EXCL: Saw 7 Producers Talk Actual Title, Traps, 3D

Fans of the Saw series were divided this week when Shock Till You Drop broke the news about a title change occurring to Saw VII, due for release on October 22. The sequel is significant in that it marks the return of Cary Elwes, picks up where part six left off (a chapter that appeared to tie up many loose strings) and is, of course, in 3D.

If you missed our previous report, we were informed the title of the new entry would be Saw 3D The Traps Come Alive. However, I got on the horn with producer Mark Burg and Oren Koules today to discuss the moniker change.

Burg clarifies, "The title of the movie is Saw 3D."

"The Traps Come Alive" is simply a tagline. Koules notes, "It's a tagline that was added in and misinterpreted. Most of our movies have taglines. One of the things we talked about during the campaign - especially with shooting in the 3D process, the traps really do come alive and we wanted that clear in the campaign. But the title of the film is Saw 3D."

Directed by Kevin Greutert, the producers say part seven was the right time to introduce 3D into the franchise. "We talked about doing six in 3D, but the technology wasn't there to meet our needs. We like to shoot these movies tight, fast and not long shots. Technology caught up to us and we took the movie and literally designed traps for the 3D." Koules says it would have been too cumbersome to call the film Saw VII 3D and wouldn't have the impact they wanted to make. "It was such a process in 3D, so much hard work was put in. Saw VII 3D is too much. This is like a new movie. There are, I think, eleven traps in this movie. To have that many traps, it's just a completely different experience for the hardcore fans."

"The only reason there is a tagline," adds Burg, "is we didn't want to confuse people and make them think we re-did the original Saw in 3D. This is brand-new 3D technology. We talked about shooting six and then converting it in 3D, but we didn't like the quality of it."

Expect an announcement from Lionsgate soon in regards to what fans will get at Comic-Con. "It's going to be different than what we've done before," says Koules. "We're going to be at Comic-Con but we're not in Comic-Con." The footage the duo intended to show at the event can't get approved for Comic-Con audiences, so they've got another scheme cooked up.

Ah, more mystery from the Saw team.

"Saw 3D is Saw on steroids," Burg promises. "It's that good. I don't want to over-hype it, but it takes Saw to the next level. Greutert is the most talented of the Saw directors we've worked with."

I was seriously shocked when I heard Saw 3D The Traps Come Alive. Although I'm sad it's not Saw VII, I see where they're going and I'm extraordinarily pleased that The Traps Come Alive is just a tagline and not part of the title.

With that said, I came.

THANK GOD! I'm a huge fan, and if they would have called it "The Traps Come Alive" as the title, I would not have payed to see the film. I do wish it was Saw VII or Saw VII 3D, but, oh well, I'll take what I can get.

glad its just the tagline but im still hopeing the dvd is in 2d. or if not atleast 2 discs with both versions. would still be happier if it just stuck to 2d. looking forward to seeing what happen to dr gordon after he got out of the bathroom. also wonder why he didnt keep his promise to get help since all the dead bodies were still in there for the 2 months or whatever between the first and second.

"it would have been too cumbersome to call the film Saw VII 3D"

So what are they going to call the next 'Saw' film, which will presumably also be filmed in 3D? 'Saw VIII 3D' is clearly "too cumbersome" and 'Saw 3D' has already been used as a title.

I love the Saw series and am so excited each October to continue the story. I'm always the first one at the theater the day the movie airs. However, I'm disappointed that Saw would go 3D. High def is bad enough for me. I suffer from vertigo and have a hard time watching certain movies because of it. I think it was Saw IV that was filmed with a lot of camera movement (zoom in tight then zoom back out quickly and very shakey). I got physically ill and ended up "watching" about three quarters of the movie with my eyes closed. My hopes are that Shock Till You Drop would offer both 3D and 2D versions of the movie.

There is no next Saw movie. Saw 3D will be the final movie as there will only be seven of them. So they don't have to wory about the next title.

