BHAGALPUR — According to reports, 14 coaches of the New Delhi-Guwahati Rajdhani Express derailed near Naugachia railway station in Bhagalpur district at around 6:40am today. The incident occurred between Nawgachia and Kharik Railway Station after the driver of the Rajdhani Express reportedly heard a loud explosion and applied emergency brakes, leading to the derailment.
All passengers, except one who sustained minor injuries, are said to be safe. However, the derailment has brought the railway traffic to a complete halt on this busy corridor.
Though officials are reluctant to say anything about the cause of derailment, locals suspect Maoists’ hand behind the incident.
A team of engineers, rail safety experts and doctors have been rushed to the spot to asses the damage and carry out repair works. Special arrangements have been done by the Railway authorities to transport the passengers of Rajdhani Express from Naugachia railway station for onward journey.
Meanwhile, Railways have set up helpline numbers in Delhi for the convenience of the passengers and their families. The New Delhi railway helpline numbers are 011-23341074, 011-23341072 and Old Delhi – 011-23967332, 011-23962389, Nawgachia – 06421-211345.

I happen to be one of the passenger in the train and appreciate the police people who arrived fast at the site of incidence and cordoned off the area for safety and security of passengers. It was surprising to note that there was no BSNL network for mobile but we were lucky that Reliance and some others were working and we could contact our relatives. Railway’s medical assistance came around 9.00 AM, two and half hours after the accident, which puts a question mark on the efficiency of railway’s capability to provide timely relief.
I thank God for saving us from a serious accident and must appreciate the engine driver who acted fast and applied emergency brakes.
Further it would be more appreciated if our politicians avoid just playing the blame game and play a constructive role for avoiding such incidence in future. Action must be taken against the people responsible for playing with the life of railway passengers and properties. There is need for serious thought and better security measures by the Govt in Indian Railways.
