Randleman vs. Gracie, Villasenor vs. "Jacare" official for May 15 Strikeforce event

A light-heavyweight bout between Kevin Randleman (17-14 MMA, 0-1 SF) and Roger Gracie (2-0 MMA, 0-0 SF), as well a middleweight bout between Joey Villasenor (27-6 MMA, 2-0 SF) and Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza (11-2 MMA, 1-0 SF), are both official for next month's "Strikeforce St. Louis: Heavy Artillery" event.

Strikeforce officials announced the bouts overnight.

The event takes place May 15 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. Both bouts are part of the night's Showtime-televised main card.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) first reported the Randleman vs. Gracie bout in March. Additionally, the Villasenor vs. "Jacare" bout has long been rumored for the card, which also features a heavyweight title between champion Alistair Overeem and Brett Rogers.

Randleman, a two-time NCAA Division I national wrestling champion who became an early UFC heavyweight champion, has been stuck in a funk in his later career. The 38-year-old has lost seven of his past nine fights since late 2004, and in a June 2009 Strikeforce debut, he gassed after the first round and dropped a unanimous decision to Mike Whitehead.

Now in a must-win situation, he faces a member of the famed Gracie clan. Roger Gracie, an accomplished Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitor and 2005 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship winner (in the 88-98-kg class and the open-weight division), is 2-0 since his move to MMA. However, he hasn't fought professionally since a submission win over Yuki Kondo at Sengoku Second Battle in May 2008.

Villasenor, meanwhile, looks to extend his current four-fight win streak. After a 15-fight win streak from 2002 to 2006, Villasenor went 2-3 in now-defunct organizations such as PRIDE and EliteXC. The Greg Jackson-trained fighter, though, has since rebounded for wins over Riki Fukuda, Ryan Jensen, Phil Baroni and Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos. However, ring rust could be a concern for the well-rounded fighter; his upcoming fight is his first since June 2009.

Souza, meanwhile, looks to build off a first-round submission victory over Matt Lindland in his Strikeforce debut this past December. It was his 10th submission victory in 11 career wins. The former DREAM fighter is one of the world's top-ranked middleweights and could solidify his case for a future title shot with a win over Villasenor.

The latest "Strikeforce St. Louis: Heavy Artillery" card includes:

MAIN CARD
  • Champ Alistair Overeem vs. Brett Rogers (for heavyweight title)
  • Andrei Arlovski vs. Antonio Silva
  • Ronaldo "Souza" Jacare vs. Joey Villasenor
  • Roger Gracie vs. Kevin Randleman
  • Lyle Beerbohm vs. Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro*
PRELIMINARY CARD (un-aired)
  • Justin DeMoney vs. Jesse Finney
  • Lee Brousseau vs. Fransisco "Kiko" France
  • Mike Chandler vs. Sal Woods
  • Pat Benson vs. Erik Steenberg
  • Tom Aaron vs. Matt Ricehouse
  • Darryl Cobb vs. Booker DeRousse
* - Not officially announced

Damn!  Stacked card!!!

This is what you call stacked?  =/

bf23 on Apr 23, 2010 at 9:27 am ET
This IS an awesome card.

Rogers / Overeem.

Arlovski / Silva.

As an added bonus we get to see Roger Gracie and Jacare, the #1 and #2 BJJ exponents / submission grapplers in the game - both of whom are potentially world-beating.

grapple420 on Apr 23, 2010 at 9:44 am ET
Just curious.

How is Rolles Gracie's BJJ compared to Rogers?

machinegun on Apr 23, 2010 at 9:58 am ET
Roger's bjj is up there with Marcello Garcia's. I'm really excited to see this fight.. it can be the Moster by Donkey Kong beatdown, or Roger by textbook submission.. kimura anyone?

TokyoJoe on Apr 23, 2010 at 10:08 am ET
IMO Roger Gracie is a better grappler than Marcello. Gracie via any submission he chooses.

The dude really does have the best skills in the world.

rominho on Apr 23, 2010 at 10:35 am ET
Roger is Royalty in BJJ.

Just for you to have an ideia, in his shool here in London he won't even teach to the "general public" ... he will give classes to his black belts only.

grapple420 on Apr 23, 2010 at 10:52 am ET
Sounds more like a BJJ D-bag then if you ask me.

