Citing Cadmium on McDonald’s Glasses

Lots of fears and controversies about cadmium exposure prompted McDonald’s for announcing a recall of over 12 million promotional glasses featuring cartoon characters from the movie “Shrek Forever After”. The said glasses which are sold for $2 dollars each contained cadmium traces on its paint which may cause cancer and other ailments.

Though Consumer Product Safety Commission said that there’s only low risk to children from the glasses, there are already three total recalls made which includes the recall of the 55,000 necklaces sold at Wal-Mart stores. Senior director of product safety Consumer Reports said that cadmium was being used in some manufactured goods in replacement of lead, which has been exterminate from many products due to widespread health concern.

Consumer Products Safety Commission spokesman Scott Wolfson, said that the agency is already working to establish similar requirements for products like jewelry. Cancer, kidney problems and weakened of bones are just some sample ailments associated with long time exposure of cadmium.

However, as the level of cadmium found in the McDonald glasses was lower than the other products which have been recall also, it consequently has lower risk also.

Walt Riker, McDonald’s spokesperson said that of the 12 million glasses distributed, about 7 million were already on consumers. So for people who wanted the $2 refund, they will provide instruction in their website on how to return the glasses.

If so products are returned, a total of $15 million refunds allotted from McDonalds. Riker also added that they already withdraw the advertising regarding the promotion of the glasses.
