NSBSD Hires New Superintendent
For Immediate Release, June 18, 2009
Arnold Brower, President of the North Slope Borough School District Board of Education announced today that the Board has hired Peggy Cowan as the new Superintendent. “Ms Cowan brings a wealth of experience to the students of the Slope, coupled with a deep commitment to and passion for education. She is a former Superintendent of the Year in Alaska, holds a Master’s Degree in Education and her superintendent’s certificate. More that that, she really won the Board’s confidence in the extensive interview process, displaying a great sense of humor and a firm understanding of native cultures and rural issues.”
One of Ms. Cowan’s strengths matches a key need of the District directly, as she has served as Director of Curriculum and Assessment prior to her superintendency in the Juneau School District.
“It is an honor and privilege to serve the students of the North Slope, and I am excited to get to work with the great team of educators the Board has assembled. I am dedicated to the success of all students, and that dedication to equity will govern my every decision. The superintendent needs to be the instructional leader in the District, and I will do so through Alaska’s cultural standards. I believe in high standards, but not in standardization. My approach is simple – high expectations and strong relationships” said Superintendent Cowan.
Superintendent Cowan’s resume includes ten years in Juneau, demonstrating her long-term commitment. She also served as an adjunct member of faculty of the University of Alaska for sixteen years, paralleling the 15 years she spent with the Alaska Department of Education. She is known as being very bright and hard working, and works closely with students, staff, the Board and the community.
The Board of Education asks all residents of the North Slope to join them in welcoming Ms. Peggy Cowan to the District!
