THE GLASS KEY

Junior Deducer Nadine Cox, one-third of the dogged digging squad that unearthed the elusive Ohioan 5:

We just got back home, at almost 12:30 am.  What a day. Our team (Kim, Yvonne, and I) went with the idea that we would check out trees for any nail holes or abnormal scuff marks on the bark that looked like someone could have pried something off. We decided we would dig at any suspicious tree that met this criteria.

We got there about 7:30 pm. Only the truckers were there — no other teams, no one hunting at all. Seemed like everyone had given up.  We started our search and began systematically working over the area. We dug at three or four trees that fit our criteria, but didn't hit anything.

Then Kim found a tree in the back corner with a square tin marker about a foot off the ground, secured by three nails and a pen drawing of the pentagon shape etched into it. We dug. Shovel went in and..nothing. Next strike — thud. Yvonne actually shrieked, "That's hollow!" I shifted the shoved up a bit and struck again and the same sound — thud. Adrenaline started pumping.  I levered up the turf and looked down into the hole. Saw a plastic sandwich bag. Yelled, "It's it!"  Another lift of the shovel and I pulled the black box out. We screamed like three teenage girls at a Jonas Brothers concert.

We still couldn't believe it, and even now it seems surreal. My hands were shaking so bad I could barely open up the cloth. It felt flat and not like a number at all, and I even wondered if it was a hoax. But we opened the box and there it was: the 5, with its big emerald eye. I still can't believe it. Perseverance paid off.
