Executive Master's in Leadership

Georgetown University’s Executive Master’s in Leadership (EML) program is an unparalleled and extraordinary opportunity for those who wish to become more creative and effective leaders, capable of making meaningful change within an organization. With a minimum of 8 years, and an average of 15 years, in professional leadership experience, EML students include  doctors, engineers, military officers, corporate leaders, and entrepreneurs.

The only master’s degree program of its kind offered by a prominent business school and university, the EML is an inter-disciplinary program that draws on the lessons of leadership in different fields ranging from business and ethics to international relations, public policy, and behavioral sciences.

Program Design

Over the course of 13 months, Georgetown’s EML program integrates a comprehensive education in leadership theory with opportunities for students to apply their learning in practical business settings.

To create a rich conceptual understanding of the purpose and strategies of leadership, Georgetown’s EML program synthesizes a diverse range of disciplines including business, ethics, government, public policy, history, and behavioral sciences.

Working closely with Georgetown’s distinguished  faculty, students analyze three interrelated aspects of leadership:

  • The Individual aspect enhances critical thinking and problem-solving skills and tasks students with developing a personal leadership action plan.
  • The Team aspect solidifies the negotiation and influence skills necessary for leadership in collaborative, team-based business environments;
  • The Organization aspect develops organizational strategy, governance, and institution-building skills necessary for senior management success.

In addition to regular coursework, all students participate in  three residencies, including one consulting project conducted abroad Capetown, South Africa in 2009). Held at the beginning, middle, and end of the program, each residency challenges students to integrate and apply their experience and learning in simulated and actual leadership scenarios.

Classes are held every other weekend – on Fridays from 1:00 pm-8:30 pm and on Saturdays from 8:30 am-4:30 pm – on the  Georgetown University campus  in Washington, D.C.