Too good to teach the general public just because he is a Gracie?

Doubt it happens, but now Im hoping Randleman smashes this guy.

coreymb on Apr 23, 2010 at 10:58 am ET
I don't think it's just because he's a Gracie..more than anything he's one of the best, if not the best practioner in the world, atm. Can you imagine the requests he gets to train people? Not even including the list of bb's as is of his..

Anytime you have the best it's extremely hard getting trained by that person, be it in anything.

machinegun on Apr 23, 2010 at 10:58 am ET
not a db at all. Often at high level schools, the top guys teach only the top guys in the school, whereas their other top blackblelts will instruct the lower classes.
Its all about delegation of time, and proper utilization of your talents. Any black/brownbelt can help white and bluebelts improve on their games, but in order for them to improve, they need a SERIOUS BB, like Roger, Renzo, Danaher, Garcia, etc (there really are MANY).

frankie2times on Apr 23, 2010 at 11:27 am ET
im fortunate enough to live in an area that has two world class academies with world class trainers considered by many to be some of the best in the world. I trained in fullerton CA under Leo Vieira and Lucas Leite. Leo is WIDELY considered to be one of the best BJJ practisioners and Lucas is said to have the best half guard on the planet.  I currently train under Erik Paulson at CSW fullerton. BOTH extremely high level academies and although allot of thier time is spent doing seminars around the world to top level athletes, they ALWAYS schedule in time to come in and train beginners.

frankie2times on Apr 23, 2010 at 11:31 am ET
I've been training with some of the best in the world of MMA, but now i need to find a "spelling academy" yikes.

machinegun on Apr 23, 2010 at 11:57 am ET
thats pretty much how the guys are where I train.. They're there for a while, then they go off on seminars, then they're back, etc..

Its always a pleasure when Renzo teaches a class himself.. those techniques are usually the ones people just don't forget.

Rolles and Roger are cousins and very similar in size. Roger is no doubt ahead in terms of natural ability. watch his youtube clips from the mundials. siiiiiiiick jiu jitsu.

MMASupreme on Apr 23, 2010 at 3:04 pm ET
Roger is MUCH better than Rolles.  Roger is the best BJJ practitioner.

frankie2times on Apr 23, 2010 at 7:01 pm ET
really? tell that to Alexandre Ribeiro.

shaun2000 on Apr 23, 2010 at 8:15 pm ET
good point.  to be fair they both have three wins against each other in bjj and grappling matches (but Ribeiro has won the last two meetings).  Strikeforce should sign Ribeiro and have them meet in mma, where Ribeiro is also 2-0.  (info from wiki, Roger Gracie's record)

iowa_fight_fan on Apr 23, 2010 at 9:47 am ET
This card is pretty good top to bottom.

I realize it is not the best card in the world, but considering I get to see some good match ups, and do not have to pay $50+ to see it, I am more than happy with this card!!

Justin DeMoney, who is fighting on the undercard, is from my hometown. He looks good against local guys who do not train at all, anxious to see how he does against someone who takes the sport seriously.

Was disappointed last month when he was scheduled to face Kevin Burns in Des Moines, then backed out for "personal reasons" 2 weeks before the event.

kevin randlemen's record is looking worst and worst every year,  i think hes done,  but who knows , but  the  way the gracie's have been looking he might actually win this

FrostByte on Apr 23, 2010 at 9:20 am ET
I can't believe I am saying this, but Wes Sims has a better record...sad day.

bf23 on Apr 23, 2010 at 9:26 am ET
Wes Sims may have a better win / loss ratio, but he most certainly does not have a better record.

Sims is the can of all cans.

Randleman, on the other hand, just has no cardio.  If he manages to get himself fit, he can be a very useful gatekeeper for Strikeforce at LHW or the occasional HW fight.

Either way, he's a useful test for Gracie - as Randleman may be able to avoid Gracie's guard for a little while with his wrestling.  Still, Gracie by first round rear naked choke.

joeEbenz on Apr 23, 2010 at 9:36 am ET
Randleman has also faced MUCH better fighters than Sims as well..

FrostByte on Apr 23, 2010 at 4:56 pm ET
Sir, those are not man-tits. "Bitch tits" look a lot different then what Randleman's are. His are normal. If he is taking the magic substance, then he is taking some medication to combat the bitch tits. But he doesn't look to have any bitch tits.

