The original score for Christopher Nolan’s Inception will be available on July 13th, just three days prior to the film’s release. Hans Zimmer has reunited with Nolan after their Oscar-snubbed collaboration (along with James Newton Howard) on The Dark Knight.
Zimmer’s budding relationship with Nolan has been a treat for moviegoers. When the two worked together on Batman Begins, Zimmer’s career was in no need of a boost. After The Dark Knight, the two proved a formidable team. Now, they can step away from the Caped Crusader and take on a new topic: the world of dreams.
Nolan’s main composer outside of the Batman world has always been David Julyan. Even after Batman Begins, the two worked together again on The Prestige. Nolan has shown an affinity for the soothing, yet suspenseful nature of Julyan’s scores. But it would seem, with the massive scale of Inception, choosing Hans Zimmer will be a good decision.
With Inception, the musical approach has been shrouded in the same secrecy as the film itself, but Zimmer has always been that way. He did open up briefly about the score, which also features Modest Mouse guitarist Johnny Marr.
“It’s a very electronic score. There is orchestra, but the electronics share an equal spotlight, and I also have Johnny Marr playing guitar. Besides Johnny and the orchestra, everything else stays virtual throughout the mix.”
It sounds like the score is quite original, but I hope he recreates some of the electronic style heard in his own work on Sherlock Holmes.
Now, many track titles on film scores give away plot details – just look at the soundtrack for Public Enemies. Many of you are still trying to stay in the dark about Inception, so the initial reaction will be to look away. I can say the following track list appears to have NO SPOILERS. Some are even lines straight from the trailers.
1. Half Remembered Dream
2. We Built Our Own World
3. Dream Is Collapsing
4. Radical Notion
5. Old Souls
6. 528491
7. Mombasa
8. One Simple Idea
9. Dream Within A Dream
10. Waiting For A Train
11. Paradox
12. Time
Head over to the Inception website to hear a sampling of what is rumored to be part of the score. It sounds like Zimmer’s style and would definitely fit the tone established by the trailers.
Almost every soundtrack Zimmer has released features one ridiculously long track in the range of 15-20 minutes. One can only hope he does the same here, but I am more interested in whether he and Nolan can rectify the Academy Awards sham from 2008. The film definitely has the Oscars in its sights, but we’ll know in one month if the two can deliver.
Inception has generated plenty of buzz and anticipation, mostly due to the enigmatic approach to marketing. But another major force is the music associated with all three trailers. While it was not the work of Hans Zimmer, the booming notes became instantly associated with the film. Alas, the Inception trailer music was the work of musicians Mike Zarin and Zack Hemsey. The last time trailer music embedded itself this deep in the hype of an unreleased film was likely back in 1979 with Alien.

This makes the soundtrack collector in me VERY happy.
I loved Zimmer’s work on the Sherlock Holmes score, as well as his work with James Newton Howard on both of Nolan’s Batman films.
Eagerly looking forward to this one … and also wondering when the orchestral score for Iron Man 2 will see the light of a CD.
“The last time trailer music embedded itself this deep in the hype of an unreleased film was likely back in 1979 with Alien.”
Actually, it was more recent with “Freedom Fighters” by Two Steps From Hell for Star Trek (2009). That particular song, and the way the trailer was put together, was top-notch.
But on to Zimmer. YES he was robbed in 2008. Unfortunately, I find most things I enjoy are snubbed by the ridiculous award shows. I was hoping that the Inception trailers were done by Zimmer, but apparently not. I have come to appreciate that music, but now it seems that it will be as hard to find as most other trailer music collections.
Have to agree here. Two Steps From Hell’s “Freedom Fighters” definitely stood out above the film score.
Prior to that, the most notable instance (to my mind) is “Summon the Worms” from Brian Tyler’s score to the TV mini-series “Children of Dune.” That track of music was used in the trailer for “Master & Commander” and become so associated with that film that the Academy Awards used it in place of the actual score to “Master & Commander” when the awards were televised.
You’ll get no argument from me about the music for the Star Trek (2009) trailer. I was just amazed by how well the music carried out the theme established in the trailer, and although Michael Giacchino did a very good job with the Star Trek score (it’s one of my most played soundtrack CD’s), I have to admit that after hearing “Freedom Fighters” by Two Steps From Hell in the trailer, my musical expectations might have been raised to a possibly unrealistic level.
And I also agree that Zimmer and JNH were robbed royally when they were snubbed for their work on The Dark Knight soundtrack. This is an amazing orchestral score and I was rather ticked when it didn’t get nominated.
@Mike Eisenberg… I also second your call for expanding the Best Original Score category to include 10 nominees, instead of 5, so awesome soundtracks like TDK don’t get bypassed next time.
Actually, you can have it for your collection, Zack Hemsey the composer for the music on the most recent trailer stated that the trailer music will be released at around the same time the movie is released. Here’s the link for the piece http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_H5EN7gG0I, read the description and it is coming straight from the composer it isn’t a fake page.
I couldn’t be happier about Zimmer and Nolan colaborating again.Zimmer is one if those rarest of artists who just dosent seem to make a wrong move.his well of inspiration just seems to be bottomless, making him seem infinitely prolific.Whatever he writes I get, even if the film is substandard.with John Williams in seemingly semi-retirement,I’m glad he has showed no signs of slowing down, especially with Goldsmith gone and Horner’s best days behind him.
I am ecstatic about this duo working together again. Nolan and Zimmer=sheer perfection. TDK was severely snubbed in 2008. A Dark Knight is one of the finest music cues I have ever heard. As you said, there is always a super long cue on Zimmer’s soundtracks, and they always turn out to be my favorites. I truly hope Zimmer comes up with something that the Academy can absolutely not resist. If only the Academy weren’t deaf, and awarded the correct composers with Oscars, all would be well. They had a great start this year with Giacchino winning…
To be fair, TDK was snubbed because of a technicality with too many composers or whatever. It’s bullshit if you ask me, but still a rule that’s been in place for a long time. The Oscars learned a lot from that year. Two lessons of which are never snub Hans Zimmer and make 10 nominees so TDK movies don’t get snubbed.
What makes the two of them so collaborative is the way they work, more specifically the way their mind work. They’re incredible on their own, but when they get together, the outcome is stunning.
Hans Zimmer is a one of a kind composer, his creativity revives the times of Beethoven; he composes music that is 100% original and incredibly enjoyable! An example is the Sherlock Holmes score, which was a turn in soundtrack history. Christopher Nolan is the same thing; his work is enjoyable in a way that no other’s work is (I stand by that sentence by the way, there is NOBODY like Christopher Nolan). When the two of them work together, the result is always nothing short than perfection.
