Part III: Beefing up the secondary through free agency

Colts' safety Antoine Bethea grabs one of his four interceptions in 2009. He will likely be a restricted free agent in '10, and for the right price, someone the Buccaneers should take a hard look at.

Colts' safety Antoine Bethea grabs one of his four interceptions in 2009. He will likely be a restricted free agent in '10, and for the right price, someone the Buccaneers should take a hard look at.

In this third and final installment of examining available free agent safeties, let’s look at arguably two of the best safeties available in free agency, the BearsDanieal Manning and the ColtsAntoine Bethea. Both are free safeties, meaning Tanard Jackson would likely have to move to strong safety unless either Manning or Bethea is willing to make the move.

Manning has played an intricate part in the Bears’ success on defense in recent years. Manning played in Super Bowl XLI in his rookie season, a game which the Bears lost to the Colts. In 2009, he recorded a career-high 70 solo tackles along with a sack, one interception while forcing two fumbles and recovering three.

At age 27, the 5-foot-11, 201-pound safety led a secondary unit that was ranked 13th against the pass in ’09, and his 4.48 speed allows him to keep up with most No.3 receivers in man coverage. Manning has played a key role in the Bears’ success on defense in the latter half of the decade, and is likely entering the prime of his career.

Leadership and Momentum- a real winning combination

If you lose it early enough, there is time to recover. Everyone who watched the Super Bowl saw Peyton Manning sitting on the bench for almost the entire 2nd quarter, only to sit back down after the Saints recovered an onside kick, and took the momentum in the 3rd quarter. Of course, Drew Brees was recognized for his efforts.

While this is an old-timers video, perhaps no Bucs game in history saw such a momentum change as the 1981 game in Oakland against the Raiders.

The Raiders came into the game with nothing to speak of. They were the Super Bowl champs, but were playing like chumps. They had been shut out for three games in a row! They scored the first 3 points, then took a safety. they were dominating the game in such fashion, that the Bucs did not even get a first down in the first half. Yet Tampa Bay only trailed by 15 points at the intermission.

The Bucs came out in the 3rd quarter and picked up right where they left off. It was midway through the 3rd quarter, and Tampa Bay had not so much as one single first down.

Then, Doug Williams caught fire. He was never one to throw for a high completion percentage, but Williams had a canon for an arm, and was a born leader. From 1976 through 1983, The Bucs started 50 games without Doug Williams as Quarterback. They won only 5 of them.

If Josh Freeman is going to be a part of the turn around here in Tampa Bay, he is going to have to show his team, and himself as well as his coaches, that he is a natural leader.

The Game is called by the immortal team of Madden & Summerall...enjoy.

Geno Hayes sidelined 3-4 months

Hey Bucem, Rjblitz02 here with some bad news:

Bucs WLB Geno Hayes will be sidelined 3-4 months after undergoing surgery in late January to repair a torn labrum sustained in Week 17.

Hayes will miss all offseason activities, but he's expected to return to the field by training camp. Still, it's a situation to monitor. Hayes had a breakout season on the weakside, and the Bucs were expected to make strongside a priority this offseason. The serious injury to Hayes makes outside linebacker an even bigger need.
Just heard the information, i believe confirmed by pewterreport.com.  I really thought Geno did a great job coming in this year to fill the spot number 55 left. Ofcourse we all know what happened with Tanard Jackson and having to take Philips back to safety, and all that nonsense.
Hayes will most likely miss all the offseason activities, so we all know weakside linebacker will now become a priority in the draft. In my opinion, i think the Bucs should take a DT the first round. After that, it's all them. How do you guys think we can mix in Wide Receiver, Strong Safety, Linebacker (both weak and strong) in this draft? Who are some of the better linebackers in free agency?
Discuss away :) Go Bucs!!!!
-Rjblitz02

Also, A minor update by SOGWDNC- Wilks did indeed undergo surgery too in January and will miss offseason activities.

For winning our last caption contest. His caption: "FIVE, Five dollar footlong" won by the narrow margin of 7 votes. NoleScout99 please contact Niko or myself by clicking the envelopes next to our names at the bottom of the page in order to claim your prize. Look for the next offseason caption contest sometime over the next week or so (and I promise to not pick a picture in which a guy is holding up any fingers this time).

In this second installment of examining available free agent safeties, let’s look at how these two strong safeties would fit into the Buccaneers’ secondary. The Saints’ Roman Harper and the Texans' Bernard Pollard.

As we’ve discussed, strong safety is the weaker of the Bucs' two safety spots. While Tanard Jackson is versatile enough to play both safety positions, the Bucs likely want to keep the young star happy at free safety, so strong safety would be a priority.

Take recent Super Bowl champion Roman Harper, for instance. Harper recorded 81 solo tackles in 2009, second on the team and a career high. Though he did not record an interception, he spent most of his time helping free up teammate Darren Sharper for one of his league leading nine picks.
