Human Rights Watch writes to Zambia over homosexuals

As a gay couple in Malawi began serving a 14-year jail term for conducting an open relationship, another southern African country came under fire Friday over its treatment of gays.

New York-based rights watchdog Human Rights Watch warned that recent homophobic statements by religious leaders and government authorities in Zambia, Malawi’s neighbour to the west, was undermining that country’s fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic. In a letter to Zambian leaders dated May 17 and released to the media late Thursday, HRW called on the government of President Rupiah Banda to condemn statements that could discourage gay men from using healthcare facilities, including HIV testing, and “erode their fundamental human rights.”The letter also called on Zambian lawmakers to decriminalize consenting homosexual conduct.Homosexual acts are banned in Zambia, as is the case in Malawi and a number of other African countries. On Thursday, a gay couple in Malawi received the maximum sentence of 14 years imprisonment with hard labour after being found guilty of engaging in acts “against the order of nature.”The case caused an international outcry and shone a light on the ongoing repression of gays across the continent. In Zambia, at least two religious leaders have recently criticized donor countries for speaking out in defense of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender population.HRW quoted Bishop J.H.K. Banda, chairman of the National AIDS Council, as describing the donors efforts as being “against the traditional values of the country.”Zambia’s Anglican Council presiding bishop Robert Mumbi also recently described homosexuality as un-African – an oft-repeated refrain.Elsewhere in the region, Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has said gays were “lower than dogs and pigs” and refused to include gay rights in discussions on a new constitution. And in the central African country of Uganda, a draft bill is before parliament that would increase penalties for homosexual acts to life in prison, or even the death penalty for some offenses.HRW fears that homophobic statements will compromise efforts to prevent the spread of the deadly HIV virus in the gay community. HIV is mainly contracted through unprotected sex.”Zambia has a strong track record on addressing HIV/AIDS,” Joseph Amon, Health and Human Rights director at Human Rights Watch said in the letter. “However, promoting intolerance and creating a climate of fear will only sabotage efforts to ensure access to HIV prevention and treatment by driving men underground,” he said.Zambia’s anti-gay law, which dates to the British colonial era, violated the country’s constitution, in that the charter guarantees the right to privacy and prohibits discrimination, HRW said. The same argument has been made by human rights groups in Malawi.

  1. Peter says:

Madonna, The EU, US and UN have condemned the irrational desision to jail the two love birds.
Madonna wrote, “I am shocked and saddened by the decision made today by the Malawian court, which sentenced two innocent men to prison. As a matter of principle, I believe in equal rights for all people, no matter what their gender, race, color, religion, or sexual orientation. Today, Malawi took a giant step backward. The world is filled with pain and suffering; therefore, we must support our basic human right to love and be loved. I call upon the progressive men and women of Malawi — and around the world — to challenge this decision in the name of human dignity and equal rights for all.”

ZAMBIA IS A CHRISTIAN NATION. HOMOSEXUALS HAVE NO ROOM IN ZAMBIA. PERIOD.

  3. Princess says:

Iwe Jacob Haangala stop painting a rosy picture about British Journalism and newspapers. Your dear RB and your types wouldnt survive being British Prime Minister for a month. Your type will simply go mad. Newspapers here are vicious. It makes the one independent newspaper (the Post)in Zambia look like a mere wrapping package for a Sunday school picnic. For the three years Brown was Prime Minister he was being hammered by the so called middle England newspapers like the Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph, Daily Express and the mass circulation Sun newspapers. The Sun and its sister paper the News of the World are also legendary in hacking into other people’s phones and text messaging services including those of the Royal family. In America I would advise you to go to the Website of the Washington Times, New York Post or Fox News Channel and see for yourself how Barack Obama is treated by these media. So badaala ba Haangala get exposed otherwise you will continue singing the praises of an environment that doesnt exist anyway in the world apart from your imagination!

