when he was relocated to Omaha.
In
1944, the Diocese of Concordia was transferred to Salina.
In
1947, the Diocese of Leavenworth was transferred to Kansas City.
In 1951, the Diocese of Dodge City was established from a
portion of the Diocese of Wichita.
On August 9, 1952,
Kansas City was made the Archdiocese
of Kansas City.
In 1995, Leavenworth and Concordia
were reestablished as titular sees.
