These two libraries, which are magnificent architectural works realized by Eugène Payette, feature interiors of a quality and an authenticity which are exceptional, both for the form and quality of materials and for their decorative elements. Opened in 1915 and 1917 respectively, they are both jewels of Beaux-Arts architecture in Montreal.
The St. Sulpice library, which is classified as a historic monument, is the first French language library worthy of the name, while the Montreal library is the first French language free public library.
The opening of the Grande Bibliothèque will lead to the closing of these two heritage buildings as the number of users plummets.
Héritage Montréal approached the office of the Minister of Culture and Communications and the mayor of Montreal to ensure that new and lasting uses would be found for these buildings. The organisation will continue following up this dossier, making sure it will not be forgotten.
