[edit] Biography

It takes some players hundreds of appearances for their names to be etched in the pantheon of players to have graced Old Trafford, some however can manage it in far fewer. Massimo Taibi had been a journeyman footballer spending short spells at a number of Italian clubs with his only lengthy spell between the sticks coming at Piacenza when Manchester United paid Venezia £4.4 million for his services in their attempts to find a replacement for Peter Schmeichel.

Taibi was bought to compete with Mark Bosnich and Raimond Van Der Gouw and threw him straight into the cauldron of competition against Liverpool at Anfield, things did not start well as Taibi flapped at a freekick to gift a goal to Sami Hypia but he recovered to make a string of outstanding saves and earned himself the man of the match award as United ran out 3-2 winners.

A 1-1 ground out draw against Wimbledon followed before Taibi's moment in United history arrived against Southampton at Old Trafford where an absolute howler which saw Taibi drop on a tame shot from Matt Le Tissier only to allow the ball to squirm through his grasp and his legs and trickle apologetically into the net gifting Southampton a 3-3 draw. Taibi proceded to blame his studs, everybody else knew who to blame and the press headlines summed it up when they christened Massimo "the Blind Venetian".

Taibi's fourth and final appearance was an even more humiliating affair as he conceded 5 goals at Stamford Bridge, Taibi's fate was sealed and on the 11th of July he departed Old Trafford for a net loss of £2 Million and 11 goals in only 4 appearances. A legend for all the wrong reasons.
