LOS ANGELES (AP)—Even when Lamar Odom(notes) was a kid with limitless imagination growing up on New York’s playground courts, he thinks he might have dismissed Thursday’s season finale as a bit too extravagant.

When the Los Angeles Lakers take on the Boston Celtics in Game 7 of the NBA finals, Odom realizes it’s a fantasy come true for any basketball player with the audacity to dream this big.

“It’s historic, especially when you talk about these teams and what they stand for, the pride,” the Lakers forward said Wednesday. “This is what you envision when you’re a kid in your backyard. Counting down, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…”

Another memorable chapter in the NBA’s best rivalry will end with a coronation at Staples Center, where the defending champion Lakers will try to earn their 16th banner while denying Boston its unprecedented 18th title in the clubs’ second finals meeting in three years.

For the fifth time in their 12 finals meetings, Boston and Los Angeles need all seven games to decide it. Each previous time it went to Game 7, the Celtics won—but when the current Lakers and Celtics take the court for the NBA finals’ first Game 7 since 2005 and just its second in the past 16 years, most will try awfully hard not to think about the history and pressure heaped on their shoulders.

It’s fine for kids and historians to savor this scenario, but Kobe Bryant(notes) knows it’s not a good idea for players to get caught up in it.

“It’s got nothing to do with me,” said Bryant, the series’ leading scorer with 29.5 points per game. “(When) I look back, years from now, or even when I was a kid, (if) you’d talk about being in this situation, I’d be really excited. But when I’m in the moment right now, I’ve got to play. I’ve got to focus on that. I can’t focus on the hype about it.”

Although Boston has the rivalry’s Game 7 history on its side, the Celtics have plenty stacked against them after an embarrassing 89-67 loss in Game 6 Tuesday night. Most glaringly, Boston won’t have starting center Kendrick Perkins(notes), who sprained multiple ligaments in his right knee in the first quarter.

The Celtics’ starting five has never lost a playoff series, but that five must change for Game 7. Although Perkins is a role player next to Boston’s Big Three and point guard Rajon Rondo(notes), the Celtics must hope veteran Rasheed Wallace(notes) and youngster Glen Davis(notes) can make up for Perkins’ inside defense and rebounding.

No visiting team has won an NBA championship in Game 7 since the Washington Bullets did it in 1978, yet the Celtics are a whole lot more worried about the Lakers than the Hollywood crowd.

“I just love the pressure,” said Paul Pierce(notes), who leads the Celtics with 18 points per game. “I love the fact that I get to play against the Los Angeles Lakers in a Game 7 on the road. I love the fact that if I don’t win multiple championships that I probably won’t be mentioned amongst the other guys in Celtic history that have done it before. That type of stuff motivates me. That’s what the challenge is for me, every time I put on this Celtic uniform.”

Pierce is usually the only player in this series who embraces its history, yet it’s too soon to say where these finals will fit in the rivalry’s annals. Although the games had been uniformly competitive before the Lakers’ blowout win in Game 6, they haven’t been spectacularly played, with gritty defense trumping offense in most of the major moments.

Ray Allen’s(notes) historic 3-point shooting barrage in Game 2, the Celtics’ gritty victories in games 4 and 5, the Lakers’ blowout win in Game 6—all will be dwarfed by what happens in the deciding game.

“I guess it’s going to be another decade that people look back and see the formation of this rivalry again,” Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. “The ’90s was missed, and the ’70s was missed, but the ’60s and the ’80s were big decades. It seems to skip a decade, doesn’t it?”

The Celtics have more experience in seventh games than the Lakers over the past three years, playing in two deciding games in 2008 and two more last year. Boston coach Doc Rivers thinks his club’s big-game toughness mostly grew from those high stakes.

“It’s the ultimate players’ game,” said Rivers, a New York guard when the Knicks lost Game 7 of the 1994 finals in Houston. “Unfortunately, I’ve coached in a lot of them over the last few years—or fortunately. All the things you’ve worked on all year, you have to do it, and execute it, and trust and play.”

