One Tree Hill: Does No News Mean Bad News?

Posted on 29 April 2010 by Bill Gorman

Should the fact that One Tree Hill is the CW’s only “veteran” show not yet renewed worry fans?

What, Me Worry?

  • One Tree Hill’s ratings are solidly in the middle of the CW pack, and networks rarely cancel their “average” shows.
  • Except for Vampire Diaries, the ratings track record for new CW shows in the last several years can charitably be described as “poor”.

Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid…

  • The CW renewed most of its existing line up in mid-February. And renewed Smallville in early March. That leaves only freshman Life Unexpected and One Tree Hill in limbo. Life Unexpected’s situation makes sense, its ratings are below where I would be confident of renewal, but not certain of its cancellation. The One Tree Hill silence cannot be explained by marginal ratings.
  • Shows entering their eighth season (like OTH) are highly unlikely to grow their ratings.
  • Shows entering their eighth season (like OTH) are likely to be more expensive to produce than similar new shows simply because of cost escalation over time.
  • Canceling One Tree Hill allows the CW to premiere three new shows next fall instead of just two. Assuming they don’t schedule originals at 9pm Friday, which I doubt they will.
  • One Tree Hill isn’t a Dawn Ostroff product, it predates the creation of the CW itself. No sentimentality renewal bonus.

Could OTH’s fate be tied to the CW’s pilot season outcomes? Perhaps.

Could OTH’s fate already be decided and we’ll just find out on May 20 that it’s not in the CW fall schedule. Perhaps.

Fans wanting to get a jump on the inevitable frenzy if the show’s canceled should note that SaveOneTreeHill.com is available. ;)

    there is no way they should cancell OTH. it has good story lines and they relate topeoples normal lives.

    According to Variety the CW will pick up a maximum of three new shows for next season (including midseason) those shows are Nikita, Betwixt and Hellcats

    Here's what i think will happen (and kinda want to happen):

    Monday:
    * LUX
    * NEW SHOW

    Tuesday:

    * NEW SHOW
    * 90210

    Wed:
    * ANTM
    * Gossip Girl

    Thursday:
    * Vampire Diaries
    * NEW SHOW

    Friday:
    * Smallville
    * Supernatural

    Mid season: OTH / NEW SHOW

    That'd make 3 new shows + 1 mid season + another show mid season since one of their new show will fail miserably.

    I need a s8, i need a proper ending, i need a married & with child Brooke Davis.

    I need the CW to respect us for sticking around seven years.
  • krisp8888
    wouldnt i?? A show that has run SUCESSFULLY for 7 seasons??
  • krisp8888
    How can they? It is doing better than most. Doing much better than LUX. And a new show like LUX will likely drop for season 2. Most mediocre newcomers do. While OTH is likely to sustain their viewers. And the creator originally was planning to end it last year and the president of the CW did not want that and look at the outcome...They returned.
  • The CW's not going to schedule an original show for 9pm Fridays.

    The CW needs to give One Tree Hill a final season and a full season at that.. I know a lot of people who were upset when they followed gilmore girls for 7 seasons and the CW didn't give it fair warning that it was getting canceled! I think a full season of 22 episodes is what it deserves especially when its overall ratings for the season are higher than the renewed gossip girl and 90210! The CW should give one tree hill and life unexpected split full seasons! Here is my idea:

    Mondays pair wyoming project at 8 since this is a palladino project it would probably pair with Life Unexpected good and might bring in new viewers.. Let Life Unexpected air 22 episodes from Sep to early January. Then in Mid late January continue Wyoming Project at 8 and bring back One Tree Hill at 9 airing all new 22 episodes from January up until May.. I think One Tree Hill would be better to bring back at midseason due to the loyalty of viewers and the fact that season 5 survived when brought back at midseason during the 2007-2008 tv season! Life Unexpected should be brought back in September so the fanbase is more current and the show itself not forgotten about!

    Tuesdays gossip girl as the lead in at 8 with 90210 following at 9

    Wed ANTM at 8 pairing it with Betwixt at 9

    Thurs Vampire Diaries at 8 with Nikita at 9

    Fridays Smallville at 8 and Supernatural at 9

    Let me know what you guys think.. Also I wouldn't doubt if 90210 starts pulling in melrose place numbers next season it will probably be canceled as well as gossip girl!!! Seriously let me know what you think about this idea have a good day everybody

    Well reality shows have been known to do casting before they are told if they are are aren't renewed (see TAR which has done it many, many times over the last decade). SO I don't know if I would count casting as a renewal.

    But we also can't really accurately judge the intentions of the CW without knowing what their plan is. Are they trying for the first time actually provide originals during the breaks. Is it part of their plan to program original content during the summer, ect. If they do either of those it will have to be extremely cheaply (something known of the scripted fare on the CW would be able to manage). And HS is no Survivor or TAR which is actually expensive by reality show standards, probably fairly close to what the CW spends on its scripted fare.

