Part 1

Results analysis: Numbers and statistics in the final

As always after the Eurovision Song Contest, we take a look at the results from a statistical point of view. The analysis is split into four parts and the first part is dedicated to the numbers and records in the final.

The winner

Norway won the Eurovision Song Contest for the third time following victories in 1985 and 1995 and is therefore along with Israel one of two countries that have won three times exactly. For the first time it happened that the contest was won by a male soloist two years in a row as Dima Bilan had brought the trophy to Russia in 2008. Alexander Rybak got 387 points, which is a record number, and 16 times 12 points, ten times 10 points and ten times 8 points. The winning song got points from all other countries, which has not happened since 1997 and the lowest mark were two points from Bulgaria. For the first time since 2000, the winning country was leading throughout the whole voting. Norway got an average of 9.4 points from every other country which is almost a record but still behind the United Kingdom's average score of 9.6 points in 1976.

Best results

Azerbaijan has achieved its best result ever finishing third. However, it was only the second time the country took part. More impressively, Iceland managed to equal its best result, the second place of 1999. However, of course, Yohanna achieved the highest amount of points for Iceland ever. France and the United Kingdom both achieved their best results since 2002 and they also break a curse as no big four country has been in the top ten since 2004 (curiously enough, in 2004 the other two big four countries Spain and Germany were in the top ten). Having reached the final for the first time since the introduction of the semi final stage, Estonia also managed to achieve its best result by a mile since 2002. With a larger gap Denmark achieved its best result since 2005.

Worst results

Having been saved by the jury in the first semi final, Finland achieved its lowest placing in a Eurovision Song Contest final ever finishing 25th and last. It is the first last place for Finland since 1996 and ninth last place overall. Armenia is the seocnd country that achieved its worst place ever despite finishing tenth in during its fourth participation. Albania achieved its lowest palcing in a final ever and even in every Eurovision show including semi finals equalling the 17th place of the 2007 semi final. Spain was near the bottom many times in recent years but the second last place in this year's final is still the lowest placing since 1999, when Spain finished last. Lithuania's 23rd place is the lowest result in a Eurovision final since 2002, but it has to be mentioned that the country was eliminated during the semi finals various times. Ukraine has not been in the top ten for the first time since 2005 and the same accounts for Russia. However, Russia has also not been in the top three for the first time in four years. Sweden achieved its worst result since 1992, when Christer Björkman finished 22nd on homeground.

12 points

The following countries got 12 points tonight:

  1. Norway - 16 times
  2. Turkey - 6 times
  3. Iceland - 3 times
    Bosnia & Herzegovina - 3 times
    Greece - 3 times
  4. Estonia - twice
    Moldova - twice
  5. Armenia - once
    Spain - once
    United Kingdom - once
    Croatia - once
    Azerbaijan - once
    Romania - once
    Russia - once

14 of the 25 competing countries got at least one set of points. Behind Norway, Turkey got the second highest amount of top marks despite finishing fourth after Iceland and Azerbaijan, who only got three and one set respectively. The lowest placed entry that got 12 points is the Spanish one reaching 24th place. This is also a record as the lowest placing ever for a country that got 12 points at least once behind Germany in 2008, who finished equal 23rd despite getting 12 points from Bulgaria.

The running order

Songs later in the running order did not seem to have an advantage in the final. Only four of the entries that reached the top ten were performed in the second half of the show. Furthermore, the songs performed second last and last finished last and second last respectively.

Stay tuned for the upcoming parts of our results analysis. The parts are:

  1. Numbers and statistics in the final
  2. Numbers and statistics in the semi final
  3. What if...?
  4. Voting blocs, friendly neighbours & diasporas

Mr. Erichson of the EBU:
When you still there, please introduce 50% jury and 50% televote also for the semi finals. That way, the whole festival would be more fair! The winner, Norway received point from ALL countries, West and East!!

same old crap every year! with or without jury, friends and neighbours vote for each other....the artificilally created hype helps the worst songs and so on...we must all realise this is a big, fat joke and nothing substantial! just a night of light, kitch entertainment and not the Musical Olympics!

it is stupid to talk which song is good and which is not because everyone have different taste for example i like fast song(R&B) but someone like slow songs and i think that turkey and azerbaijan had the most beautiful songs and someone of this country needed to win but someone didn't think that and i respect that

@Norwegian slut

The fact that you're a slut (I suppose an empty-headed slut) doesn't give you the right to call people "deranged stupid assholes".

