MATCH REPORT
Tottenham won the first all London
Final more easily than the 2‑1 score suggests. The two sides matched
each other in fitness, but Tottenham's greater skill and their ability
to muster more men in attack prevailed over Chelsea's admirable energy
and persistence.
There were a few startling moments
before the first goal came, just before half‑time. Robertson's powerful
left‑foot volley in the fourteenth minute was turned expertly round the
post by Bonetti, and a similar Robertson effort shortly afterwards just
cleared the bar. For Chelsea, Cooke's fine shot at the end of a superb
dodging run was punched over by Jennings.
Then, on half‑time, Tottenham scored.
It was a case of third time lucky for Robertson, their Scottish
international right‑winger, as he cracked the ball, again left‑footed,
low past Bonetti's right hand after Harris had got in the way of
Mullery's pile‑driver from outside the area.
While still never reaching their
peaks, the Tottenham players remained markedly superior in the second
half, and they effectively clinched the Cup with a second goal after
sixty‑eight minutes. Robertson helped on Mackay's long throw‑in from the
left, and Saul, pivoting quickly and instinctively, hooked the ball in.
The pace dropped as Tottenham casually
began to roll their passes, working in neat squares and triangles. With
five minutes to go Tambling headed a goal for Chelsea, but they had left
it too late to save the match. |
