BTSC Steelers Daily Six Pack- Big Ben's No Longer Jerky Edition

IX-It's official Ben Roethlisberger will not be forcing his beef jerky on any of us anymore according to the N.Y. Times fifth down blog.  The company that produces the tasty meat with Big Ben's name on it has decided enough is enough.  According to the article Rothlisberger made 2.5 million dollars in endorsement monies last year and could soon lose more than his beef jerky endorsement.  Roethlisberger receives compensation from big sponsors like Nike who could drop the star because quite frankly, they don't need him, especially if he can't keep his beef jerky out of "small, less than five-foot-wide, single-commode bathroom[s]."

X-Terry Bradshaw took a break from making piss-poor jokes with Howie Long and Michael Strahan to actually make a tiny bit of sense.  Feel free to watch the video below and also feel free to read The Score for a transcript and some comments about the situation.  My favorite line by Bradshaw is his statement "ask yourself, would they pay any attention to you if you weren’t who you are? And of course not, because I’m not that attractive and neither is Ben."

BTSC 2010 Community Mock Draft - Pick #14 by the Seattle Seahawks: C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson

Many thanks to cleveland sucks for promptly getting his pick in for the Seattle Seahawks at #14. We've got a ways to go before next Thursday, so hopefully we can keep this pace up for the next few days. Next up? The New York Giants at #15, represented by EnglishSteelerGotBanned. -Michael-

*****************

One thing that I know about Pete Carroll is that he is obsessed with speed at the RB position. Look at his USC teams and you will see Reggie Bush or some type of Bush clone (Joe McKnight) prevalent in his offensive schemes. The Reggie Bush clone's name for the Seabirds will be C.J. Spiller, the fast and powerful RB from Clemson.

Wideouts At #1: The Steeler Experience

Bumped from the fanposts. Good read here about the history of the wide receiver position in Pittsburgh. - Michael -

************

WIDEOUTS AT #1: THE STEELER EXPERIENCE

The Pittsburgh Steelers have drafted six players, identified as “wide receiver” in their illustrious history, the first such choice coming in 1971.  Prior to that, players drafted as “end” were indistinguishable from each other as to their being of the wide, split, tight, or “of bench” variety.

In the wake of the Santonio Holmes trade, some background is in order preceding the ’71 choice, and one needs to go back more than a quarter of a century, to ’84, for the last time a wide receiver drafted #1 by Rooney U. remained in Black & Gold following their first contract.

We Interrupt Your Regular Programming...The Historiography Of The Pittsburgh Steelers Will Soon Be Even Longer (And Better)

Wow, what a whirlwind the past few days have been in Steeler Nation. No need for me to rehash it for you, though it is worth noting that news broke late Monday that a Pittsburgh judge has dismissed the disorderly conduct charges previously held against Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Jeff Reed. The usually reliable kicker who moonlights as a nudist is off the hook this time, but considering the dark cloud resting squarely above the proud franchise, I'd advise Reed to be careful and avoid any sort of trouble if he has any desire to continue his career in Pittsburgh beyond the 2010 season.

As if writing about all the latest developments and conversing with you all throughout the day wasn't enough, I also got a real nice surprise in my inbox this morning. A note from Chad Millman, a senior deputy editor of ESPN The Magazine and the man behind the witty, informative, and conversational 'Behind The Bets' blog on ESPN.com. You may be familiar with his name if you ever listen to Bill Simmons' 'B.S. Report Podcast'. Simmons likes to wager on sports and his go to guy for a good long talk is Mr. Millman.

Anyway, Millman has a book coming out in September that Steelers fans will be interested in reading. The book is co-authored by Shawn Coyne, a Pittsburgh native now enjoying the freedom to be a choosy and particular literary agent following his tremendously successful career in the publishing industry.

It's titled 'The Ones Who Hit The Hardest: The Steelers, the Cowboys, the '70s and the Fight for America's Soul

There's more...

BTSC 2010 Community Mock Draft - Pick #13 by the San Francisco 49ers: Joe Haden, CB, Florida

We've been rightfulyl distracted this past few days, but onward we go with the 2010 BTSC Community Mock Draft. Great stuff here from an old school reader and fellow, _.58._. Next up? The Seattle Seahawks once again, though this time they'll be represented by cleveland sucks rather than NYSteelerFan4. Let's try to get a few of these picks cranked out in the next 24 hours. Thanks all for everything so far! - Michael Bean (Blitz) -

**************

In the Bay Area of California there exists an NFL Holy Grail of sorts, on a local level. The area has long been divided between the Raiders whacked out fanbase, and the 49ers faithful. Presently, with both teams in a prolonged rut, there are fans starving for success, and willing to jump one way or the other. Both ownerships know this, and the race to become relevant once again carries more than just your typical desire to succeed. It would be an economic windfall.

DA declines to press charges against Steelers' Roethlisberger [Letter added]

Citing a lack of evidence, today at 2 PM, Ocmulgee Judicial Court DA Fred Bright held a press conference and announced his decision to not press charges against Steelers' star quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.  In his press conference, DA Bright made multiple references to a letter sent by the family of the accuser asking him not to press charges.  He also claims that alleged victim, intoxicated, made multiple contradictory statements regarding the alleged assault, including that he raped her, that they had sex, and that he did not rape her.

Santonio Holmes Traded To New York Jets For 5th Round Pick!

My oh my. The Santonio Holmes era in Pittsburgh comes to an abrupt halt as the six time Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers traded away the talented but troubled wide receiver to the New York Jets. That's not entirely shocking in and of itself, but some might be scratching their head wondering why the Steelers were only able to secure a 5th round draft pick in this year's draft in exchange for the former Super Bowl MVP.

Couple thoughts from me on this...

First of all, before I share my thoughts about Holmes specifically, a few thoughts from me about the compensation we received from the Jets in return for the MVP of Super Bowl XLIII, as well as my long overdue evaluation of the Steelers draft situation. I suppose I'm glad I waited to do so as some might believe that everything's been thrown into a tizzy by this trade. Not so fast. That's not how the Steelers have ever conducted business and it's pretty damn foolish to think that they suddenly lost their sense and made any sort of rash decision here.

To begin, I've read an amazing number of comments that echo this sentiment: 'a 5th rounder? That's practically just giving him away!'