Los Angeles is in just its second Game 7 of the past three seasons, but that’s because the Lakers have been better at avoiding trouble while winning 10 playoff series since Pau Gasol(notes) joined them in 2008. When faced with elimination Tuesday for the first time in these playoffs, the Lakers responded with determination at least partially born from fear, according to Gasol.

“I think about how bad and how much it would hurt if we don’t come out as winners,” Gasol said. “I keep that thought in my mind sometimes, just to understand that I have to do everything possible out there to help my team in any way I can. You want to leave everything you have out there, and compete as hard as you’ve ever competed.”

Los Angeles has won three more titles since Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal(notes) returned the club to NBA prominence by winning the 2000 championship, but the Lakers clinched all three of those crowns on the road. They haven’t celebrated at home since beating the Indiana Pacers a decade ago.

The Lakers weren’t discussing the prospect of a party on Figueroa Street during their light workout Wednesday, and the Celtics weren’t making plans for a raucous plane ride back to Boston. Given the weight of history and the intensity of this rivalry, both teams thought it best not to think beyond Thursday night.

“It’s all-out,” Boston’s Kevin Garnett(notes) said. “It’s for the marbles, it’s for everything, all-out. You save nothing. You leave nothing.”

This is a response to the guy down there about 4 or 5 posts complaining about the 20+ free throw attempts. Quit your @#$%ing and whining. You're obviously a Celtic sore loser with your revisionist history. The last time there was a 20 attempt differential in the free throws, in the finals, where the winning team got more than 20 attempts more than the losing team was... wait for it...

The 2008 NBA finals. Game 2

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_NBA_Finals

Celtics 27 for 38 from the line
Lakers 10 for 10 from the line
    differential +28
    final Celtics 108 Lakers 102

If you're going to whine and say the refs gave us this game and the series, well then they must have given the Celtics that game and probably that series too.

Obviously you're a hater if you are concealing facts to try to only point guilt at the Lakers.

OR your're just an ignorant moron who needs to get his facts straight.

To all the Whiners that complain about the Refs. There were Missed/Botched calls on both sides. SUCK IT UP. DRINK YOUR TEARS. There good for ya.

Well the Lakers had 19 Fouls, and Boston had 25. and in the 4th quarter Boston got in Foul trouble early. so once they were in the Penalty. Each foul they comitted resulted in Free Throws for LA. and then at the End of the Game Boston was fouling on purpose to stop the clock. which results in more free throws. So the 37-17 differential is not that bad under the circumstances. Fact is when Boston was up by 13 in the 3rd Quarter Doc Rivers should have rested his starters. Because he didn't, they were tired. and that resulted in Hacking LA when they were driving by. and led to them being too Tired to compete in the 4th. Thus giving away another 4th Quarter Lead that Phil Jackson had talked about in a previous game. Resulting in Lakers Champs again BACK TO BACK. and all your complaining doesn't matter. Lakers are Champs, they're having thier Parade today. and the win is already in the History books. Lakers Dynasty.

