Game 35: Hornets @ Wizards

A snapshot of the bottom of the Western playoff chase:

7. HOU (21-16)
8. OKC (20-16)
-------------------------
9. UTA (20-17)
10. NO (18-16)
11. MEM (18-18)
12. LAC (16-18)

Looks like we're shaping up for another tough stretch run. Games like today's at Washington are huge if we want to stay in this till the end.

Game 34: Hive Live

New Jersey 99 (3–33) | New Orleans 103 (18–16)

Good thing we don't count style points, eh?

The Hornets held about a 10 point lead through most of this game, but a dry spell in the fourth (particularly from deep and from the stripe) turned what really should have been a blowout into a nail-biter.

Positive Takeaways: the Hornets won what could have been a (death) trap game, David played like a fiend (32 points in 34 minutes), the Hornets continue to impress in a major way when it comes to passing, Darius continues to be efficient off the bench, the Hornets are on a 5 game winning streak, and the Saints are in the playoffs (with a bye!).

Negative Takeaways: the Hornets needed 40 minutes of Chris Paul to defeat a 3 win team at the hive (hey! that's the name of this blog!), the Hornets have only won a single game by double-digits (against the Clippers) and are averaging a 5.7 point margin when they win (4.4 if you pull out the Clipper game), and they allowed Courtney Lee and Keyon "Can you believe I still have an NBA contract?" Dooling to score 49 points between them.

Baby steps, y'all. Baby steps.

(Bullets after the jump.)

Game 34: Hornets vs. Nets

For the first time in some time, I'm sort of optimistic about a game.

Seriously, this will not be topped in 2010. Book it.

Item 8 on today's Daily Dime: "The Hornets defeated the Thunder on Wednesday without scoring any points on fast breaks. It was the second game this season in which New Orleans failed to register a fast-break point (the other was a loss in New York on Nov. 2). Only one other NBA team has had played a game without posting a fast-break point this season. The Spurs did it in a victory at Washington on January 2."

The weird thing? At 92 possessions a game, this is by far the fastest Hornet team since 1999. In fact, it's the second fastest team in franchise history since the run and gun days of the early 90's.

The All-Decade New Orleans Hornets of Charlotte

As you may have heard, it is now 2010. And since decade-ending and list-making go together like awful movies and Nicolas Cage, it's time to lay out the best of the best.

The criteria: players from November 2000 to December 2009 are eligible, and I suppose we'll need two guards, two forwards, and a center. And just for fun, let's toss in a 6 man bench too.

Game 33: Hive Five

And for the first time in nearly nine months, the Hornets are back above .500.

(Okay, that sounds way more dramatic than it probably should.)

Homecoming: Chris Paul

Earlier tonight, ESPN aired an episode of "Homecoming with Rick Reilly" featuring Chris Paul.  The segment was filmed in Wait Chapel on Wake Forest's campus... and it was obviously filmed before mid-November, because Byron Scott was in the audience and actually called upon to answer a few questions.

If you've never seen the show, it's an hour-long program that takes famous sports figures back to their hometowns (hence the title) and delves in their life stories (hence the appeal).

Chris Paul had his family (mother Robin, father Charles, brother C.J., a few aunts, his grandmother, some former coaches, and 2000 fans) in the audience.  They were called upon at various points to give anecdotes about the Hornets superstar.  A really enjoyable watch, all in all.  Some notes after the jump...

New Orleans Hornets star Chris Paul played basketball against Right Guard Fast Break CP+3 Sweepstakes winner, Eric Williams on Saturday, Sept. 26 as part of his annual Winston-Salem Weekend. Williams, of Virginia Beach, VA, was chosen from more than 17,000 online applicants who signed up for the Right Guard Fast Break CP+3 Sweepstakes at RightGuard.com.

Williams, a former semi-pro basketball player, held his own against Paul during the exhibition. The two played H-O-R-S-E, twenty-one and finished with a two-on-two game with Paul teamed with brother CJ Paul and Williams with best friend Marcus Likely.
