Run around the playground and feel the air pushing against your body. Run faster, the air pushes back harder. This is called drag. An airplane has drag when it flies through the air. Drag makes the plane go slower.

When you run, your legs have to move fast. Your legs and feet make you run forward. The engine in an airplane makes the plane go forward. This is called thrust.

Now, try jumping up. If you push hard with your legs you can jump high. Your legs are strong enough to lift you off the ground.

Watch a bird. When the bird moves its wings it flies. This is because the air goes around the wings in a special way. The bird can "lift" off the ground and into the air. An airplane has wings shaped like a bird. When air goes fast over the wings the airplane can "lift" into the air.