@Kevin in response to his post about Jackson creating Jordan into the player he was. Don't get me wrong by this, Phil Jackson is a superb coach, and is very smart. But, Phil Jackson did not create Jordan. The players all worked together to help create each other. The reason I say this is because Jackson and the Bulls did not win a title w/o Jordan. They were a unit and worked together as a unit. They knew where each other were going to be, and built a solid commorodity. If Phil Jackson did all that you say, then they would have been able to win at least one title w/o Jordan. Jordan did a lot for that team during those title runs. Phil is good, but he isn't the one who caused Jordan to be Jordan. Pippen was awesome, but Jackson couldn't mold him into a MJ. Players make themselves, coaches build the plays that work off their abilities. If he created Jordan he could turn Kobe into Jordan, Pau Gasol into Jordan, and so on and so forth. Do you have any memory of those days?! Jordan made plays that weren't even in the play book, and called plays on fly. That sort of intelligence can not be taught. If so, then he could teach it to anyone on the team. This is why so many critics call Jordan the greatest player in the game. Much like Peyton Manning, you can't teach his audible calling ability. You can show him the plays, but at the end of the day it's up to the player to be able to do what he does. Phil Jackson made Jordan, HA HA that's hilarious!! This is why Kobe can not be compared to Jordan. I am not a Lakers fan, but more of a fan of the game. I acknowledge Kobe's ability, and that he is one of the best players in the league right now. But his caliber is not at the same level as Jordan. He shows signs from time to time that he could be, but does not every game. Sure he is one title off of Jordan, but remember Jordan retired for 2 or 3 years. No comparison possible. Plus, Jordan never once whined about being on a team with Scottie Pippen who at times ran up down the court just as good as him, much like Kobe did with Shaq. The Lakers could have dominated the league had Kobe not thrown a fit about Shaq being there. So the comments on Kobe being better then Jordan need more thought then what they are giving. Sorry Kevin if you weren't one of the ones comparing the two. Kobe better the Jordan or even the same player as Jordan HA HA, that is the funniest thing I have EVER heard!!!

I didn't like the officiating in the game either. But, there were many mistaken calls on both sides.

I think a part of the reason why the Lakers had more trips to the charity stripe is because they were playing more physically near the end of the game. It seemed the Celtics were exhausted by the time the 4th quarter came around. They settled for 3-pointers instead of attacking the basket. The Lakers' physical play is also evidenced by the fact that they outrebounded the Celtics 53-40.

I also noticed that if the refs made a mistaken call on one team, they would sometimes attempt to compensate by calling a foul on another team. One instance which comes to mind is when Pau Gasol collided with Paul Pierce. Pierce was called for a blocking foul and Gasol went to the free throw line. In the subsequent play, Artest was called for a foul while guarding Paul Pierce even though there was minimal contact. Pierce then went to the line.

Lakers fans don't see the big deal with the Lakers getting 20 more Free Throw Attempts than the Celtics. Of course they don't.

For fans of the game of basketball, who appreciate the players deciding the game, and not the officials, it matters.

Over the last 20 years, there have only been two times where the Final game of the NBA Finals had the winning team shoot 20 or more Free Throws than the losing team.

In the 2002 Finals, Game 4 the Lakers shot 37 FTs, while the Nets shot 16.

And the only other time where this happened was on Thurday. Arguably, the one from 2002 might not have changed the series, as the Nets were down 0-3 before Game 4. But on Thursday, those Free Throws decided the game and the series. And the free throws were very one-sided, as the Lakers shot double what the Celtics did. 37-17. And Lakers won by four.

I am no Lakers or Celtics fan. I am a basketball fan. And when I see an injustice, I am not going to let some keyboard tough guys keep me from pointing it out. This situation of 20 more free throws for one team has only occurred one other time in the last 20 years, so obviously, this is not an everyday occurrence in the final game of the NBA Finals. The officiating was poor over the entire series, and the league doesn't do a thing about it. It is about time that they do.

I think Lakers will have a better chance signing players in their twilight years that haven't won a championship....there's Nash, T-Mac, Kidd and much more....they'll settle for mediocre salary just to have a championship ring before they retire....just like Clyde the glide (Houston) and Payton (Miami). Lakers are a much better insurance to getting that ring!

@ NightWing69 I do think there's a great chance of Lakers three-peating this year. But if Phil Jackson goes. I believe that's going to take away a lot. It's proven to me, that whatever team Phil Jackson coaches, he always seems to grow players into what they were destined to be. Example, Kobe Bryant was a childish player when he was younger, he always thought his way was right, and as he even admitted. Phil Jackson asked "Kobe are you coach-able". His quote was "No, I am not, I believe doing things my way is right".

