Ittihad claim sixth Libyan title on the trot

Tripoli-based Al Ittihad have wrapped up the 2009/2010 league title with three games remaining.
The feat, Ittihad’s sixth on the trot became a reality after a 2-0 win over struggling Al Najma last Tuesday, to go 11-points clear of closest contenders Khaleej Sirte, who lost 0-1 at Al Hilal.
Second half efforts from Muhammad Za’abia and Muhammad al Qounawi were enough to take Ittihad’s tally to 54 points, as against 43 points by Khaleej Sirte.
The Tripoli-based club also goes into the history books as the first and only club to have annexed the Libyan league title for six successive seasons (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009).
Ittihad will thus represent Libya in the Orange CAF Champions League next season.
Meanwhile, the battle for second spot is expected to go the wire with Khaleej Sirte, Ahly Benghazi, Al Nasser and Ahly Tripoli in contention.
The Libyan champions will face Primeiro de Agosto of Angola at the second 1/8th round of the Orange CAF Confederation Cup next July.