  4. STRANGE BRAND OF ZAMBIAN JOURNALISM
Articles that are published in some Zambian newspapers are buffling. Shall we ever value our nationhood? The success of a mature democracy depends on being able to receive news and comments presented from a variety of social, economic and political perspectives. But if a diversity of views are suppressed, then any public information system becomes degraded to skewed propaganda machinery aimed at warshipping foreign cultures. Students of journalism are getting a raw deal through a strange brand of journalism that is taking root on the Zambian intellectual landscape. There is an ugly phenomenon where some section of the media thrives on persistently publishing sentiments of hatred. If reason and intellectual assessment of facts were to be accepted by a broad base of Zambian people, one wonders as to why a given newspaper in modern times would choose to deflect the truth and prop up a pool of misleading reporting. Given a trillion of events, encompassing education, economics, developmental programmes, and numerous constraints that afflict goals to national prosperity, it is strange that a section of the so-called free press tends to bombard its readership with stories based on an disgracing one individual and opting to nurture a potential tyrant. The Departments of Journalism at Evelyn Hone College, the Universities and other institutions of mass communication have an up-hill battle of restoring the credibility of journalism. There is a need to generate curricula with themes on balanced principles of journalism.
In Britain high standards of journalism have been reflected and sustained through fair reporting of authentic facts. Even in the situation that some newspapers are owned by people with vested interests to buttress their business empires, the standard of reporting in UK tends to adhere to pertinent principles of journalism that respect the integrity of individual citizens. The 1977 Appendix A of the Royal Commission on the Press in UK reveals ownership of some newspapers as follows: The Daily Express, SundayMail, and the New Standard are owned by Trafalgar House Investments known to have vested interests in shipping, property and cement industry; The Daily Mail is owned by Daily Mail & General Trust Ltd.; The Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph are properties of a private company owned by a Conservative Member of the House of Lord. Other notable privately owned UK newspapers include the Observer, The Guardian and The Financial Times. It is clear that in Britain multinational companies or wealthy families own all mass circulation newspapers that they used to campaign in defense of their commercial interests and propagate their preferred political policies. Some of these British media are open supporters of the major political parties, but their standard of journalism are admirably truly professional. Hence it can be postulated that the nature of curricula UK institutions of journalism have developed and sustained are of high standards with due respect for human rights concerns. During the recent past (1950-60s) Northern Rhodesia and later Zambia witnessed high standards of journalism. The Argus Company owned Northern News which later became Times of Zambia then edited by Richard Hall who trained many Zambian reporters to succeed him. The Central African Examiner was white owned liberal print media that generated credible informative news. The African Life and Central African Mail was black-owned but reflected fair play in standards of reporting to an extent of embracing the welfare of all the races and inherent tribes in this country. These earlier newspapers established civilized journalism and reflected sanity into the discipline of mass communication.
The pioneer newspapers provided vital information linked to the aspirations of the majority of people. Hence, Zambians embraced their nationalist politicians with flavor and love. Dingiswayo Banda, Fines Bulawayo, Mainza Chona, Solomon Kalulu, R. Kamanga, S. Kapwepwe, KK, Mbikusita Lewanika, Mungoni Liso, Daniel Munkombwe, Harry Nkumbula, Alex Shapi, Munukayumbwa Sipalo, Arthur Wina, Sikota Wina, to mention a few eminent sons of this nation, preached noble messages of unifying all tribes into a single viable nation. The tribal-cousinship imparts practical positive meaning to most ordinary Zambians in urban areas. The Lozis are readily at hand to assist the Tongas in hard times of grief; the same goes for the Bemba who have cultivated strong friendly relationships with their Ngoni tribal cousins. But some private media is actively eroding this unifying culture. The unleashing of sustained attacks on RB are, in effect, silently infuriating the majority of people in Eastern Province to a point of antagonizing the Bembas and Ngonis. An insult to RB means demeaning the people of Eastern Province. Many Ngonis are gradually opting to buy newspapers that reflect balanced reporting. This trend of sensational reporting is a recipe for sowing seeds of hatred between the two great peoples. The news media that is currently bent on preaching hatred is merely digging its own grave. This section of print media campaigned for the removal of KK, later worked to discredit Chiluba, disparaged the Late Mwanawasa and now focused on insulting a humble RB. The health of the late President Mwanawasa was a subject of mockery; a respectable marital status of the current President has been ridiculed by a consortium of a major Church and a sector of a private print-media – propagated under the veil of the free-press. Apparently, a particular leader that this media may seem to support knows this trend well. If such a leader were to become President, the first line of action will be to pronounce a Presidential decree to ban the very medium that supported him/her. Instead, the phenomenon of “sunka mulamu” displayed by some politician and some clergy is being glorified prominently. The publication of insults has become the culture tailored for a captive audience/readership. This sector of the media is exploiting the probable belief that the people of Africa, particularly ordinary Christians, are prone to take as gospel-truth any view which is printed in newspapers – in the same way as they accept the printed word in the Bible as truth without question. It will not help to take the take the ostritch’s posture of burying the head in sand! Journalism is a noble profession. We should thus strive to uplift and uphold first class concepts of mass communication so as to inspire pride in our budding journalists. The mega (big) question is: who owns some private news media that is bent on degrading the good attributes of the press, and for whose interest does this print media really serve?

  5. African says:

For those who are blaming Africa for having high AIDS infection rates, please read “WHO murdered Africa” and also read the “Tuskeegee experiment” on the internet.

  6. Proudly Gay says:

    BP,
Being unreasonable and being cheap with your mind won’t help you nor anyone. Gays are there and whether you like it or not, homosexuality is a reality and bigger than your naivety. I hope you will be there forever so that you witness how reasonable generations will accept homosexuality. But you don’t have to wait that long because there are civilised minds in Zambia and outside who are not redundant like you and have accepted reality. And I hope to see what kind of a god is so intolerant to view people he has created with a different sexual orientation as evil. If that is a god you have created in your mind, I’ll be glad to congratulate your warped imaginations!

  7. zedian says:

    dear caucasians,

please leave our africa with its traditions and culture. we do not want pervesion in zambia.

