Her Home, Saved. When Doris Canales bought her home, she could afford the $1,700 monthly mortgage payment. But then she was persuaded to undertake one refinance after another, pushing the payment to $4,000, far beyond her ability to pay. She was on the verge of eviction. Then her granddaughter, Qiana Haywood, came to her as her advocate. They received a grant from The New York Times Neediest Subprime Program that enabled them to secure an affordable loan modification -- and to keep Ms. Canales in her home.

The New York Times Company Foundation conducts a range of philanthropic activities that include:

The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund. Each year, the Foundation administers a fund-raising campaign during the holiday season, with daily stories in The Times describing the travail of many of the city's neediest children, disabled and elderly. The campaign each year draws contributions from about 12,000 readers, totaling about $7 million. For five consecutive years, using funds from the Neediest endowment, the Foundation has created a summer jobs program for 1,000 disadvantaged teenagers.

The New York Times College Scholarship Program. Working with Times writers and editors as jurors, the Foundation each year selects Times Scholars, students who have overcome exceptional hardship to achieve excellence in New York City high schools. Each student receives a four-year college scholarship, mentoring and summer employment. To make a donation, click on: http://www.nycharities.org/donate/c_donate.asp?CharityCode=1004.

The Next Step Guide. For men and women just back from military service in Iraq and Afghanistan, the return to civilian life can be fraught with uncertainty. There are many benefits and services available to them but finding them can be difficult. To make the transition a little easier, The New York Times Company Foundation has created an online guide called The Next Step and an accompanying pocket guide given to returning veterans at local military posts and vet centers in the New York-New Jersey-Connecticut area. Campus Weblines.  This Web Site, developed with the help of students at Stuyvesant High School, offers a course in journalism and the software needed for students to create school newspapers online.

Prior Activities.  In 2009, the Foundation suspended two major activities. One was a program in which The Times Company matched gifts, dollar for dollar, by employees and retirees to qualifying nonprofit institutions.  The other was a program of grants to domestic organizations in journalism, education, culture, environment and service.  The journalism grants included New York Times Institutes for Journalists, week-long immersion courses for writers, editors and producers from around the country on cutting edge subjects like the Age Boom, Billionaires and Frontiers of Brain Research.
