The Park Commission spent $2,137 to build the Herbivorous Building, the Zoo’s first structure.  This was considered an important expenditure of tax money in those days, and it was the first step towards expanding the Zoo.  The historic structure was the first home to the animals at the West Park Zoo.  For many years the barn housed a variety of animals including camels, kangaroos and zebras.