Zambians lets fight this, it surely is evil not even animals do crave for their same sex friends.

  8. hp says:

We don’t want Gays in Zambia. And No law will allow that for the coming billions years to come.Never, Never, those stipud acts to be done in Zambia. Please my fellow Zambian lets not allow Gays. I would rather die protesting for this issue. Look Now am getting angry. God is not stupid to create a man and a woman. How can with all your minds lick someone’s ass? Fuck u Gays.Even animals they don’t do that. It will never be allowed in Zambia no matter what even if I die to day my soul will still be fighting for this. period. ZWD please remove that picture its inhuman.

  9. Mako says:

    Eish

Don’t try going that way! Which science? That is an excuse to justify wrong. Mtafu has finally broken. I doubt if we have the same understanding with he who an embecile is. Surely Mtafu needs help. What he can’t accept is that licking other men’s feaces is abnormal!

Now Eish, what is scientific to understand about that?

    As

  10. Eish! says:

Have read all the comments here, whilst some people here have valid reasonings behinds their opinions, most have not.
Science has proved that being homosexual is genetic – like being born with a black skin, or being born albino, or being born male or female.
Homosexuals are born that way. Straight people are born that way.
And supringsly enough, it has also been proved that people who are homophobic in the extreme, actually have a deep seated desire/want to be bi-curious.
So, for all those people here, think about that.

  11. Zedian says:

    Mako
you are an imbecile. I rest my case because I’m arguing with a fool who can’t reason properly.

  12. Mako says:

    Mtafu,

If a society found out that you enjoy licking other men’s feaces in private are they not right to interven and rescue you from such a pervasity? If two consulting adults lack the shame for licking each others feaces certainly the society is right in reminding them and attempt to stop thier misdeeds though those deeds may not immediately appear harmful to the external of their privacy.

A society has a collective responsibillity to maintain civilty to the extent that it chides the harmful private practices of perverts. How many murders are commited in private? How many rapes are committed in private? How many people abuse drugs in privacy? None of them could use privacy to justify thier pervert acts. No court would intertain such an excuse. And so no normal society should entertain those who lick feaces in privacy.

  13. Mako says:

    Mtafu

As educated and clever as you claim to be why do you mistake an anus for a vagina?

  14. Mako says:

You say ‘what is wrong with two consenting Adults engaging in sodomy in private which you suppose is unharmful. There is everything wrong! Is it harmless for two consenting Adults to have a habit of licking each others feaces though in privacy? Of course there is. It is certainly abnormal! Just because they find nothing wrong to do so does not necessarily mean that is ok. The picture above tells it all. A normal human being will find that picture disgusting and it all started in privacy. They because of thier lusts want to force people to accept their abnormal acts as normal.

Eating feaces in private is just disgusting as eating them public! So the society must stop those who prefer eating feaces in private so as to show them that it is not normal.

  15. umb says:

Ba mtafu- What education do you have. Let me tell you am a educated and I hold a masters degree, but I will tell you that Homosexuality is socially constructed and is pervasive to the natural norms. Like I said all natural things have a natural purpose.Sex is between a man and a woman for procreation which is a natural process.Tell what is the purpose of sex between man & Man or woman and woman? This things are just socially constructed to suit the iniquit of man. Like marko said man is so depraved, that he/she can not see that iniquity- My prayer is that God, by whose grace we all get saved out of his willingness and that not by man, may open your heart, and the hearts of many others that share in that state of inquity, that you can start feeling and appreciating the beuaty of what God ordained(sex should be between man and woman and that in marriage) May God bring light into your life, because only then will you stat seeing. For now my brother you are blind, you are not seeing.

  16. Mako says:

    Mtafu

intolerance and hatred to you but what you refuse is to acknowledge that homosexuality is a perversion of nature. What is abnormal you want people to treat as normal. Ok we are dull and you are clever and advanced. But does it take education to know that sex is meanrt between a female and a man, does one need to be educated to know what nature clearly spells?

  17. umb says:

    Is homosexuality a social construction?
Various theories of homosexuality are derived from either an essentialist approach or a social constructionist approach. Essentialism claims that homosexuality is a construct that is both ahistorical and acultural, a part of human civilization for all time; whereas constructionialsm suggests homosexuality is defined more by temporal periods and cultural context.” (Sullivan, Homophobia, History, and Homosexuality: Trends for Sexual Minorities, p.3 in Sexual Minorities: Discrimination, Challenges, and Development in American, Michael K. Sullivan, PhD, editor

Out of all the issues in the essentialist/social constructionist debate, whether or not same gender or bisexual sexual orientation is a choice is probably the sole interest of many individuals and groups. It is one of the most fiercely debated issues among scholars, scientists, and the lay public. It is also debated by some members of gay, lesbian, and bisexual communities. Essentialists assume that no sexual orientation, whether same-gender, bisexual, or heterosexual, is a conscious choice (Gonsiorek & Weinrich, 1991; Herdt, 1990) Instead, a “fixed, independent biological mechanism steers individual desire or behavior either toward men or toward women irrespective of circumstances and experience” (De Cecco & Elia. 1993, p.11). In distinct contrast to this view is the claim that one’s sexual orientation is chosen or constructed. This is one of the most basic tenets of social constructionism (Golden, 1987; Hart & Richardson, 1981; Longino, 1988; Vance, 1988; Weeks, 1991; Weinberg & Willliams, 1974). Instead of sexual orientation, the phrase sexual preference is often used by social constructionists to indicate that people take an active part in constructing their sexuality (Weinberg, Williams, & Pryor, 1994) or make a conscious, intentional choice of sexual partners (Baumrind, 1995).”

