How to Teach a Dog the Sit Command

"Sit" is probably the easiest and most basic command that you can teach your dog. Sitting when told to will help curb a lot of behavior problems. There is a simple method for teaching this simple command--and here I will show you what it is.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Treats
  1. Step 1

Get some treats your dog really loves. You may need to try a few out to see what he can't resist.

  2. Step 2

Say your dog's name to get your dog's attention. As with any command, always get your dog's attention before giving the command. Once your dog is looking at you, you can move on to the next step.

  3. Step 3

Put a treat close to your dog's nose.

  4. Step 4

Move the treat up over your dog's head and lure your dog into the sit position as you say the command "sit."

  5. Step 5

Once your dog is in the sit position, very quickly give your dog the treat and praise.

Tips & Warnings
  • Train before meals.
  • Keep the training sessions short.
  • Have fun with your training.
  • Never train when your dog is tired.
