Unlocking Hidden MW2 Game-Types

That's right, there's a bunch of things that were either hidden or removed among them 3 game types and a bunch of maps, killstreak rewards and other stuff. This was a post on the official IW forums (post has already been deleted) on how to access these 3 hidden gametypes:

Step 1: Download and activate the console hack. More information about that can be found here:
http://www.modernwarfail2.com/2009/11/15/modern-warfare-2-unleashed-the-dev-console-unlocker-for-pc-v1-1/

Step 2: Start a private match, preferably using the console.

Step 3: Once in the game, enter one of the following commands (without the quotes):
“/set g_gametype gtnw”
“/set g_gametype oneflag”
“/set g_gametype vip”

Step 4: Try to play.

Addition (Thanks to Iragequit, See comments of this article):

If it isn’t working, try this: after entering the command to change the gametype, enter the command /map_restart

The first gametype – “gtnw” – is Global Thermonuclear War. To play, simply capture the objective: a nuclear bomb. When captured, the bomb detonates…
The second gametype – “oneflag” – is One Flag CTF. To play, capture the flag in the middle and bring it back to your base.
The third gametype – “vip” – is VIP. To play, defend the VIP. Or, if you’re on the other team, kill the VIP.

These gametypes were only tested on Afghan and Favela. They may not work for all maps.”

So it seems we have finally identified the DLC that Activision/IW wanted to pimp to us. It has been right in the game all along.

Oh IW, first the console, then lean and all the other stuff, sometimes I think you do this on purpose, like you know Kotick is a retard and the only way you can pull one over on him is doing stuff like this.

Either that or you think PC users are dumber than the average eggplant.

Thanks for Iragequit for reporting this and Thanks to E0N8 from the IW forums for the whole thing !!

Hey guys, I just wanted to ask... I just want to use the console hack to access these hidden game modes to play in private matches with my buddies... Is it possible to get banned using the console in private matches?

Thanks in advance

I was a console gamer until cod5 was released. My xbox360 got a red ring of death and I decided to buy cod5 for pc. What an amazing difference! hundreds of nazi zombie maps, a nazi zombie multiplayer mod (zombieX) and 64 people per map! Then i buy mw2 before reading that it was ported from the console to pc and now this! Nice find, but unfortunately all you people out there need to realize something horrible which could make some of you go crazy and kill some IW employees.

Most pc games I see get free dlc other consoles pay for not just the cod series. Heres why IW moved to Steam.... Borderlands! Games like this running on steam or steam only have DLC you need to pay for! So theres your answer. Just like borderlands soon you will see MODERN WARFARE 2 MAPPACK... $19.99

then a long fun description, a middle finger, and who knows what else. This is most likely going to be the case, so if this does happen ill just join the hackers and spread some hacks and ruin the game and turn everyone over to hamachi or tunngle or some other pirate network where we can all have 100% control over the game.

Why dont game companies just hire modders to work at their companys? you guys know what the community wants and you dont mind making it. they would be more succesful if they allowed modders to make DLC for the consoles and in return allowed them to keep their modding abllitys with out hacking the game. no im not saying you make DLC for the consoles only, im saying have the PC communite vote on their favorite maps for that month and then send those maps to the consoles.
i would rather pay for something the communite made then something the studio made.
• Spyrian
Seriously, just one question - what's the proof you're going to need to pay for the stuff hidden on the disc? They might just work for patches on it.

I want to hang a notice over the rest of this post: I think this generation of Consoles is the most balanced that have ever existed at one time, and what you choose to play on, whether it be PC or Console, depends entirely on what you as a gamer personally prefer.

Under what circumstances would it be OK to pay for something to be unlocked on a piece of media that you already own? It's like spending five bucks to unlock special features on a 20 dollar DVD. Everyone saying that PC gamers need to STFU about this needs to look at the big picture.

Imagine you are a console gamer, I don't care which console. Look at the history of DLC on consoles. Console gamers have mostly always had to pay for new content, even if it isn't worth the money you spend on it.

Case in point, Halo 3. The Legendary map pack was released with three new maps, for ten dollars. Then six months later, ODST comes out with not only those three maps, the maps in the Heroic pack (Ten Dollars), but (GASP!) three new maps, also in the Legendary category! Not more then a month ago, the Legendary pack Part Two was released on live, with the three new maps from ODST. WTF?