“Essentialist approaches to research on sexual orientation-whether they be evolutionary approaches or approaches that rely on hormones, genetics, or brain factors-rest on assumptions that (a) there are underlying true essences (homosexuality and heterosexuality), (b) there is discontinuity between forms (homosexuality and heterosexuality are two distinct, separate categories, rather than points on a continuum), and (c) there is constancy of these true essences over time and across cultures (homosexuality and heterosexuality have the same form today in American culture as they have had for centuries and as they have had in other cultures today).” (Delamater & Shibley Hyde. “Essentialism vs Social Constructionism in the Study of Human Sexuality.” p.16)

These are debates but nature does not do anything without a purpose? What is then the purpose of a male -female realtionship- itis that there may be procreation which itself is natural. This there fore means that is that homosexuality is not a natural but a social category because it has no natural purpose but a socially constructed modernism. To this end therefore I call upon OUR AFRICAN LEADERS TO EMULATE MALAWI and DEFEND NATURE BECAUSE WE AFRICANS ARE NOT APART OF NATURE BAUT WE A PART OF NATURE AND WE CHOOSE TO LIVE IN HARMONY WITH NATURE

  18. Mtafu says:

So it is the same in Zambia and Malawi as it is in the Southern United States: the illiterates, the uneducated, the unsuccessful in life, the bitter and unhappy, are those who claim to represent the word of God, and the same ones who preach hatred and intolerance. Just look at the spelling and the flawed reasoning in this discussion, and see for yourselves: it is the homophobic ones who are ill-educated. Do you really think there aren’t already enough babies, and you must worry yourselves that gay men are not procreating? Do you really think that God condones hatred against men who love one another in the privacy of their own homes? Do you really think that the best way to fight AIDS is to force gay men to have sex in secret and go home to their wives, passing HIV onward in the process? Let these people do as they wish. Let them live happily with each other. You’ll see: they will cause you no grief. If homosexuality is as repugnant as you say it is, then there will never be very many who decide to take up this behaviour, even if it is out in the open.

  19. African says:

sorry meant for those blaming Africa.

  20. African says:

F9r those who are blaming Africa for having high AIDS infection rates, please read “WHO murdered Africa” on the internet.

  21. Mako says:

The careless sinner is too callous to hate his sin. The sinner when finally commuted to hell will agree that he deserves to be there alas for all eternity.

  22. Mako says:

    Zedian

I urge by the mercies of God, turn and Repent, Jesus died for you, even this day you can be saved, just acknowledge your sin and that you have greatly offended God, he can save you. Do not wait for tommorow !!!!!!!!!!

  23. Mako says:

Men are not free as they suppose they are. You are either a slave to sin or a slave to God. Certainly homos are slaves to sin, they live in difiance against nature and everything of true religion.

It is better to be ashamed of homosexuality than to be proud of it. There is nothing to be proud of pervasion, doing so will land you in trouble in the courts of God. REPENT

  24. Mako says:

    Zedian

God by nature and his word says homosexuality is a pervasion! The reason you refuse to accept this is because what matters to you is what is good to you. You are your own god in your imaginations! But whether you like it or not you are a defiant sinner unawares that God’s wrath hangs over you. Either in this life or the next you will one day bow your knee to this God that you willfully reject making yourself a ‘god’. Repent before it is too late.

  25. Mako says:

When God gives up a sinner to his lusts the sinner reduces himself to a level below an animal! That is why a male dog will never ever mount a fellow male dog unless perhaps a perverted man instigates such an act.

When homos justify their warped lusts they close themselves from overco
    ing this evil.

  26. Zedian says:

Mako, who then decides if homosexuality is a ‘perversion’? You talk of a man ‘lusting’ after another man. What if the two ‘lust’ after each other? Who determines that ‘perversion’ since it would still be homosexuality? I want to know WHO.

  27. Mako says:

    Zedian

Without the knowledge of sin man will not acknowledge that he is a sinner: the law came that you might know that you have erred against GOD! To suppose that you can justify your lusts is simply to defy nature and GOD! God did not create pervasion, it is the pervert who by his actions defys God’s laws which are printed in nature. A man for a woman, not a man for a man! This is simple only if you repent not in your defiance!

  28. Mako says:

    Zedian

when a man desires another man the way a man should desire a woman, that is a pervasion. Procreation is by man and woman, not man and man or woman by woman nature is very clear about that.

