340-pound man jailed for criminal sexual conduct with child under 11

A 340-pound man has been arrested and is being held in the Beaufort County Detention Center on charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor under the age of 11.

Jasper Ray Marlowe, 32, of 9 Capwing Drive in Mink Point was arrested Tuesday and is being held in the jailhouse without bond pending prosecution.

This is the second incident involving Marlowe that has been reported this year by the Beaufort County sheriff’s department. According to a department press release in March, Marlowe contacted the sheriff’s department on the morning of March 8 to report that his neighbor on Capwing Drive, Evelyn Scroggins, age 70, was firing a pistol at his house.

According to the report, Marlow dropped to the ground to avoid the gunfire and stayed there until deputies arrived. Scroggins was arrested and charged with one count of assault with intent to kill after her house was surrounded by a sheriff’s department SWAT team.

The detention center’s database shows that the case against Scroggins was “nolle prossed”, meaning that the case was dropped because a judge determined that the charges could not be proved. That case was concluded on August 13, three weeks ago, according to the database.

He lists himself in Facebook as liking “chillin, fishing, hunting and having good ole country fun.” The Facebook page states that he is single and a “proud parent”, and that he likes explicit American gangsta music.

The date of last login to the Facebook account was August 30, two days before the arrest.

This is the second incarceration of Marlowe in the Beaufort County jail. He was arrested on November 6, 2001, charged with breach of trust, and released when the charges were dismissed. He weighed 308 pounds at that time.