This is not good distribution. A PC gamer would never pay thirty dollars for nine new maps. Why? Because they've been designing their own maps since the original DOOM! What's been the point of the last 15+ years of console evolution if you stay in this endless cycle of payment for services rendered? Oh, but Halo 3 has Forge! Forge is shit! Why? Because you just spawn objects!

The only series of console games that I've ever encountered that truly let you make your own maps was the Timesplitters series on PS2 and original Xbox. This was a series that is miles ahead of Halo's Forge, because it let you design every facet of the map, from layout and textures, to enemy spawns, to enemy behavior, to challenges, to sequences. PC players can argue that it was crippled by the consoles that it ran on, but at least it was a step in the right direction. Letting Console users create their own maps, TRULY create their own maps, is something that I have never seen since on Consoles.

PC never has had this problem. Good Modding communities are everywhere on PC, and help keep old games like Tribes 2 alive far longer then they would on Consoles, because they can create new content for the games they love. It's only a matter of time before consoles become powerful enough to handle modding, but it'll be decades in the making if Companies like Microsoft, Infinity Ward, Epic Studios, and all these other developers realize that they can inflate their profit by milking money from consumers for content that they should have from the beginning.

At least try to understand why PC gamers are upset about IW releasing a game that's over 15 years behind the times.

OK so let's say that since we purchased the game and therefore you have the right to have access to everything on that disc on your own computer..

Shouldn't we then be able to file a law suit against IW for this? I mean if they do eventually charge us for DLC, I would label it as fraud since they are forcing you to pay for access to something you already paid for.

That's like buying a ticket to a movie, and then in the middle of it you are told you have to pay again if you would like to see the ending..
• Cod6 gamer
Okay this is my opinion on the entire situation.
For what they did, I am happy that it wont take them 6 months from release to finally add new maps. Would it have been any different if they finished early but kept the hidden stuff on an external hard-drive at their work.

However,
We did pay for the game and all of its content should be yours right?
I still cant believe that IW would do something like this.
Dont get me wrong i am still mad at them for it ,but is it really as big a deal as we are making it?
• kevin
Can this little hack get us banned from Steam, if so isnt a bit risky to do that. 10 dollars for DLC< 60 dollars for a new game.
• Thuedrengen
Hi.
Does this work for Mac computers as well?

• Zoomer
The reason us PC gamers complain about paid DLC is because we have never had to pay in the past. Why haven't we had to pay in the past? Because we used to create the DLC ourselves. There was no development time required by the devs. This is why we are angry. Although I must point out that it still isn't confirmed that we will have to pay for DLC.
• thehatchet
#1 reason why console users should pay for DLC;

My Graphics card costs more than your console....... not to mention the CPU, RAM, PSU, Case, Sound card, Cooling ETC ETC ETC.

All you do is turn on insert disc and play. Your stubby fingers cant comprehend the complexity of a keyboard and mouse so you n00b out on your "auto aim button"

I could go on all day... but I've probably lost you already.
• schmooblidon
lol nub.. yet my 360 can still play mw2 at 60fps.

of course id prefer a pc anyday, so dont rip the shit, i honestly just dont have the money, and yes i hate the 99% of xbox's population of 10 year old kids
• ZeRo_InSaNiTy
Completely agree. My GTX 285 costs more than a PS3 SO FUCKING HA CONSOLE FAGGOTS!! console gaming is for poor people. And don't you EVER justify saying its "cheaper" its not fucking cheaper its cheap because 2 reasons
1.your poor
2.the hardware is 4-5 years old(except wii which is 7)
• trojn
if we still had the console, then the hosts of the games would have complete control. (change the amount of exp earned per kill, unlimited ammo, no gravity)
• kneegra
we still do have the console, but most of the awesome commands are 'cheat protected' now, meaning they are locked. you can unlock them and change them but we still havent figured out a way to get other people to join a server that has its cheats enabled, they dont connect.

we can still change the exp per kill (insta lvl 70) and gamespeed and gravity, but no more infinite ammo, superjump, nofalldamage, etc.

Xbox can never beat a PC. Simply going by "who made xbox=microsoft, what made microsoft=PC, so who made xbox=PC, what makes all of your games=PC, who made most of your game types=DEV, what do DEVs use=PC". So all in all you are the ones geting raped here not us, on this subject we are trying to stand up for your rights as well as ours. We simlpy want the tools to make the game to fit our likeing, wich in terms will make YOUR game WAY better!