When men lust after each other it is against nature, it is a pervasion of nature.

  29. Princess says:

Dear caucasian Brothers we cannot accept your degree of tolerance. As Africans our lives are short and brutish. We are the only continent with a life expectance that is in the low and mid 40’s. While Asian, Americans and Europeans can live upwards from 60’s to the 90’s. We are more concerned with wedge issues like this homosexual stuff. It really riles us when it is mentioned. The reason is because we are Christians by culture. I know you may say we have high rates of AIDS due to fornication, adultery, incest and paedophilia. But honestly these things are not as worse as what two adults of the same sex do in their privacy. What we have come to realise is that homosexuality can lead to a lot of vices if it is permitted in our countries. It may lead to the doubling of corruption, increased rigging of elections, mufumbwe type violence and starvation surpassing the levels of the 1985 Ethiopian famine.

  30. Mako says:

I doubt if advancement means to call good bad and bad good. Homosexuality in a normal society stirs up genuine anger. But this anger must be a Godly anger! Grace has come that the sinner must be saved even the homosexual. Therefore ye gay man repent! Ye lesbian repent for the grace of God is still near.

Today if you hear his voice do not harden your heart! REPENT I SAY REPENT!

  31. Zedian says:

    Mako
What are the characteristics of a pervesion? How do you judge a pervesion? Did your God create pervesions? You seem to be using this word so much. Please, let me know how you define a pervesion.

  32. Maria says:

I have been to many funerals in Zambia where the dead person has died from AIDS. Nobody at the funeral house mentions the disease by name. It will be cancer(a more dangerous disease), pneumonia etc. We are used to being in denial! As a result small and solvable problems can not be solved because we are too conservative and prefer to talk behind people’s backs. Everything we say must be politically correct!
Gay people are not a danger to our community. They just need to be left alone to do their thing as long as they do not interfere with other peoples freedoms. It is that simple.
Our leaders have even started to use the gay card to attack political opponents! They will label an opponent gay, satanist, mason etc to score political points. In the meantime real problems facing the country are not being solved.
Let individuals solve their own spiritual lives and lifestyles. Gay issues are between an individual and his god. Not for the vice president of the country to solve.
The only result of this attack on gays will be to push them deeper underground. It will solve nothing.
We need to be known around the world as a copper producing country and home to the victoria falls, variety of birds and beautiful friendly people. At this rate we are going to tarnish our image and there will be economic consequences.

  33. Mako says:

There is not a simple reason why a man should think it normal to marry another man. This is against nature, logic and everything good. Yes there are those men whose behaiviour is that of women but that does not mean that they should be married to fellow men NO! It is not normal for women to lust after fellow women!

  34. Mako says:

The pervert in advocating for his ‘right’ means to be allowed to freely what he feels is right. This is the very essence of sin. The sinner considers religion to be a hinderance to his enjoyments. The very heart of homosexuality is the peversion of God’s standard. When the homo desires to freely practice the lusts of his heart what he means is to free himself from the limitations of God’s law! He means to be God himself unconfined by the ceator by going against nature which is God’s foot print.

The peverts longing is to free himself from the restriction of religion. The pervert by his acts hopes to usurp God from his throne. ‘Who is this Lord that I should serve him’ the pervert says by his actions.

  35. Mako says:

When men justify wickedness, there is no limit as to what else they will do. As soon as homosexuality is accepted, more worse pervasions will follow. The more Christinity thrives the less this pevasion of homosexuality will be practised in any given Society.

Therefore the push for ‘rights’ movements spearheading the curtailing of religious freedoms across the west whilst promoting other ‘rights’. The biggest hinderence to their movement has become true Religion!

True religion is the conscious of a society. If true religion thrives pevasion is stifled. The less of true religion the greater the pervasions. Is no wonder the first adversary of the ‘rights’ movement is true Christianity? The bible is very clear about homosexuality. The bible clearly declares homosexuality as an abomination

  36. Zedian says:

This is the reason why Zambia should never be a Christian nation. They will want us to behave like some of those mythical people in the Bible. We should not think Europeans are evil because they no longer go to church. Its because they have refused religious extremism which is the side effect of religion. We Africans were evangelised mostly by these people who have abandoned it. Yet we behave like we received it in our blood. WAKE UP AFRICAN. Open your eyes!

  37. Mako says:

What must not be allowed is to accept the practice of homosexuality as normal. It is a pervasion. Just because many people are pervets does not make pervasion acceptable. A society must not tolerate pervasion! This statement explains why the west has now found Christianity to be the greatest threat to their ‘rights’!

Christians are openly prosecuted in UK these days for simply standing for mere religious convictions. Christianity has become uncivil while pervasion has become tolerable! “The call good bad and bad good”.

The ‘rights’ of gays are promoted while those pf religion are stifled. All in quest to champion ‘fairness’ . But what is good without the interpretation of religion, what is right without divine revelation?

Is no surprising that men nowadays call bad evil and good as bad!