Artmarshall on Apr 23, 2010 at 9:47 am ET
don't group them together. (gracie's) this dude is tough. i've been waiting for him to come back and fight. he is part of the newer gen of the family. he's still under 30. obviously he hasn't showed very much in his fights but i do believe he'll be more prepared than most of the gracies we've seen lately. jmo

Tubekid on Apr 23, 2010 at 11:49 am ET
Nice card no doubt about it.  On Showtime right??

Randleman is done this is tailor made for a Gracie submission.  Randleman recently lost to Mike Whitehead!!! Who has ZERO credible wins in his career.  Maybe Rothwell, but that was what 7 or 8 years ago??

Can't wait for Jacare vs Joey V

coreymb on Apr 23, 2010 at 12:54 pm ET
Yep, showtime it is.

It appears this is an easy W for Gracie but people were saying the same things about Rolles Gracie going up against Beltran!

Just never know.. but with the way Randleman has performed lately I'd be reallly shocked with Roger losing.

If Werdum loses to Fedor, will he get the next title shot?

Not that I don't love the Overeem vs. Rogers matchup (standup war)

but this should be a non-title match. I mean what if Rogers wins? Does he fight Fedor again?

Cocker is just counting on Overeem winning the fight. Things don't always go according to plan.

They will never learn their lesson.

grapple420 on Apr 23, 2010 at 9:47 am ET
You're acting as if Fedor is going to fight in SF again.  I dont think we can say for sure that he ever will. Sounds to me like SF and M1 are a long ways apart with some of their issues.

I know M1 says he will be ready in June, but they are also expecting alot of things out of SF that I dont think Coker is willing to do.

09_gheussker on Apr 23, 2010 at 12:29 pm ET
In a perfect world Werdum beats Fedor, Werdum goes back to UFC, loses to one of the HW (maybe gets a rematch vs JDS) and Fedor becomes a non issue as he continues to fight the garbage M1 cooks up for him. Look, I know as of right now Fedor is the greatest HWs of all time and definitely the hands down number 1 HW from 2000-2009, but its just a whole new breed now.

M1 claims hes had the best opponents, and I will agree at the time Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski is the best he probably could have fought (and that says a lot about the HW division just 2 years ago) but Brett Rogers? Give me a break, totally unproven. M1 can no longer provide the best opponenets.

In just the last year the HW division has changed so much, and I can't see Fedor going to the UFC, it'll never work since I doubt he'll leave M1.

Fedor is just a different kind of fighter. He fights for the hell of it and hes been dominent his entire career. He just trusts M1 to get him the best, but unfortunately thats simply not the case anymore.

onewayTiket on Apr 23, 2010 at 12:54 pm ET
IMO Brett is 10 X better then Tim.....and we also saw what he did to Andrey so.....dont hate man!

coreymb on Apr 23, 2010 at 1:07 pm ET
Yeah I think Brett is much better than Timmy as well. Not sure if he is going to be able to prove that against Overeem but if Rogers keeps working on his wrestling game he is capable of being a very dangerous guy.

The heavyweight division has changed a lot(as everyone says) but then when you actually look at it, there are just 4 new key ufc guys-brock,carwin,cain,jds. Those guys are all beasts in their own right but sometimes people act as-if the heavyweight divisioin is just completely packed with big time stars like the lhw division. The HW division is tons better but has a way to go yet.

I'd like to see Rogers in the UFC after another 2-3 fights. That guy hits damn hard!

onewayTiket on Apr 23, 2010 at 1:34 pm ET
IMO if SF gives Rogers away they will be dumb...he is one of their better fighters

coreymb on Apr 23, 2010 at 1:43 pm ET
Oh I agree.

They should keep him at all costs. I'd just love to see him against some UFC guys. I honestly think in 2-3 fights he'd give a lot of the HW's tough fights.

onewayTiket on Apr 23, 2010 at 1:53 pm ET
+1, i dont understand all the hate this card is getting.....seems like today's MMA/UFC  fans are freaking out of their minds....very nice card IMO!

09_gheussker on Apr 23, 2010 at 1:56 pm ET
you guys missed my point. Yea right now Brett is better than Timmy, thats obvious, I'm saying at the time it was the best matchup. Tim was coming off a loss from Big Nog but he was still considered a top three HW.

coreymb on Apr 23, 2010 at 2:00 pm ET
I gotcha on that. I'm just saying even though Rogers didn't have the credentials in terms of rankings I think he is a better fighter.