Only Cyprus jurys stop diaspora voting : 12 points Greece, 10 points Norway, 8 points Azerbaijan, 7 points United Kingdom, 6 points Denmark, 5 points Iceland, 4 points Armenia, 3 points Estonia, 2 points Romania, 1 point Russia ! If it was only televoting results is going to be like that: Greece 12 points, Ukraine 10 points, Armenia 8 points, Russia 7 points, Moldova 6 points, Romania 5 points , Norway 4 points, Lithuania 3 points, Croatia 2 points and Estonia 1 point ;)

Congratulations Norway! I kind of agree with the songs that reached top positions, except Turkey and Azerbaijan :S what, what? Is all I can say about it.
Portugal deserved top 10, but we are happy anyway! They were amazing.

It seems lamentably that the implementation of juries hasn't reduced much the impact that neighbour and diaspora voting has on results. For example, I think the Spanish entry was nothing worse than the Turkish one so how to explain that Turkey was 4th and Spain 24th?
I must say that I was impressed by vocal and stage performance of the Russian entry "Mamo": simple but at the same time so effective. I think that this year's Russian entry was way better than last year when Russia won.

C'mon spaniards! I liked Soraya's song, but she performed so auwfully, that even I (who was a fan of the song) could not give her a single point. Next year take ESC more seriously (as UK and France did) and you'll see that you'll score a better result. And don't forget to broadcast semifinals!

Interesting to see the last performers of the final reached lowest places as well. I noticed that this time the recap of all the songs took longer than usual. The last songs in the recap were shown when the voting was halfway over. This could mean that the people that would wait for the recap before they vote wouldn't for the last songs until halfway into the voting which would have been a disadvantage. I wonder if they have statistics on the voting iteself.

Azerbaijan 3rd. Because EUROPE loves ALWAYS and AySel. It is not diaspora voting. Diaspora voting decrises 50 %.

After watching this event that i have loved for so long turn out the way it did is a sad sad situation. Terry Wogan is starting to sound like he was right. Diaspora still played a huge part in this contest yet again.
Obviously you don't need to be a good singer these days.
Iceland, UK, France, Portugal, Albania, Germany, Lithuania and Sweden were the only ones who were great vocally, The rest were just watever

After that congrats to Iceland, Uk, and Greece on making the top 10 who were actually in my top 10 and also to France Patricia you were very classy and lastly Portugal it was the most beautiful song and you deserved to win but sadly not maybe you should move to Eastern Europe LOL

Spains song was awful... I knew their second place song would have taken them into the top ten... Their staging was tacky and the magic trick left my mother confused... She was expecting a quick change not some crappy dancing and then the singer appearing at the other side of the stage sweating from the sprint while the camera was off her. The Portuguese should however be proud of themselves and their winner... You'll do it one day. Spain get out of the past and stop whining. Its been said to the Brits for years and now I'm saying it to you. Europe doesn't hate you.

I think Norway was a fair winner. Congratulations.
Congratulations to Portugal too for trying with such a good song and performance. Keep up with the good work.

The diaspora voting spoiled the show, again. It keeps getting worse. It was insulting.

GREECE gave the most fair points...10 to NORWAY,12 to the UK and 8 to AZERBAIJAN....did not vote for neighbors,,but for quaility

There is one thing that I just can't understand. Why do the top 10 countries not qualify automatically to the grand final anymore just like they use to and instead, end up in the semi finals? I think it was so much better that way instead of only the winner and the big four qualifying while the other countries have to compete in the semi finals the following year. Does anyone know the answer to this question? It's driving me nuts!

Turkey was overrated, while France, Germany and Spain were extremely underrated.

I'm glad UK did so well.

Ukraine got a bad result hahaha

In my opinion:

- I agree last night ESC was the best in many years: quality of songs improved dramatically from last year and the stage was simply fantastic.

- No discussion about the winner: juries, fans, general audience, polls, bets...all of them agreed.

- 50/50 changed A LOT the results: Spain gave 12 pts to Norway and 10 pts to UK!!!! Unthinkable with 100% televote. Certainly, some countries no changed (Turkey, Cyprus...) but they were only a few.

- Some countries scored anormally bad: Sweden, Malta and Spain mainly. I was very disappointed with Soraya's result but it's no reason to make a hype about withdrawing. UK, France even Iceland suffered this kind of upsets last years and finally they find the right way.

- I think there won't be changes in the system for 2010. I think this system worked well. But it's possible that the 50/50 system could be applied at the semis also.