  38. MrZingy says:

You have as much control over your sexual preference as you do the colour of your skin. Homosexuality exists in all races and cultures. It knows no boundaries. The fact is that whilst homosexuality is abnormal it is natural – just like albinoism. As Africans we have been on the receiving end of centuries of oppression and victimisation based on our complexion. Shame on us for becoming the evil that we fought for so long!!!!!

  39. Mako says:

Homosexuality has been around for very long time. But what is important to note is that in the times it has flourished what has followed are great catastrophes. It was rampant amongst the Greeks even practised by some well known phylosophers and people of high standing in society. It was not unusual for the learned of their time to have boys for their indulgance. But this pervasion when it spills over has always been attended and followed by calamities.

This pervasion is rampant in the developed world. Surely, in africa whilst there is no denying that it exists but not to the levels found in the west. It is a practice that must openly be condemned.

“In claiming to be wise they have become fool”

  40. Proudly GAY says:

People who prefer to argue with insults have nothing to talk about. Its a shame that people who went to school can argue like some of you. I challenge you to spend time to research on homosexuality instead of using little knowledge to blog. You claim you are custodians of our culture but which culture condones insults you’ve been pouring on gays here? You say they are worse than dogs but you forget gays are your own brothers living with you. Homosexuality is a reality world over. Of course here in Zambia its done in secrecy because we are used to be dishonest about our sexuality. No wonder why AIDS has depleted us! And just because it’s secret does not mean its not there. Personally I know 15 couples who have tried to be honest about their homosexuality under very difficult situations. And homosexuality is never imported from the West. That is living in denial and playing the blame game as we have done about AIDS. Like it or not homosexuality is part of humanity. Deny it at your own ignorance!

  41. Bevan says:

Truth must be told. There are homos in Zambia. They have always been there. Our society is biased against them & so we were taught it is evil (just like using the left hand in some so-called African cultures). We did not import them from anywhere. They are here among us. While you wish they were not. The truth is they are here indeed. Denial won’t send them away. These bazungus are simply saying open your eyes and see the truth. I’m sure very soon we’ll have a gay President. Where are you going to run to then?

  42. Mako says:

    Cont’d

threatening to spillover. Sodom was real, they were children and infants in Sodom when God poured his wrath on them. He can do so even today. The homos best chance is whilst he has shame! Just like we all go through temptations to do the thing that is wrong: stealing, fornication, adultery, greed, glutony. Whilst our conscious prods us we have a chance to overcome. But once we justify our wrong desires we eliminate our escape and so does the homo.

One of those men in Malawi said something that he can’t do without the other, that without his partner he would rather die or something like that. That is a sign that it is beyond the normal, he needs urgent help!

  43. Mako says:

I rather feel pity for these homos because instead of forsaking their twisted lusts they justify them. Is there hope for them? Yes if they repent and turn away from their sin which are beyond just their pervasive lusts! Jesus died for such as they are! The more this pervasion becomes rampant the more likely that God is about to react.

What has kept God from pouring his wrath upon these nations where this pervasion is rampant is his mere grace on account of his children. America and Europe has produced great men of God the fruits which have been seen through cenuries. But what is happening now is frightening! Will God visit in his wrath as he did in Sodom?

I say so because the sin and pervasions in these lands are becoming worse by the day and pervasion is thre

  44. Lucas says:

The question of whether homosexuality is from the west is questionable. From my view Zambians are in DENIAL about the nature of this lifestyle. The truth I think is that homosexuals are a secret society in Zambia. They are underground. No different from witches or some people with HIV. The west are open about it and they are perceived by us as bring the lifestyle into Zambia. This is a joke. Way back in the 70s and 80s I was aware and knew about gay activities.
Pushing this issue and pointing fingers at other people will not solve this problem.
I support the call for a research to be done in Zambia about the prevalence of homosexuality by Dr Manasseh Phiri. Talking emotionally against homosexuality is a waste of time since we need facts on the table before we utter meaningless words.
Global research says about 10% of population are homosexuals. My guess is that Zambia is no different and a lot of people are closeted or live double lives (low down).
I wish Zambians can put this divisive issue behind them, since it is impossible to solve, and concentrate on more urgent and solvable matters such as health, education, roads, social security etc.

  45. Mako says:

When men throw away God’s law this is what results. They claim to be developed but what is good about this pervasion? The more such a wrong is tolerated the more you invite worse pervasions.

I’m pretty sure that these people, homos, initially had shame over their inclinations but as soon as they found out that they were not alone, that shame became lost. Whilst they had shame they had a greater chance of overcoming this evil. Once they lost shame they become determined and justify their wrong lusts.

It is like one who suddenly becomes tempted to sleep with a married woman yet consciouly aware that it is not right to do so. But if adultery is rampant in a society the shame of committing adultery diminishes and so it becomes rampant and unshameful.

Those animals with lusts for little children have strong and real urges, the community by it’s values by condemning these pervasions will help to return value.

