Men and women have dreamed of flying for thousands of years. They watched birds fly and thought of the many possibilities. However, it took hundreds of years for humans to understand enough to make it possible for someone to fly through the air.

First, humans needed to understand more about the earth and air. Men and women invented and discovered ways of writing down what they saw. They measured, classified and sorted. This helped increase knowledge about flying. People learned how to control the powers they discovered. Men and women could then build the engines and wings needed to get off the ground to soar with the birds! The science of flight is called aeronautics.
