Horns Beat Jayhawks 3-1, Game Three Open Thread

[UPDATE: A Kevin Lusson grand slam and Kevin Keyes 2-run homer gave Texas an offensive boost, taking control early and coasting to a 10-4 victory. The sweep moves Texas to 26-7 and 10-2 in the conference.]

Texas (25-7, 9-2 Big XII) got just enough offense and another brilliant pitching performance for a 3-1 conference win over Kansas, running its winning streak to 7 games. The win ensured a series victory over Kansas for only the second time in six years and gives Texas a 2 1/2 game lead over Kansas State for fist place in the conference thanks to a 13-1 Texas A&M loss to Baylor. Cole Green improved to 7-0 on the season and Chance Ruffin picked up his 8th save. Brandon Workman will be on the mound today hoping for another Sunday offensive breakout.

Horns Beat Kansas 3-2 in Extra Innings -- Game Two Open Thread

[UPDATE: Another close win over Kansas today, this time 3-1 behind a very strong start from Cole Green (7 IP, 1 ER), a Tant Shepherd home run and two manufactured runs. Texas improves to 9-2 in the conference and goes for the sweep tomorrow at 1 PM]

It was a thriller at UFCUDFF on Friday night. Taylor Jungmann pitched well (7 IP, 2 ER), and Chance Ruffin kept the Horns alive through several tight spots (3.1 IP, 0 ER). Texas had several near misses that would've ended the game favorably, notably a Russell Moldenhauer double that was two feet from a home run and two strikeouts with the bases loaded in the ninth.

But, as the Bard would say, all's well that ends well. Jordan Weymouth hit a pinch hit triple in the 11th, Kevin Lusson walked, and Tim Maitland stayed hitless with a sacrifice fly to right that plated the winning run. The 3-2 win snapped a four game regular season losing streak to the Jayhawks and moved Texas to 24-7 (8-2).

Weekend Preview: This is Our Sport

[UPDATE: Jordan Weymouth now has two hits in his Longhorn career. Tonight Weymouth hit a one-out triple and scored the winning run on a Tim Maitland sac fly for a 3-2 Texas win in 11 innings. Hoby Milner got the win by getting one out. Texas improves to 24-7 on the year]

The Jayhawks from Lawrence visit the Disch this weekend, and it's not for a basketball game. During hoops season Longhorn fans are on the outside looking in on the kind of success that Kansas has enjoyed through the years, but baseball season brings with it a return to the natural order ("natural" can also be read as "football").

Despite the disparity in program prestige, however, Kansas has had Texas' number in recent years. The Longhorns suffered a three-game sweep in Lawrence last season and have lost the KU series in four of the past five years. However, this season Texas is entering the weekend playing its best ball of the season, whereas Kansas has been very difficult to get a read on.

Since grabbing a signature series win in Baton Rouge against LSU, the Jayhawks have been maddeningly inconsistent. Immediately after taming the Tigers, Kansas took the short trip down I-10 and proceeded to lose two in a row to Tulane in what has been a down year for the Wave. On their return to the midwest, they dropped another two straight to the not-so-mighty Billikens of St. Louis.

But, Kansas has been decent in league play. They sit at 3-2-1 after taking the series from Baylor in Waco and going 1-1-1 against the aggies because of travel rules. So you never know what you're going to get with this year's version of the Baseball Jayhawks; but when they're on, they're dangerous.

Freshman guard Avery Bradley confirmed on Thursday that he will submit his name for the NBA Draft, ending several weeks of speculation surrounding just such a move.

Noting that he will stay enrolled in school for the spring semester and complete his coursework, Bradley left open the possibility of returning by pledging to schedule his individual workouts around his classes.

As long as Bradley keeps himself in good academic standing with the university, withdraws his name before the May 8 deadline, pays for his transportation costs to workouts and does not hire an agent, he could return to school.

It's likely that if Bradley receives word that he could go in the middle of the first round, he will likely end his Texas career after one season.

Game Two vs TAMUCC Open Thread

[No offensive explosion tonight, just a nice 6-2 victory over the Islanders. Baseball returns to action this weekend, finally back in Austin, against Kansas.]

Austin Dicharry will allegedly take the mound tonight at 6:05 PM (thanks R00T4UT) at UFCUDFF. The Islanders didn't put up much resistance last night, raising Texas' team batting average seven points in the one night. Hopefully it'll be more of the same tonight. Dicharry needs a good pitching performance and strong run support to raise his confidence after a tough start to the 2010 campaign.