Development and advancement without God is meaningless. In these so called developed worlds, religion specifically Christianity is being eroded and it is not surprising that in those peoples pervasion has become ordinary.

Women sleep with dogs, men sleep with corpses, women become men and the reverse, men choose to grow horns, witchcraft is an accepted art, and so on and so forth. That is the price for forsaking God. And so God forsakes them! It is but a matter of time and they will self distract!

Better be a poor man with sense than a king who is a fool. We love the sinner but hate his sin.

  46. KAPATAMOYO says:

Warped and morally devoid so-called “Human Rights Watch” need to go back to school.

It is no human right to be a homesexual, a lesbian, an adulterer, a fornicator, a thief, a peadophile, a murderer, a terrorist, a rapist or a warlord.

Anyone who engages in these and other diabolic activities have forfeitted their own human rights.

Let us keep the rot out of our countries and reject this hellish Western hegimony; and please don’t use HIV/AIDS as an excuse to permit homosexuality through the back door.

  47. muntu says:

Always good to see zambians agree on one thing, just like in football, when all political opinions are kept aside

  48. J2O says:

The so called Human rights watch should just call all your fellow homos to America and wherever they are welcome. DO NOT CORRUPT ZAMBIA.

You have corrupted America now you want to spread your perversion.

Members of parliament do not entertain such rubbish.

By the way, WATCH OUT FOR SOME LAWYERS who are used to promote such.

Do not say you were not warned.

  49. African says:

These are the consequences of depending on aid and foreign investors. Zambians take Dambisa moyo’s advice in Dead Aid.

  50. Nyama soya says:

Homosexuallity does not bring development but division. Even so called developed countries homophobia is rampant

  51. Easterner says:

Ukuchita pamputi ati ni normal, tamumfwa amafi ukununka? And where do you think children will come from?

  52. IWPZ says:

If Zambia is an indipendent nation, then not even our leaders have the right to answer on our behalf to these stupid requests.
The white said never again shall we bring slavery to Africa yet they have come back with a smart trick in the name of donor community.
Zambia is for Zambians and Zambia is about God’s Values not what the anti christ says.
God help us not to fall in the hands of these wicked Men.

  53. Njombwinjo says:

Ati ba Proudly Gay, stupid! u cant compare wat Mugabe is doing to ya foolish acts, ya even sayin ya more human wat animal can claim to be human. just because ya push xcriments. Look the islamist dont want you christians are condeming you. ya an animal a dog!

  54. quango says:

this issue we are saying is culture can be described as knowledge.the people of this continent are faced with lack of information on important topics and the result can be seen by their reaction when faced with decision.

GAYS or consenting adults should be left on their own as they understand implications of there actions.firstly by egaging in these activities they accept that there relationship will not bear fruits from their biological make ups. Secondly society has its acceptable norms that it lives by.Our society is not yet ready to accept people showing affectiong in public whether be it same sex or otherwise.

With comments about white people forcing us to accept things, maybe we should stop begging.the white people have a developed citizenry and have laws that respect peronal dignity,so long as it does not injure another person.

It’s upto a person to make that decision what they will be like in their adult life.what we need to do is ensure each and every zambian is accorded a chance to get neccessary infromation to make the right choice.

with time people will be more focused on important things and the site of gay people will not be at the top.i think the couple in malawi where taking things too far but that is the first step to change laws and peoples perceptions.

My fellow zambians even though you say it shall never happen, just look back a few years ago what was not acceptable in culture?mini skirts where forbidden, music videos with scantly dressed girls will not be aired, music containing certain conotations would not be heard as it was viewed to corrupt morals.

GAYs are humans like you and me,but the time is not ready for them to be fully integrated in this new culture.trust me my fellow zambians this is not an issue as it seems like.some of you with your weak christian principles are easily blown away with riches and wealth.

  55. Village Concept - Kitwe says:

Please remove this photo. This is abomination of the desolation spoken by Daniel the prophet. When you see these things happen look up for your redemption draws nigh.Jesus is coming soon.

  56. cs says:

In my view Mugabe said the truth, animals reason more than gays because they realiase a male cannot sleep with a male nor female with a female,

  57. Quezu says:

come on, prison is the last place these 2 need to be sent, to them its like manor from heaven. they shld both be sent to seperate womens prison with hard sexual labour on all inmates.

  58. Political Prostitute says:

They will surely find a ready “market” for their pervasive behavior in prison !

we christians should pray for their deliverance from the grips of Satan.

  59. Kibakimani says:

Last night there was a very heated phone in programe on BBC World Service. The program was preceeded by an interview from the british Foreign secretary who made it clear that all civilised counties had accpted homosexuality and it was encumbent upon all africa counties to follow suite. He singled out Malawi as being of much interest to them becuase britain was the large Aid donor to Malawi and therefore Malawi was expected to ascribe to cilised practices in governance “such as accepting gay rights”. He actually made veiled threats on the implication of not heading to their calls.

