Florida provides high-risk youth between the ages of 14 to 23 an alternative
to a life of crime. The program provides opportunities for learning job skills
and building self-esteem. Community Neighbors Helping targets
minority senior citizen residents living in one of the poorest areas of the
city. Through weekly meetings with "grassroots helpers" and invited speakers,
elderly residents learn how to improve their health, receive health services,
and gain an opportunity to meet people outside their traditional environment.
This process brings attention to an at-risk population normally overlooked
by the community. Village Academy is a deregulated public
school built to address the needs of at-risk elementary students and families
living in low-income neighborhoods. Through a full partnership between the
school district and the community it serves, Village Academy provides parent
