The lone lady candidate in Northern Michigan politics has halted her efforts to win the seat of retiring Menominee Democratic Congressman Bart Stupak.

Linda Goldthorpe, a Republican lawyer from Curtis, has reportedly ended her active campaigning for the 1st Congressional primary to be held Aug. 3.

Former Goldthorpe campaign manager Tom Backers told the News-Review in an e-mail the announcement was recently made to staffers and other campaigns.

Multiple calls to Goldthorpe campaign for interviews went unanswered in the past two weeks.

Backers said because Goldthorpe's name will remain on the ballot, she has asked that campaign be "suspended" rather than completely leaving the race.

Backers has since moved on to support self-proclaimed GOP Tea Party candidate Tom Stillings from Torch Lake Township.

An Inside Michigan Politics/Practical Political Consulting electronic phone poll to 140 voters in the district showed Goldthorpe to have less than 2 percent of the vote, while Sen. Jason Allen, R-Alanson, and Dr. Dan Benishek, R-Chrystal Falls, were neck-and-neck with about 20 percent each. Patrick Donlon of St. Ignace, five-time 1st Congressional candidate Don Hooper of Iron Mountain and Stillings also network below 2 percent of the poll.

Goldthorpe and Connie Saltonstall, a Pro-Choice Democrat from Charlevoix, were the only women candidates in Northern Michigan for state or federal seats.

Saltonstall ended her bid in May, after citing a lack of support from her own party leaders.

One of the last campaign messages posted two months ago on the Goldthorpe Campaign page at Twitter.com reads: "Saltonstall quit! How is it ok for the party (parties) elite to pick the candidates?"