• Well... enough of this bastard fraud talk... if you guys really dont want 2 buy the game... but still want 2 own it. I suggest you go to this site, make a free account, and download the damn thing. that way you can do the same shit that I did... hack and mod the hell out of it... that way IW/Activision/ and Steam-VAC get pissed off so much they stop with the bullshit and just give out the Dev tools so we can make our own shit

I actually believe that there would be some type of consumer protection law about this. If you buy software, you purchase everything on the disk. Making content inaccessable if it's already on the disk is fraud, they're trying to get you to pay more for what you already own.
• iwNAZIS
i do see some major flaws in the nuclear war, i mean how would you win? you have some lvl 3 nub run into the game and throw a semtex into the nuke place and kill the whole enemy team, ranking himself up 15 times!
• Bob
It came as a 2 DvD. If you decided to add extra, useless, pointless stuff just to increase the file size.... actually, thinking about it, you wouldn't logically decide to do that. It would waste time, money, resources, and would in effect be completely pointless.
We whine about having to pay $60 for a game, and then, in all likelihood, have to pay another $15 for a few maps. Why do you think they have removed all modding capabilities (except for the console, but that has to be activated with a hack)? Espeacially when said maps or gametypes are finished and already on the disk(s) ready to be played, just not appearing in MP, except for the console. No offense to the console gamers meant, but you guys haven't had a taste of the free DLC. Game companies have always made you pay for extra content, often as a quick money grab.
List of stuff that has been screwed up in MW2:
1)No freaking console
2)No dedicated servers
3)No ability to kick: Hackers, cheaters, and those that generally cause a problem (those that are rascist to an extreme, sexist, etc)
4)SPEC-OPS! I have no problem with the ideas, in fact, I was looking forward to it. Where they epically failed was that you have to have steam, purchase a game, find a friend who has also purchased on steam, add them as a friend, and then, only then, can you play with a maximum of two people, including yourself. For a console gamer, this can be ok since most people have two controllers. However, look at WaW's co-op and zoms. Those two were the major hitters, along with MP (which wasn't as good as cod4, but's still enjoyable) because you could fight alongside 4 other people and just massacre the poor little AI. Good stress relief. Anyways, they don't even include a matchmaker, which I figured they would add so as to quickly jump into a spec-ops match.
5)The inability to mod. This has been fixed to some extent thanks to AgentGod however.

Anyways, I believe that, unlike what normaly happens, IW decided to start out with an XBox, go to PS3, and then as an afterthought added in PC. An example being http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=30901... look at posts #55 and #58. Normaly what happens is you start out with PC support, and work your way down as the PC is naturally moddable, and is capable of handling the most stuff (except for graphics, but there isn't much of a visual difference imo) such as 64 players in a single multiplayer map, dedicated servers, mods, etc etc. They then work their way down, removing things, such as the 64 players, shrinking it down to 18 or such so as to increase the speed of the XBox players.
For all those that wanted to try SP (maybe even MP, I haven't checked yet) but want to stay true to the boycott of not buying it, try DLing it from a torrent or such. Make a new steam account as a just in case, and go on your merry way of getting back at IW. Make a couple maps, make a couple mods, heck, even make a whole new campaign! 2 weeks out and there are already new maps thanks to this console. The only problem is that I don't have a clue about the commands lol. These are my opinions, and such.

For those having issues with starting it: I am unsure wether the new patch removes it's capabilities (I presume it does) but what you do is start up the application. Click on Auto-inject, and start up MW2. Once in-game, it should bring up the console by pressing tilde, which is the button with ` and ~ on it.
• Doogle
Normaly what happens is you start out with PC support, and work your way down as the PC is naturally moddable, and is capable of handling the most stuff (except for graphics, but there isn't much of a visual difference imo)
That's the way I prefer them to work too, start with a PC version then nerf that to work on the less capable machines, not the other way round.

Not sure what you mean about the graphics though, PC graphics capability far surpasses both Xbox 360 and PS3, especially seeing as they are both a couple of years old now while PC graphics cards are improving every other month or so, plus there isn't the memory limit with the PC versions either that exists with PS3/Xbox 360.

i really hope iw was teeched sooper goooder lol with the whole "i'm boycotting matchmaking online game play" bit, but guess what? you still purchased the game.. i really thought some were serious about this online petition. IW wins agian....

cheers to those that stood tall........
• Su!p4uR
they where obviously hidden for DLC.. facts

1) If they where going to be removed why are they still on disk?

2) How come when i first looked at the controls in the instruction booklet its says ` for console?

