Starting on Monday: esctoday.com Top 10s

To pass the time between the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 and the beginning of the national final season for the Eurovision Song Contest 2011, esctoday.com will take back a look at the history of the Eurovision Song Contest every week with a top ten list on a certain topic.

Every week, a top ten list on a certain topic will be revealed. It will start on Modays with the places 10-8, followed by 7 and 6 on Tuesdays, 5 and 4 on Wednesdays, 3 and 2 on Thursdays and the number one on Fridays. An overview will be provided on Saturdays.

In dedication to Germany's victory in the Eurovision Song Contest 2010, the first motto will be:

  • "The top 10 Eurovision hits from Germany"

Criteria to make the list (national and international):

  • High sales figures
  • High chart positions
  • Heavy airplay
  • Status of a song as a "classic"
If you know songs that meet the criteria above, you can suggest them to be featured on the list by posting a reaction!

Don't forget Nino de Angelo! (L)
Nicole, Dschinghis Khan - who else?

If ESCToday have too little to post about until December then why not start updating news on the (supposedly) upcoming Asiavision/Asia-Pacific Song Contest 2010??

Sorry if I offended or hurt you. I never thought that I would because I have never met anyone in Germany who likes that song (and as I have said before, this is not about music).

"Almost every person of some education or taste thinks like that in Germany. That song is such a disgrace! So fake and dishonest! GRRRRRRRRR!!!!! "

That's an enormous exaggeration... I'm sorry to say that...
I won't speak of my own feelings or the ones of my friends because you could argue that I'm too young to understand... But I consider my parents neither as uneducated nor tasteless and they are able to feel what a song in its whole simplicity can mean for a nation... If you're not, then don't make it an example for the rest...
I know many people who couldn't feel the same wave of energy I felt in 2006 with the Soccer's World Cup held in Germany, but all in all, they can't deny that certain spirit it effectively had for the majority of people...
I think it's the same with 'Ein Bisschen Frieden'...

I understand you completely! :D
But:
A bit of peace, a bit of dreams
And that people won't cry as often
A bit of peace, a bit of love
May I never lose hope again

Why not to believe and hope a bit...........?

To tell you the truth, if I made a list of all ESC songs ever, 'Ein bisschen Frieden' would have to fight 'Butterflies' for last place on my list. I even prefer 'Wohin kleines Pony' to those two songs!

|But come on! :O :D :D
Switzerland 2004 is the worst song in ESC ever, and terrible singing! :D At least she sang better! :D

'Ein bisschen Frieden' is definitely worse in my book! And I love Austria 2003, the lyrics in particular :)

Guildo Horn is also annoying as hell, can't stand his entry! :D
2000 is awful too, and Austria in 2003 is one of my biggest ESC nightmares! :D :D

I don't like Mex' song personally either and I never listen to 'Can't Wait until Tonight' but I still concede that it is not a bad song. You know, the old personal taste vs. song quality thing I keep insisting on ...

You got me wrong. You have to be both German and educated to feel like that about the song because it trivialised all the good things the German peace movement of the early 80s stood for.

Dino Mil [58964]

OK, so why I still like it, while I am well educated? :P

I know that a lot of esctoday members like that song (even Paschalis, with whom I normally agree a lot ...) but to me it is just another fake and cheesy Siegel song saying 'Look, we are so nice and multicultural here in Germany' ...

Btw, I forgot Max Mutzke - Can't Wait until Tonight. That one was ok too.

''Among the worst ever was 'Ein bisschen Frieden' imo, such a tasteless, harmless, cheesy, and bourgeois usurpation of the German peace movement of that time. Siegel jumping on the bandwagon of Zeitgeist''

It happens to have a friend from Munster and she has the same feelings about this song :P

Unfortunately, Germany is among my least favourite ESC countries. In fact, there are only four German songs I really love:

1. Nora Nova - Man gewöhnt sich so schnell an das Schöne
2. Roger Cicero - Frauen regiern die Welt
3. Lena - Satellite
4. Texas Lightning - No No Never

Others I don't mind are:

Walter Andreas Schwarz - Im Wartesaal zum großen Glück
Margot Eskens - Die Zeiger der Uhr
Katja Ebstein - Wunder gibt es immer wieder, Diese Welt, Theater
Joy Fleming - Ein Lied kann eine Brücke sein
Ireen Sheer - Feuer
Dschinghis Khan - Dschinghis Khan
Lena Valaitis - Johnny Blue (If I ignore the cheesy lyrics)
Mary Roos - Aufrecht gehn
Michelle - Wer Liebe lebt (Only the song itself. I don't like Michelle's voice at all. She had one of the best dresses ever though!)

All the others with the exception of the two Margot Hielscher entries, Mary Roos' first song and Stefan Raab's 'Wadde hadde dudde da' (those 4 are still ok somehow) are utter cr*p in my opinon. Among the worst ever was 'Ein bisschen Frieden' imo, such a tasteless, harmless, cheesy, and bourgeois usurpation of the German peace movement of that time. Siegel jumping on the bandwagon of Zeitgeist. Yuck!

Although, Germany, statistically is high in my personal list, I find it hardly to create a top 10. So, I would just cite some entries that I really liked in the past.

''Feuer'' in 1978, ''Johny Blue'' 1981, ''Ein bisschen Frieden'' 1982 and ''Sattelite'' 2010.
Ofcourse, nice entries also, have been ''No, no, never '' 2006, and ''Frauen Regieren die Welt'' 2007.

Tha'ts all from me :)

Toggie, I would like to have your comments ;)