What was amusing was how passionate all the whites who called sounded, while most Africans from accross the continent where stackly unapologetic. This matters is proving to be a seriuos clash of two cultures. I think before being too judgemental, the West should take time to understand Aficans on this matter and African should as well try to understand what these white stand for on this issues, coz it is apparent that the two cultures are at the moment diametrically pited against each other.

  60. Splaka says:

ZD, that pic is disgusting! Please pull it down. You should have shown two hot chicks kissing. Trust me, we will not object

But if anyone wants to be screwed up the ass, I say that is punishment enough. Live and let live

  61. Peter Daka says:

Never. Not in Zambia. It shall never happen. We stand on firm ground

  62. Proudly Gay says:

Gays are humans and it is evil to descriminate us on the basis of our homosexual orientation. What has happened in Malawi should not be repeated here. Its grossly inhumane. Is this the reason you want to declare Zambia a christian nation so that you judge everyone by your standards? Where is the respect for an individual’s dignity? Just because you can’t imagine yourself being gay does not mean there are no people who are like that. I am proudly gay and more human than some of you bluffing here. I respect heterosexual people and never scorn them on the basis of my orientation. Please, I AM HUMAN AND I DESERVE TO BE TREATED AS SUCH. If Mugabe call us dogs or pig, who is more dog and pig between us and him? How many Zimbabweans has he killed to preserve his power? He’s fond of calling people names when he forgets its him who is more evil. Zambians should feel embarassed even to quote this man on gay people.

  63. Jessy says:

so sad…but nothing has been solved the two men will continue with their gay activities while in prison unless they are going to serve with female inmates.

Gay people are a threat to society…their acts to not promote child bearing…..i mean how can a man impregnant a fellow man? even if they adopt children will grow up thinking that being gay is the way to go so gay people or lesbians should not be allowed in our society…..

  64. Kachisa says:

Larry you must be sick how do we protect prominent Gay men in our country..Thats nonsense.Gay shall not and should never be accepted in our country…We have a culture & the developed world can keep thier culture when it comes to GAY FUCKING NORMS…..

  65. Junior Citizen says:

Watchdog PLEASE!!! That picture is offensive.

    Kindly remove it.

  66. The truth says:

Homosexuals must be cast out (death penult) they are an abomination. Even before the coming of the bible to our country this homosexuality was considered against the gods. So these lunatics must leave us alone.

  67. Plot One says:

ZWD please remove that picture it is really sending a shiver in my spin. This nonsense by donors must be stopped. Let them take their stupid cultures elsewhere not in our country. If it means withholding their funds so be it. Gov’t must even stop receiving aid from these foolish donor organisations promoting homosexuality.

  68. Mary Mulenga says:

Why can’t we be left to choose what we want for ourselves?

Must everything we do be judged by the west?

At what point do people just respect the sovereignty of other people?

That white man must stop this rot!

If they support gays, let them do it on their own turf.

    Leave Zambia to Zambians, please!

The Dutch allow weed smoking which damages health.

Why don’t they fight that instead? Because the Dutch are white, they are never wrong. Amsterdam has instead become the holiday resort for weed smokers from the west.

  69. Luke Mbewe says:

Every country must preserve its culture. In Zambia, our culture teaches that homosexuality is abnormal because biologically, there is no human developed interface between people of the same sex. A woman cannot biologically sexually interface with another woman and neither can a man. The anus is for releasing excrement, the penis is for sexual intercourse and urinating, and the vagina is purely for reproduction after successful sexual intercourse.

Therefore, it is important to respect each other’s cultures and not try to force people of a different culture to adopt a foreign one. Already DSTV has eroded our cultural values by indoctrinating western weaknesses on our people. Today our people are buying expensive cars whilst their kids and relatives wallow in poverty. Why? Because western culture dictates that success is determined by what you drive and how you clothe yourself. Western culture is bringing more poverty to Africa by forcing our people to adopt values that are foreign.

For this reason, I respect China whose aid to Africa does not require that we are forced to adopt their culture. If Chinese love snakes, dogs and cats for dinner, that is their way of life. Unlike the west, China does not spend money trying to force us to eat dogs too!

We need more unconditional aid to replace western aid whose intention is to corrode our value system and promote dependency by adopting cultures we do not agree with.

Please, white people, leave Zambians alone with their culture.

  70. Mimi says:

I hope the Zambian leaders will stand their ground and write back to these idiots and tell them to hang. Malawi did it, we can also ‘did’ it. We can’t be cowed into immorality by these people who are lower than dogs.

  71. Quezu says:

I think that this matter is so fundamental that it should be subjected to a referendum where people can choose between this “new” culture and our existing arrangements. On the ballot paper it should clearly stated whether people should accept this new way or stick to what they know.

  72. Quezu says:

These kind of letters have no place in islamic countries. Why are these chaps picking on Zambia? Is it because we are black and poor?

  73. Annan says:

president Mugabe has the right description;they are lower than dogs and pigs

  74. Larry says:

Prominent Zambian homosexuals must be protected. Let us not have a negative image to the developed world like malawi.
