I didn't always get the auto show -- even though I live here. I used to think it was sad. In the dead of winter, freezing cold, our "social event of the season" was to dress up and walk around a bunch of polished cars?
Cars are getting smarter. These days, some of them can ask you what song you want to hear and let you talk to friends with no hands on a phone. But that is just the beginning. A look at the technology displayed at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas shows that in-car technology is expected to advance tremendously this decade. Soon we'll be looking to our smart phones for information about our cars, and twitter, texts and e-mail will be at our fingertips.
It's time to get back to the cars. After the sense of impending doom that shrouded the 2009 North American International Auto Show, the 2010 edition of America's best auto show is ready to get in gear with hot vehicles, outstanding values and the latest technology this side of "Avatar."
The future has yet to be written, but vehicles and technologies unveiled at the Detroit auto show are prologue to the story lines that could dominate.
I know I'm not the only one. I feel like I've just woken from a nightmare. One in which the villains have finally been slain after a long battle, the cheerful music is just beginning to play again ... and life can finally return to normal. In the case of this year's Detroit auto show, that would be the cars.
In the past, the Detroit auto show was all about theater. Pulsating music, fog machines and sexy models. Some of that remains, but at this year's show, automakers are getting real. Ford, for example, isn't showing a single way-out concept car, only production models.
Fuel-economy leaders and prestigious models fill the Detroit Three's stands at the auto show. Ford's new models range from a 30-m.p.g. update on the Mustang to the technically advanced Focus. GM reveals vehicles developed to strengthen its Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC brands.
The winds of change blow among the ranks of overseas-based automakers in 2010. Audi and Hyundai continue their assault on established leaders like Mercedes and Toyota, which respond with models meant to build on their historic strengths.
In dealerships: late 2010 The sleek and contemporary A8 luxury sedan takes Audi's credentials for style and technology to a new level.
In dealerships: this spring With a chassis engineered for European roads and a Buick badge, the Regal could add some zing to Buick's image and compete with luxury sport sedans like the Acura TSX and Volvo S60. The Regal is about 5.8 inches shorter than the Buick LaCrosse.
The elegant XTS Platinum concept car's exterior design and size preview the look of Cadillac's upcoming large luxury sedan, which will replace the DTS and STS models.
In dealerships: this fall Already a hit in Europe, Asia and Australia, Chevrolet's first global compact car will offer a turbocharged engine to combine enjoyable performance with up to 40 m.p.g. on the highway when it rolls out of GM's assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio, this year.
IN DEALERSHIPS: ARRIVING THIS YEAR THROUGH 2014 Powerful and efficient new engines and transmissions make news for Chrysler, with an assist from a couple of Fiat vehicles and new model names and tweaks for the automaker's existing lineup.
In dealerships: this summer Boasting highway fuel economy of 40 m.p.g., European handling and Ford's global design theme, the Fiesta aims to be Ford's first no-excuses subcompact.
In dealerships: early 2011 One of the world's best-selling and most eagerly awaited new cars, the Focus showcases Ford's new global design theme and offers features unheard of in other compact cars. The stunning Focus wagon and sedan will be built around the world, including at Ford's plant in Wayne.
In dealerships: this spring Two powerful and fuel-efficient new engines ratchet up the fun and affordability of Ford's legendary pony car. An all-new 412-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 should get at least 25 m.p.g. in EPA highway fuel economy tests, while a 3.7-liter direct-injection V6 offers 305 horsepower and 30 m.p.g. on the highway.
Little but luxurious, GMC's Granite concept hints at how the brand may try to translate the professional-grade appeal of its trucks to smaller and more vehicles.
In dealerships: this summer Honda's little CR-Z hybrid revives the distinctive profile of the dearly departed CRX that injected fun and style into Honda's Civic compact line in the 1980s.
In dealerships: this month With swooping lines that were penned to compete with upscale European sedans and excellent fuel economy, the 2011 Hyundai Sonata promises to make a big splash among midsize sedans.
In dealerships: March 27 Mercedes sticks with the classic fabric soft top for its new midsize convertible, avoiding the extra weight luxury competitors like BMW, Lexus and Infiniti picked up when they switched to retractable hardtops.
In dealerships: this summer Sporting a price around $270,000 and a clear lineage from the legendary gull-wing 1954 SL 300, Mercedes' SLS AMG is a once-in-a-lifetime car.
Mini's open-air Beachcomber concept borrows the running gear of the brand's upcoming Mini Countryman SUV and throws in the alfresco appeal of the old-time Mini Moke that became a staple of vintage TV programs from "The Prisoner" to "The Monkees."