And just for my opinion on this one, I think if Rogers fought Timmy instead of Fedor..I believe Rogers would of worked Timmy as well.

09_gheussker on Apr 23, 2010 at 2:52 pm ET
I don't know, at the time Brett may still have been too young in his career. I agree that I want to see him in the UFC though, I think if he keeps working his game he can make things interesting. I'd love to see him fight JDS.

coreymb on Apr 23, 2010 at 6:33 pm ET
Yeah maybe. Rogers may have been a little too inexperienced for Sylvia and fall into the jab game at the time. Stlll would be intesting though-he was a huge power puncher back then..now he has on a decent muay thai game and stronger wrestling base.

His camp actually isn't all that bad either.

JDS would be interested. I question if Rogers would be fast enough to keep up with Junior. On the flip-side I'd like to see Junior and see if he can hang with someone with the size and power of Rogers.(He did against Gabe but I don't know what to think about that match)

im4u2nv on Apr 23, 2010 at 9:07 pm ET
ive been a big rogers fan for awhile the guy has some sick natural ability.it wouldnt surprise me if rogers pulled a win out.the HW division is stacked now it was the weakest and now it has 5 guys in the ufc that could be the number one in the world.Brock,Carwin,Cain,JDS,and I believe Roy Nelson is legit i would like to see him fight a top 10 guy.

GuitarGod on Apr 24, 2010 at 12:20 am ET
yeah but those 5 ufc guys are NOT#1 in the world,,,,sorry

coreymb on Apr 23, 2010 at 10:43 am ET
People were complaining that Overeem hasn't defended his belt in forever..well atleast now he finally is. It's not the opponent we'd like but atleast the champion is fighting and giving an opponent the oppertunity to win it.

It'll be a good fight and if Rogers does pull off an upset then things do get a little weird but what are you going to do? Move on, atleast Strikeforce can hype Rogers up as the guy to really rock Fedor for the first time in a very, very long time. :/

As for Fedor, the longer and longer this holds(m1-sf) out I'm not sure when he'll fight in the states again. Dosn't appear he will be fighting anytime soon. I wouldn't be surprised to see him fight Barnett or Overeem over in dream. Maybe even fight Barnett first and then Overeem on a NYE's show.

Delocated on Apr 23, 2010 at 10:53 am ET
Agreed. Corey, off MMA, what's your take on the Edwin Valero situation?

That was some seriously f*cked up $hit. Guy always had the look of a psycho but damn.

Pretty exciting fighter too. Shame.

coreymb on Apr 23, 2010 at 11:01 am ET
Yeah it's crazy.

Ya know, ever since he failed that MRI and couldn't fight in the states again he seemed to go off track a bit..(even though he was still fighting)

Once he got charged with 2 assaults in the span of what 2 years..and one of them against his wife you knew something wasn't right with him. I didn't expect him to kill his wife and then himself but then again, I guess I'm not that surprised either.

I would rather see jacare fight tim kennedy or rockhold.

coreymb on Apr 23, 2010 at 10:46 am ET
All three of those guys are serious talent in the same division. Wouldn't be the smartest match-making with a small talent pool..if it was UFC it'd be beautiful!

In due time we might see something like that. I'd imagine Jacare will get a shot at the belt with or without Shields in SF before fighting either of thsoe guys.

Kennedy is rumored to be fighting soon tho. He wanted to fight in Jan or Feb but SF didn't have a matchup for him atm then was unavailable after that due to his reserves duty or something like that..he just had an interview saying he would be fighting soon.

grapple420 on Apr 23, 2010 at 10:57 am ET
But they threw Jacare in with Villasenor who, from what Ive seen, isnt the greatest ground fighter.

What does that say about SF and Joey?  He's on a 4 fight win streak, why are they throwing him to Jacare like this?

Seems to me that SF isnt too loyal to those who helped build them to where they are today.  Shields, Joey, etc.

coreymb on Apr 23, 2010 at 11:09 am ET
Joey may be on a 4 fight win streak but he's 2-1 with Strikeforce and his last fight was on a challengers card. Where Jacare is the future of the MW division in SF considering he will probably stick around for quite awhile considering he has a good relationship with Dream. May lose Joey as a fighter but it gives Jacare more experience and make him more known in the states! With his new and improved striking(thanks A. Silva!) and amazing ground game he's going to be one of their biggest stars I think.

