Discuss

AllAboutJazz.com, the web's leading jazz music website, has partnered with JAZZRADIO.com, the web's top jazz radio website, to bring you jazz radio at All About Jazz. Listeners can now choose from two dozen expertly programmed channels while perusing content at AAJ. Tune in from work or home and hear classic jazz, avant-garde and mostly everything in between--there's something here for everyone. A brief Q&A; with JAZZRADIO.com founder and producer Ari Shohat

How many channels do you offer?

AS: We currently offer 24 unique jazz channels at JAZZRADIO.com and AllAboutJazz.com. We do introduce new channels from time to time, though we're already close to covering most of the popular sub-genres.

How do you program your channels?

AS: When it comes to music programming, our motto is quality over quantity. Our channel directors carefully pick what they feel is the cream of the crop out of anything that comes their way. There's a lot of music out there. We pick only the top few percent of what we think is exceptional, and that's what we play. We want to create a good experience of non-stop listening, rather than some sort of an encyclopedia that includes everything.

On average, how many tracks are included with each channel?

AS: The breadth of the programming varies from channel to channel. Some channels may go on for 15-25 hours until you could start to hear some repeats, yet others may go on for as long as a couple of days. It really depends on how much great stuff we can get and we're constantly trying to add more music to each channel.

Do the channels always start with the same track or are they presented randomly?

AS: Everybody hears the same thing when they tune in. So it can be mid-track when you start, and will be pretty random. It's not like Pandora, but more like true radio.

Musicians and labels will want to have their music featured on the different channels. How do they submit their music to JAZZRADIO.com?

AS: They can submit their music to http://www.jazzradio.com/submit. Please keep in mind, as previously stated, that we only accept 1-3% of everything we come across. It doesn't mean the rest is not good, we are just very particular about what we program in each channel.