Hey, at least he's honest haha.. but I believe, and will continue to believe. Phil Jackson grew Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen into great players, I mean what? Michael Jordan wasn't even the first draft pick. I believe he was the 3'rd over all pick. Correct me if I am wrong. I strongly believe that Phil Jackson's coaching methods, and his Zen is what makes him a great coach, always calm...

Kobe Bryant became a great leader thanks to Phil Jackson, and truth be told thanks to Phil Jackson. I think Kobe would be a great COACH one day.

Also, another thing I'd like to point out is. Look at Shannon Brown, look at how much he grew into the Laker team, as well with Odom, they weren't nearly as good as they were until they were coached by Phil Jackson.

Now if Phil Jackson does leave, which I heard Kobe Bryant begged him not to go, as well as Kobe telling Derrek Fisher "I signed my extended contract with you in mind".

They have a great chance if everything stays the same... they truly do. I still think they need to work on their toughness, that's the only thing they're truly missing, they need to hit the gym more. They also have to work on not being such a streaky shooting team. They're really streaky, some games they just can't buy a @#$% basket haha. Another thing is they must, and I mean must try to do more on getting Offensive rebounds, I don't ever see a Laker under that @#$% basket. They just have to drive the paint a lot more, and get more physical... only thing I think they're missing, they have a decent 3 point shooting team. mid-range shooting team. I have noticed that they are truly unstoppable. When they SHOW UP. I also do believe Derrek Fisher has to STOP FLOPPING haha, I don't see Gasol do it nearly as everyone says here though -_-

Yes, I did hear Doc Rivers gloating, thought it was ignorant. Maybe he'll think twice before doing that seeing he lost. Truth be told, Big Baby got a little bigger this year, he still has fat on him. But that day he was so angry, and just was so pumped up so much he started drooling... I think he needs to be checked for Steroid use.

Anyway, on to another topic. Doc Rivers saying Quote on Quote "We didn't really get the chance to protect our tittle this year with Perkins hurt". That was ignorant, seriously! Where was Bynum in 2008?! If that's the case, we never got a fair chance. But I don't take that as an excuse. Bynum was even hurt this year, but stepped up! I show a lot of respect to Bynum.

Yeah, saying the games were fixed by ref's is just really dumb. Because in game 5. I believe Celtic's got more of the better calls in that game. But the ref's were just plain horrible this year. No Favortism... if that's the case, I saw many times were Lakers got fouled and they didn't call it. What's the excuse there?

Phil Jackson usually wins 3 in a row... let's hope he does a great job and keeps his record there. Hope to god Phil Jackson stays as the coach. I think he's the best coach in ALL SPORTS.

His methods are unique. But they clearly have shown they work. and I still believe he builds the players into what they are. I don't think Michael Jordan would of been nearly as good without him. NOBODY thought Michael Jordan was going to be as good as he was (Even you know he still had no competition.)

Sorry. This web page is majorly screwing up on me....

@ NightWing69 Yup, do believe Lakers have a great great chance of three-peating it. But it's to early to tell, especially since great players contracts are up, who knows what might happen there... time will tell...

I do like what Magic Johnson said in his commentary. You know he loved the rivalry, since he was in one. Just like this. Actually two. One he won, other he lost. He hit the head on the nail. I find it really amusing in game 6 I believe... can't remember what game but him saying "I gave the torch to Lebron to early, Kobe Bryant is still the best closer, and Kobe Bryant is still the best player in the world". Got to admire what he says, since I think he could of became a even greater player... if he didn't screw so many women and get aids haha.