Shields-I'm with you. They don't seem loyal at all but I'm guessing they don't care about him all that much. Look at all the commercials with just Hendo.. He's not a ratings success at all for them. Talented as hell but SF needs guys that are going to pull in numbers...one of the major disadvantages of not having a huge roster/fanbase for SF.

grapple420 on Apr 23, 2010 at 11:26 am ET
Thats whay Im saying, they hyped the sh*t out of Hendo and did nothing for Shields, and that ended up backfiring big time.  I just dont get how you can just take a dump on one of the best fighters they have.  Oh well, I guess Coker wont miss him when he hightails it to the UFC.

As far as Joey, I forgot that he was fighting in EliteXC as well.  I thought that he had won 4 straight in SF, so its not really the same as Shields at all really.

coreymb on Apr 23, 2010 at 1:00 pm ET
And rightfully so.

Shields belong in UFC, not because he's a natural WW(he's shown to be able to compete at MW very easily) but it just straight up appears that Strikeforce dosn't care for him. If he was a ratings draw it would be different-2 cbs shows now and he tanked in the ratings both times. SF can't afford that-UFC can with their overall stacked cards.(thanks to their nice roster!)

Rogers was suppose to fight way back...even befor SF got Fedor....also the casuals dont know Ubereem yet...so its a good test for him....also if they fought without the title on the line it would have been worse.....what if Roger won? Would rather see Jacare vs Lawler, why are they doing this fight and then Lawler vs MIller?  Why not Lawler vs Jacare?  Could it be that since Jake could leave, and the MW title will be vacant, that Lawler and Jacare could fight for the vacant MW title latter on?

If you paid attention, you would know that Strikeforce has been trying to make Jacare vs Lawler but Robbie keeps turning it down.

Do you blame Robbie?!

I'm a big fan of both but with Jacare's improved striking and dynamite ground game, I'd wanna stay away from him for as long as possible!! :)

woww i have no kept up with randleman but WTF happened to him?!?! he used to be a force back in pride. i just looked at his record and hes 3-7 in his last 10 fights.........

does SF take this into consideration before puttin him on the main card or it doesnt matter as long as they have some sort of name recognition?!

After the Whitehead snugfest, I was really hoping he'd be an under from now on.  I'd much rather see Kid vs Lopez on the main card if/when that match is announced.

Villasenor vs Souza could be good and we finally get to see Beerbohm fight. The rest are all spectacle fights more than matchups. I'll be down front at Shine III that night supporting Nick "the goat" Thompson so I'll maybe watch this spectacle card later ondemand depending on the outcomes.

best card of the year so far without a doubt.

Givener on Apr 23, 2010 at 12:29 pm ET
I hope you mean for Strikeforce...

Givener on Apr 23, 2010 at 12:27 pm ET
Randleman's a bum. Overeem is going to drop Brett Rodgers. I hope Arlovski beats that pos roider Antonio Silva.

I don't mind Strikeforce but I'll be a happy man if these bums lose their fights.

This card is looking great!!!!! I just hope Roger Gracie doesn't fight like Rolles!!!

rush16 on Apr 23, 2010 at 12:51 pm ET
Should be a much better card then the last one. Arloski should be able to pick apart Bigfoot, he's probably 10Xs faster then the guy. And I think Overeem is gonna destroy Rogers.

Awesome card!!! I can't wait to see how Gracie and Souza submit their opponents. Roger is probably the the best in the world right now at BJJ, and Souza Souza is excellent also.

whats going on i thought fedor had the belt is he injured?

Tommyknocker on Apr 23, 2010 at 8:49 pm ET
No , just a giant " what if " He'll never get the recognition he just may deserve and he can thank M1 Global for that . Overeem's the strikeforce champ but he never defends his belt .

lol the best thing about kevin randleman  is when he looses he always argues and is ready to hit the reffs ;[

GuitarGod on Apr 24, 2010 at 12:31 am ET
i would personally pay the $10 for a month of showtime just to watch overeem vs rodgers alone. Especially compared to $45 to watch little half grown men fight on wec ppv anyone else with me on this one?