3) The game wouldn't be 12GB

4) There would be no need to access the hidden game types if they were not going to be in DLC because they would not be in the game... if they were meant to be removed IW would have removed them before releasing the game

5) IW are money grubbing bastards who don't give a shit about the pc user (any more)

Hey, it's EON8. The guy who figured this stuff out.
Upon further inspection, the VIP gametype actually cannot be accessed. The only proof that it exists is a GSC file with the gametype's code. Maybe someone else can use the code to implant the gametype.

On another note, I found another cancelled gametype called "Arena". It's basically Search & Destroy, but with no bombsites. You kill members of the other team like a game of TDM, but there are no respawns until the next round.
• gorified
Ok, so they put money in to the development. How many sales records did they break and how much money did they make the first week alone?? Yeah, you're right, they really DO need to charge for this so they don't run out of money and can make a profit. :P
• iragequitisgay
stop crying about it, get a job or go play cod4
• URidiots
Way to go hacking through the game and then makin accusations. For all you know they are just gametypes that will be added later (like hardcore headquarters in COD4) or things that aren't quite ready yet and being debugged to be unlocked later. The first thing you nerds to is complain. You aren't entitled to shit. Thats all you people do is whine about what you should get. Go out and earn something in life you fucking loser.

• JeremyK
Wow....how can you guys honestly be worked up over this? you are just begging for stuff to complain about. Who the hell cares if its in there already? Are you going to honestly tell me the game without the locked content isnt worth the full price?

The locked content is locked for a reason. They spent the resources to get a head start on it and will get those resources back by selling it. Why PC users complain about non-free dlc is beyond me. It promotes game companies to produce further content. I gladly pay for new maps.
• fail
because the pc users make their own DLC (or at least in all other games before this one) and map/mod makers who actually play the game make more and better maps/mods than IW lackeys who just steal ides from cod 4 mods(thats why most MW2 maps and "DLC gamemodes seem so eerily familiar to us, because we had them already in cod4) basically if you only play on consoles you cant possibly understand. And if you pay twice to play online (xboxlive) just keep loveing IW they do it all for your money.
• San Anger
IRAGEQUIT, I agree a lot of what happened with MW2 is bullshit. I agree Activision is taking advantage of the goodwill earned from COD4 to sell a console port. Also there is no justification for the $10 increase other than a cash grab. This is why I am not buying the game. But regarding DLC in general, for all games, as long as it isn’t something that should come standard in a $50 game, I don’t consider this an attempt to rip people off, even if it is hidden on the DVD. Yeah, maybe you can compare this to a car, where people can buy a base model, and pay for additional options, because it costs the manufacturer more to make those options. Car options shouldn’t be free. It costs a software developer money to develop a base game, and it also costs them more money to keep on making more optional content beyond what should be included in a $50 game. The analogy falls apart though because a car and its options are physical goods, where the producer only incurs a cost with each A/C unit manufactured. Software is intellectual property, where all the costs for the product and any options are all up front, and the cost of reproduction is basically negligible. So if a car manufacturer put in the optional A/C in every car, and just charged to have a secret switch turned on, that wouldn’t make any sense because it costs them money to put the A/C in the car even if someone doesn’t buy it. If someone just wanted the lower cost base model without A/C, the manufacturer would lose the money they paid for the A/C unit. If they charged extra for the disabled A/C unit in the base model anyway, and then charged even more for the option buyers, yes, I agree, that would be a rip-off. The hidden DLC on a DVD cost the developer money up front whether or not people buy it, but costs them nothing to hide it on the DVD. So it makes sense that they can charge $50 for a base model, and hide the options on the DVD for people that want to buy the options. It would be kind of like Microsoft Office basic costing $150 for Excel and Word, but hiding an unlockable Access database for a price of an extra $150 for people that later decide they need it. I just don’t see this being a rip-off. I wouldn’t think that people should still get Access for free just because it is hidden on the DVD. It still cost Microsoft a lot of money to develop Access, even though it was free for them to hide it on the DVD. Now back to MW2, I would consider it a rip-off if Activision later charged for access to dedicated servers, something that was and should be included in the ‘base model’ for $50.

Just a thought, but maybe they are three game types they tested, didn't really like and then cut from the final product...

• N0_R3M0RS3
I submitted this to Destructoid, Kotaku, Joystiq and Fidgit today. At least Destructoid picked up on it. If IW/Activision want to try and force paid DLC down PC users' throats, especially if it's already on the disc that comes with the retail game, then we'll have to give them one hell of a fight.

BTW, it would be a good idea to create a video of the game mode in action so that people can see and believe.