I do think Michael Jordan was way over hyped up, and I will say that until the day I DIE! Because there have been so many great players. Kobe Bryant is my favorite, and the NBA Logo is my 2nd favorite. then of course Magic Johnson. Those are my 3 favorite basketball players to ever play the game.@ NightWing69 Yup, do believe Lakers have a great great chance of three-peating it. CELTIC FANS ARE REALLY ACTING UGLY! The game is over, no looking back. Your team didn't fight the entire game. Paul Pierce was the only scorer you had and even he was shaking his head! He never stopped fighting, but Rondo wasn't the player he needed to be and Ray Allen tried but couldn't get his shots to drop. This game wasn't about the STARS on each team. The stars on BOTH teams had a sad shooting night, period. But, the bench players and some secondary players came threw for the Lakers where as that wasn't the case for the Celtics. Wallace did all he could have been asked to do, including knocking down 3's. But, what happened to that monster of a player you thought you had in Big Baby Davis? The silver screen proved to much for him. The Lakers fought because they had more to lose. NOT ON MY FLOOR, IN MY HOUSE, NOT AGAIN, PERIOD. And they played just like that! Sasash came in and dropped those free throws, not having even been in the game, that proves that they wanted it more. Bench players being called in to save the day. Role players not leaving the floor the entire game, and fighting throw the pain. Doc Rivers putting Nate Robinson in the game when it was due or die was a bad move! At that point you have to live or die with your starting squad! Rondo should have been out there fighting for his team. Don't hate because LA won, they deserved to win. They wanted it, and even when they were down they were never out! The Celtic ALWAYS CRACK UNDER PRESSURE, ESPECIALLY IN THE 4TH QUARTER. Why should the finals have been any different? Any way tune in and celebrate with the Lakers tomorrow morning at 11am. Watch the parade and look at a true champion!

I don't know why Kobe can't have his own fame! Yeah, MJ is the greatest player of this generation. Hands down! So, what! Kobe is a great player and when his career is over the numbers WON'T LIE, he will be GREAT! Will his numbers ever be like Mike's, they can't be because Mike over surpassed what ever number Kobe can post. And for that person who is comparing Mike and Kobe from high school to now, to crazy. Mike it the GREATEST, from the walk on in college to the comeback championships after retirement. But, you also have to remember that Kobe came from high school and wasn't a star until Magic left. Kobe came into his own under a Shaq dictatorship, and things could very well be different if he was ALLOWED TO DOMINATE EARLY IN HIS CAREER LIKE MIKE! Having said all of that leave Kobe alone. He is earning his own NAME & FAME. He DOESN'T NEED TO BE LIKE MIKE! HE'S PRETTY @#$% GOOD JUST THE WAY HE IS!

I am so tired of hearing people talk about the foul calls at the end of the game. Did you see the last 3 games? The calls weren't coming for the Lakers to start the game. That's how the Celtics earned their lead. The first 3 fouls went on the Lakers. You do remember Fisher sitting the bench in the first quarter? That was so Ray Allen could get off, too bad for his shot was no good! The game was like a Rugby match in the beginning, and even the commentators had to admit it. So, when the Lakers didn't let that stop them it's a set-up. PLEASE! Kobe is still the most dominate player in the league and shot @#$% didn't stop him from going to the whole, that's how you get to the free throw line! Let's be honest, this serious should have been over in Boston, with the Lakers winning. You CAN'T BELIEVE THAT BIG BABY DAVIS IT BETTER THAN GASOL, BYNUM, OF LAMAR! That was a set-up! The BEST TEAM WON, PERIOD! So, all you HATERS (KOBE, OR LAKERS) get over yourselves and tell the truth, they are the team to beat. Kobe is the best player in the league right now, and TRUE FANS should be able to admit that. No matter what team you route for. Oh, and please stop with all the foul call @#$% because Kobe had 5 fouls, so the whistles were blowing on the Lakers too! LA wins and the Boston cry babies have to go home and put some powder in their diapers and take a nap. SWEET DREAMS!

imagine if he didn't retire temporarily (returned to play for the bulls in the middle of his 2nd year of "retirement" a little rusty). That's 8 straight titles to match bill's 8 straight.

    no contest.
