We recommend that every marine aquarium with saltwater utilize Live Rock for either filtration or decoration. Most fish-only aquariums today are really FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) tanks. The benefits to all fish and invertebrates is well documented and some sensitive fish like dwarf angels have a very hard time surviving in captivity without Live Rock present in the aquarium. |

Live Rocks are pieces of coral that have broken off from a coral reef, the corals have died, and their remains have become covered with other types of living organisms, such as coraline algae and sponges. Live rock is sometimes called reef rock.
Live Rock is exported from many different reefs throughout the world, including Fiji, Tonga, Namoli, the Marshall Islands, and the Caribbean. Each of these areas exports a unique looking rock, and you can see samples of several types of live rock in the pictures above.
Live Rock is Important in both fish-only aquariums and in coral reef aquariums. Live rock is the natural home for saltwater reef fish, and live rock is essential for the health and comfort of reef fish.
Live rock is also the perfect home for the beneficial bacteria that provide biological filtration in aquariums. It is much more difficult to keep a saltwater fish tank without plenty of live rock. |

How much Live Rock does an Aquarium Need?
The recommended amount of Live Rock in a saltwater aquarium is about 1½ to 2 pounds per gallon. So a 30-gallon saltwater aquarium should have about 45 to 60 lbs. of live rock. It's acceptable to mix live rock from different islands to give your aquarium a completely unique appearance.
Live Rock is easy to maintain and is recommended for all aquarists from the beginners to the experts. Live Rock requires moderate lighting and moderate water movement. Live Sand |
|
|
Essential in every Saltwater Aquarium. |
|
|
Live sand is full of beneficial bacteria including anaerobic bacteria that convert nitrate to nitrogen, which then evaporates from the aquarium. The layer of live sand must be thick to do this, and a layer from 3" to 6" or even deeper is recommended in a saltwater aquarium. The sand also provides an ideal bed for the live rock and prevents the rocks from scratching or cracking the bottom of the aquarium.