Xbox ports FTL!
• Frampis
Someone please post screenshots of the hidden maps or better yet, a video. The world needs to see proof that they exist.

"WOW… This Has Not Been Confirmed as DLC. Maybe the game modes are bugged and couldn’t be released. YOU DONT KNOW!"

So if this is just a minor quirk, an artifact the developers forgot to remove from the code, why exactly are all threads talking about this being purged from the IW forums?
• Joe
WOW... This Has Not Been Confirmed as DLC. Maybe the game modes are bugged and couldn't be released. YOU DONT KNOW!
• iRageQuit
San Anger-

Look at it this way:

Let's say you buy a car. Because the salesman is a pushy bastard and won't let you take a good look, and because you've had nothing but good experiences with the same dealership before, you decide to buy it, with all accessories except new ones which might be released in the future (MW2 costs 20% more than other games).

Once you check the car out, you notice that it has a working AC system, but that it has been disabled through a hidden switch somewhere. You go back to the dealership, and the salesman tells you that that is one of the "future accessories" and that for "only" 25% of the original purchase price, he'll flick the switch on so you can use the AC.

How is this not bullshit?
• San Anger
I am boycotting MW2 for the P2P match making, console port fiasco, but I'm not sure what I think about this hidden 'downloadable' content. I mean, it is a grey issue. I would be very angry if important features we taken out, just to be charged to have them back. On the other hand, let's say an average $50 (or ummm $60) game could be said to require a certain number of man-hours of coding and development. If the developers go well beyond that average man-hour number and add a lot of additional maps and game modes etc, then I'm not sure that it isn't justified to ask for more money from people that are willing to pay for it. So lets say a typical stock game includes the SP and 8 mp maps. So you are essentially paying say $20 for SP and $5 for each mp map. If you want more mp maps, I think it can be justified to ask people to pay for them. Paying for something gives an incentive for developers to invest time and money to make things you value. If people will not pay for something they value, then developers will no longer go to the effort to make them, and everybody loses. It's the way a free market works. And if it saves the customers bandwidth by including it on the DVD then I'm not sure that is a problem either. I am pissed though that the DLC is the reason why dedicated servers were eliminated from the PC sku. This DLC stuff should have been left on the consoles.
• fail
point is people are itching to make BETTER maps and even modify it into a DECENT game for FREE. But nooooooo IW smelled a chance to extract a few more dollars for their half assed shit.
• KingOfTehInternets
ZAK4994, That's the difference with MW2. DLC will be paid, DLC at WaW was free. So if it automatically came with WaW, it wasn't a big deal. We PC gamers would get it eventually anyway (for free). Now, IW thinks we're retard and tries to pull the same trick on us but then wants us to pay. Sadly, that little evil plan didn't work this time

Now I don't mean to go against other peoples' theories but didn't World at War have something similar happen? Except it just automatically came. No DLC downloaded. It just came with an announcement saying you should try the new game modes. It happened to me on the Wii so I might have something different going on here.

That's an obvious, fully functional, DLC.

Wow, IW went really low this time. This made me laugh, actually. They obviously locked this stuff because in 2 months they will charge you $10 so they can modify two variables in the game files to enable those modes.

Shame on you IW and Activision, shame on you.

@ Painmaker; Aaah I get it ;)
@ Iragequite: And ofcourse, with a link back to this page ;) Feel free to do so hehe ;)

If you want to be a dick, make an IW forums account and spam this all over the place in console sections.

All you 360 and PS3 players itching with excitement wondering what will be in the upcoming DLCs?

Well the Grinch is gonna come early this year, just to tell you whats in your gift boxes. And by gift boxes I mean you already own what's inside, it's just hidden in your house and Santa will show you where it is if you leave him some cookies and milk, and oh of course $15 as well.

This is why I love the PC gaming community. First one in when there's shitty code threatening the peace, last one out when there's an awesome game with mod support.
• Painmaker
I mean for when they decide to sell this shit as "new dlc".
• KingOfTehInternets
Thanks for the comments !

@Painmaker: Which patch ?
@ IrageQuit: Thanks for the addition, added to article !
• Painmaker
And the best part is... All you have to do is download a 2mb patch to activate it! IW nazis ftl.
• DocMock
Ever asked yourself why MW2 is 12 gig big? There you have it.

Figures well that their plan might have been to unlock these game types disguised as DLC viable to cost.

Fuck you, IW!

Addition:

If it isn't working, try this: after entering the command to change the gametype, enter the command /map_restart

Thanks to E0N8 from the IW forums for the whole thing.
