“Now, more than ever, it is critical for our collective voices to be heard in Washington.  Born and raised in Alpena, I have devoted my entire career to collaborating with and effectively advocating for the people of northern Michigan at both the state and local level.  I look forward to working in partnership with ALL citizens of the 1st Congressional District to shape and strengthen the future of northern Michigan.  I believe together we are stronger.”

  • Gillard Seeks Stupak Seat

    From Iron Mountain Daily News:

ALPENA - Alpena native and former Democratic State Rep. Matt Gillard, has announced his candidacy for the 1st Congressional District to replace U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Menominee, who is retiring.

"Michigan faces many difficult challenges," said Gillard, who served as the 106th Michigan House District representative from 20022008 until he left office due to state term limits. The 106th District includes Alpena, Alcona, Crawford, Montmorency, Oscoda and Presque Isle counties, all of which are encompassed in Stupak's current congressional district which also covers the entire Upper Peninsula, most of northern lower Michigan, and as far south as Bay County in mid-Michigan.

"To overcome these challenges, we are going to need more strong leaders in Washington, D.C., like Senator Carl Levin, who will work diligently to ensure good-paying jobs and affordable health care for our citizens, quality education for our children, and protection of our natural resources," Gillard said. "That is why I want to be northern Michigan's voice in the U.S. House of Representatives."