    I think the worrisome part is that the CW, in it's promos are calling it "The Final 4 Episodes". Now, it could be of the season, but it's not a great sign.
  • i think both OTH and LUX will be renewed. when you look at the amount of dead weight on the CW schedule- Melrose, Fly Girls, High Society- and then the fact that they are running double ANTM in prime time (a show that doesn't bring in the ratings it used to) then they simply can't afford to lose the safe bets of LUX and OTH. total viewer wise, LUX held it's own just not in demo and OTH's ratings are neither good or bad and that's enough to keep a show on the CW. the fact that they shed the big names- burton and CMM, their costs arent as high as something like a smallville with the OG cast intact.
  • DonJ1973
    Creatively I think the show has just enough left for a 13 episode final season.

    Sophia Bush is indeed filming a pilot in case OTH ends after this season, but will go back to it if it does get picked up.

    I also believe all the actors contracts are up after this season so The CW and WB will need to re-sign everyone.

    what if the CW cancels Melrose Place, LUX and OTH

    i'd like to see their schedule like:
    Monday - teen drama night
    Gossip Girl
    90210

    Tuesday - new spy night
    Nikita
    Nomads

    Wednesday - reality night
    Americans Next Top Model
    High Society and new realities

    Thursday -
    Vampire Diaries
    Betwixt

    Friday
    Smallville
    Supernatural

    Midseason Hellcats
  • Melaniedesi
    I think its going to depend on how the CW feels about their pilots as to whether OTH (and/or LUX)gets a pick up. I think OTH might get a 13 episode pick up either way so they have something for midseason, but I won't be surprised if they let it go in order to launch new shows despite its decent (for the CW) ratings.
  • nerwen_aldarion
    I was never certain of OTH's renewal so this doesn't surprise me. They might renew LUX because it is cheaper then other shows, newer and has some good reviews. OTH's fate is the same way in my book, has better ratings but is older, more expensive with less "good word of mouth"

    I guess we will find out next month
  • me05
    Don't watch any CW show besides Smallville and the occasional episode of Supernatural, but I agree with what someone said above. Both will get a shortened order pickup for 13 episodes maybe more (up to 18) for LUX if it airs in spring and has better ratings.
  • MgrX
    Do a half-season each of OTH and LUX. Then let ONE leave and give LUX another shot.
  • Joy
    yes it's true High Society was picked up and my mind is still trying to figure that one out. I'd rather them get rid of HS and Fly Girls and pick up both LUX and OTH (even though I've never seen an epi of OTH in my life)....but I think the facts about OTH stated above are true. And I think the actors themselves are showing signs of being ready to move on to other projects. Despite ratings I have more faith in LUX getting a pick up over OTH. There is a lot of people for LUX not just fans but the media and critics too. OTH has it's fanbase but other then that it will not grow an audience.
  • Krista, unless the NY Post is just plain out wrong, you seem to be quite on base!
  • bill i don't know how reliable this is but supposedly they are "casting" for new people to appear on the show http://www.nypost.com/p/pagesix/needs_new_pals_.... i could be completely off base here
  • I think the first 6 seasons of one tree hill were great.This season it's not so great as it use to be,but even so,i think it's better than any other show of CW for far.Looking how poor are the shows like gossip girl and 90210,i don't understand how could this network not give another chance for another season,to finish this show,how they deserve.
  • Krista, are you under the impression that High Society has been renewed? That would be news to me.

    Put a link in a comment if you can.
  • also how could the CW possibly renew "High Society"?? it gets less than a million viewers per week!! Dawn will be making a BIG mistake if she cancels this show and let that one stay
  • that's what I'm thinking too. i just don't have a good feeling about it anymore. if this show DOES get canceled I don't think it will be canceled for ratings. we need at least 13 more episodes to give it a proper send off
  • Emily N.
    What makes sense to me is giving OTH a 10-13 episode final season along with a shortened season pickup of Life Unexpected and a 13 episode run of a new show. This would allow them to give proper closure to OTH, give Life Unexpected a second chance at higher ratings and give the CW a chance to debut 3 new shows in total.
  • Perhaps fan campaigns had not reached the level of domain name grabbing at that point.

    Or it could have been registered and then the registration left to expire.
  • Julia
    I can't believe SaveOneTreeHill.com is still available! Surely they had a campaign back when WB was changing to CW. I recall there was a lot of "SAVE OTH!!!!" going around back then.
  • joshemerson
    Yeah that'd be pretty crappy of the network to cancel the show without giving them time for a proper finale. I haven't watched OTH regularly in a couple years, but I'd probably tune in for a final run of episodes.
  • chef91
    CW has to be kidding themselves if they cancel OTH

    creatively.. a 7 season show where we've seriously seen the characters from middle of high school to adulthood and has had some incredible episodes of television is going to end just like that? i always thought of OTH ending with a 2-hour series finale and reunions with lucas and peyton back and happy times for everyone!

    ratings.. came back from this looong break (that hurt all their other shows) to still above 2+ million viewers and a 2.1 in women 18-34. no way they can pick 90210 and LUX over it.

    even a 13-episode mid-season order would be fine with me. JUST GIVE ME SOMETHING CW!

    oh and Sophia Bush is filming an ABC pilot as the main character
  • TimFan
    I havent been a big fan of the show since season 4 but saying that i would like 1 more season just to finsh the show. How can the CW cancel it when its doing better than most of its shows?
  • EdwinNL
    I'm a big fan of OTH, but when I read this story, I think it's over. The CW will cancel the show in a few weeks, unfortunately.
  • FairviewU
    Bill, oh no! You don't what you've started. lol
