Oakland University junior center Keith Benson is planning to enter the NBA draft.
“He’s submitted his letter to put himself in the draft and he has not hired an agent,” Oakland coach Greg Kampe said tonight. “I’m really happy for Kito because it’s been a lifelong dream for him. He’s put himself in position where his dream can become a reality.”
Benson, who attended Birmingham Detroit Country Day, was not projected by many of the mock websites to come out this year but is listed by nbadraft.net as a second-round pick in the 2011 draft.
Underclassmen have until May 8 to remove their name from the draft and still return to school if they desire. If they hire an agent, they cannot return.
The 6-foot-11, 225-pounder averaged 17.3 points per game, 10.5 rebounds and 3.3 blocks this season and was named the Summit League player of the year, leading Oakland to the Summit League regular season and tournament titles and a berth in the NCAA tournament.
He scored 28 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the NCAA tournament first-round loss to Pittsburgh.
