"I was a little surprised ... we haven't done that since I've been here," Weber told "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on WMVP-AM 1000. "But those students were there at 7:30 in the morning, they kept energy for 3 1/2 hours, they went home for a little bit, probably drank some Red Bull, came and sat in line at 4:30 ... And the loudest it was the whole night was the last couple of plays. I think they had so much energy stored up in them, they just thought, what the heck, let's go storm the court."

This has been the subject of some discussion lately, worth another quote.

Illinois now sits at 9-3 in the conference but still faces a rough closing stretch. The Illini figure to need at least 1 more Big Ten win to stay on the bubble; two more wins would make their bid a lock. With home games against Ohio State and Minnesota looking like toss-ups, plus a winnable road game at Michigan, the Illini will have an opportunity to clinch their spot in the NCAA Tournament field regardless of what happens at the Big Ten Tournament. There's still work to be done, but their position looks infinitely better than it did 24 hours ago.

Some key stats Illinois' win over Wisconsin

So now that we have had some time to digest what happened last night, I would like to take a moment to point out some of the more telling statistics as to how and why the Illini won last night's game.

  • Wisconsin has an extremely lopsided game of late, and it bit them last night. They took 29 threes and only 27 two pointers. When you take that many, you had better be making them, and the Badgers only sank 11 (36%). Some of that should very rightly go to the credit of the Illini defense at guard, (D.J. Richardson, Bill Cole, Jeff Jordan. Excellent work) but some also can be credited to just cold shooting. The Badgers have relied on the 3 all year, but it is getting out of hand when you only make 9 two point shots in a game, and only get to the line nine times. There was never much of a challenge to the Illini's interior defense.
  • Rebounding. We know Cole and Mike Davis each had a nice night on the glass, grabbing 8 each, but having been out rebounded by the likes of Iowa and Michigan State rather significantly it comes as a surprise that the Illini would do this well against the Badgers. Like good as in 32-25. These are the same Illini that supposedly are too thin and lanky to box out their stout Big 10 peers. Some of this again goes to the fact that like the Illini Wisconsin is giving up positioning by big men so that they can take perimeter shots. Even so, nice work.

How do you even begin to pick a first-team all-conference? Is Turner the best point guard in the conference? Demetri McCamey has been shooting nearly 60 percent in his last four games. Since when did he become so unguardable? These are things I think about at least seven times a day.

Bruce Weber Emotional Report Card: A Win in Madison

Last night Bruce had had a pretty good night. Beating up on one of the better teams in the conference in one of the toughest places to play, and getting himself a very nice boost in the tournament resume too. You might think this would mean Bruce would be in a good mood overall. Well lets find out

Beating up Bo Ryan and the Badgers makes Bruce feel:

An emotion we interpret as: Hey Bo check the scoreboard looks like we just might pull this one out.

Hey wait a minute, this is new....

"Well I can always find things to yell at him about I promise you. He gets lackadaisical on defense. He just got player of the week, "The Journey" is here following him. And I’m thinking oh my god, this is what we been going through for three years. Every time you complement him he soon gets back to his old ways….some turnovers, some bad decisions, but then he got clicking. He’s really playing like we want him to be. If he could guard we’d really have something, but right now we’re happy with what he’s given us."
