Mike Sowell Giving the Keynot Address |
Mike Sowell is an assistant professor of journalism at Oklahoma State University, where he teaches media writing, news editing and sports journalism. He is the author of three books on baseball: The Pitch That Killed, which won the Casey Award as the best baseball book of 1989; July 2, 1903, and One Pitch Away. The Pitch That Killed and One Pitch Away were selected as New York Times’ notable books of the year.
Sowell also was a co-creator of Cardtoons, a set of baseball parody cards that became the subject of a lawsuit with the Major League Baseball Players Association. The case, Cardtoons v. Major League Baseball Players Association, now is featured in several media law textbooks.
Sowell was a sportswriter and columnist for 20 years, the last 15 at The Tulsa Tribune, where he won several state and national awards for his writing. He also was an editor and partner in First Down Publications, a start-up company that expanded from one college sports publication to seven print and online magazines.
He joined the faculty at Oklahoma State University in 1999, and now is focusing his research efforts on the origins of sports writing in America and the early sportswriters.
Sowell has been a member of the Society of American Baseball Research since 1985.
He lives in Stillwater, Oklahoma, with his wife, Ellen.