Hey guys, listen. Idk if anyone else has thought of this. but maybe they go it wrong. they might have misunderstood what the executives said.
maybe the tagline is The Traps Come Alive
or maybe it's just a hoax.
I refuse to believe that the guys at SAW are changing the name to that rubbish. I don't care much for the name, for its the film that interests me. But if they change it, they will obviously be beaten by Paranormal Activity this october

but like i said, it might be a mistake.
probably the TAGLINE is "The Traps Come Alive"
******

Posted by: andre on July 9, 2010 at 18:16:20

I would like to say, I never doubted the guys at Saw for a second. I even accepted the idea that the name might be valid. I am glad that "I" personally realized among some of the more smarter fans out there which I'm sure suspected what I suspected from the beginning as well.
I am not showing off, if I am I apologize. I just feel very happy that I was one of few people on this website that actually stated the idea that "The Traps Come Alive" was just the tagline and that it must be a misunderstanding or a hoax...

lol, I bet the popularity level for Saw VII (3D) this week went up quite a bit because everyone (excluding myself) freaked out about the alleged confirmation of a title change.
haha! gullible people we must be!

Posted by: andre on July 9, 2010 at 18:22:40

by the way, "STYD" should try varifying the information they post before posting.
Anyone with a brain should have known there was something odd about the supposed title change.
Not to mention the fact that "confirmed" was the first word on the previous post. It basically says, "he BS we're telling you isn't BS at all, honest"

and now, no one wants to say, "we were wrong sorry."

Posted by: djblack1313 on July 9, 2010 at 18:53:05

there's no reason for ANYONE to apologize, either way, that "tag line" is one of the worst, most pathetic "tag lines" ever. it just scream of The Sound Of Music...."the hills are alive with the sound of music...."----"the traps are alive with the sound of music...."

I love the saw movies. But will the opening credits to the film say saw 3d? because that will be kinda lame. Although the movie is called saw 3d, I hope the credits in the movie say saw 7 with a cool 3d look.

Andre: Shock wasn't the only site to confirm that SAW 3D THE TRAPS COME ALIVE was the official title. Other websites (B-D for example) also confirmed it. The internet went berserk with negative reactions and Lionsgate/Twisted back-peddled and (quickly) decided to change it.

It's blatantly obvious.

Posted by: andre on July 9, 2010 at 19:20:47

Dorito Breath
I know other sites have posted the same. and i went to them and posted my comment on them too. Maybe its a bit much, but some of the other sites have not yet corrected the "mistake", so i took the liberty of trying to get the word out that Saw 3D is the real title and the tagline is "the traps come alive"

i was being sarcastic anywayand. however, they didn't back-peddle anything. It was clear that the tagline was "traps come alive"
well, this is just what I believe. i personally don't think they ever intended on calling it Saw 3D The Traps Come Alive

the tagline may not be great, but atleast Saw 3D is a more decent name

as for the name, I read on another site and interesting theory.

"D" is the 4th letter. so 3 + 4 = 7.
that's probably why they called it Saw 3D instead of Saw VII..
its a clever idea. not the best idea, but still clever.

I love it and can't wait to see it. What could be better then blood and guts coming right at you!

Andre, we have nothing to apologize for. I did my job. I heard about the title yesterday, called the studio. Our studio rep said, yes, that is indeed the title.

On our end, our job was covered and done.

Today, I got a call from the studio offering me a chance to talk to the fellas and this is what they wanted to clarify. Miscommunication from Lionsgate yesterday? Perhaps.

It's a case of "don't shoot the messenger," man.

it was sarcasm
I was not serious in anyway

I'd like to apologize for my sarcasm. i was simply joking. As I already figured, it was a misunderstanding.
Obviously no one has to apologize. people make mistakes.

It's very early so I haven't read any previous comments, so apologies if I've repeated what anyone has said. Personally, I think it would have been a good idea if the producers hadn't let on that it was 3D. It would've been ace if they just used the tagline without including 3D in the title.
